BISBEE, ARIZ., AUGUST 18, 1900. THE APPROACHING ELECTION. As -the time more nearly ap proaches for the general elections, interest and speculation increase regarding the personnel of thetick- 'bid that the party conventions in the territory and county will ask the voters to support. All sorts of sto- ries are passed around and there was perhaps never a time when it wasless easy to foretell the actions of the various conventions in which the . voters of Cochise county will bo in terested. ' Since Mr. R. A. F. Penrose, J r., ' of Pearce, flatly refused to be the Republican nominee for delegate to congress the leaders in that par ty are" at sea regarding the men to whom the compliment shall be given. Less interest seems to be shown in this question than in that ' as to who shall succeed our pres- .ent governor in the event of Presi- ' dent McKinley's reelection. 1 Judging from the action of the ,,.last territorial convention the can didate for delegate will not be a man who stands very close to the present territorial administration. ' Mr. J. V. Vickers, of Tombstone, is frequently mentioned, as are two or three men from the north- .. ernt part of the territory. Col. M. ,. H. McCord, ex-govemor of Ari zona, may be nominatedaand would be a strong candidate. The Dem ocrats must decide between the ' present delegate, Hon. J. F. "Wil- son, and the ex-delegate, Hon. Marcus A. Smith. While the Democrats of Cochise have only good things to say of Wilson, they naturally prefer their genial and talented old neighbor "Mark." The delegates to the Democratic Territorial convention will be quite ' evenly divided between these two candidates, and the aviso ones say it is: up to Maricopa comity to de cide between them. There is al- ' ways the possibility of an Arizona Democratic convention being stam peded to Frank Cox, who can go to congress whenever he will consent to be the candidate. In our county there are more -. known aspirants for office among Democrats than among their oppo nents. The republicans say they have at least a sure winner for the office of Assessor in Mr. C. A Overlook, of Bisbee. Many of thatpolitical faith speak ', of Mr.Dayton F.Graham, one of the Bisbee constables, as their prob- Rhl nominee for ahentl. though . some favor (tho nomination of Mr. O. L. Cummings, of Tombstone. Probate Judge W. F. Bradley, will probably be a candidate for reelec tion, and the Republican nominee ' for'District Attorney will be one of the well knownTombstone lawyers, ,' Bowman or Swain. The Democrats . will -without question nominato Mr M. D. Scribner, of Tombstone, for Treasurer. Mr. Scribner held that ' office in '93 and '94 and inaugurat ed such a perfect system of con- ducting the affairs of that office . that it has been followed without change by both his successors. There are at least three Candida te3 for the Democratic nomination for Sheriff Mr. M. O. Benton, pres ent 'chairman of the board et super- visora; Mr. A. V. Lewis, one of Bisbee's constables, and Lieutenant Georee B. Wilcox, of the Bouch Riders, who was his party's candi date for the Territorial council two yoMMUC0. There are three cantu dates for the District Attorney nomination Mr. E. AY. Land, the present incumbent, Col. Benj. Mor- .'hii, of Tombstone, and Mr. O. Gibson, of Willrox. For Probuto Judge the only Democratic aspir ant so far mentioned is Mr. 0. W. Bostwick, the popular post account ant at Fori. Huachuoa. The many friends of Mr. Frank Hare say that lie should bo renominated for County Recorder. Mr. M. J.Brown, who filled that office in 'fl(J and 'AS, is also a candidate. The ticket makers in each party will do well to remember that fully ono third of our citizens do not profess to be loyal party men but vote independently. Cochise is now a first-clas county and should bo officered by first-class men. Notice to Creditors.
