The United States is larger now than
all Europe in point of area. It has
3,600,000 squaro miles one fourteenth
of tbo land surface of the entire globe.
In '1800 wo had just 825,000 square
miles.
The suicide rato in Germany is in
creasing. Gerraanyhad 11,013 suicides
In 1897, and the rato for Prussia alono
is twenty in the 100,000 inhabitants.
This seems strange, as the German has
tho imputation of being of a stolid dis
position, not easily excited and of firm
nerve.
We have more peoplo now than any
European nation except Russia, which
alone leads us. Wo have as inauy peo
plo as live in all Great Britain and
France combined. We have one-half
more people than Germany. Wo have,
practically 73,000,000 peoplo in tho
United States, and 10,000,000 more in
our new possessions.
possible that legislation can bo made to
lit all cases. Having discovered tho
vein, then, it seems just that the miner
should be entitled to follow'it out of his
grounds. At a great depth may be the
wealth he has discovered, and in tho
caso o: vertical lines conllning his
rights to that wealth, would belong to
his fortunate neighbor who may have
taken his claim up simply on speculation.
