THE OFFICE : Of SHERIFF.
,. - ., . ,,
The oinceot siieritt ot tne county
probably of more importance
is
than any other local official posi -
! Son in the gift of the people. The
"-'office of sheriff is one that carries
f -h. 'l xi- ii '. iu:i:i.:
Wlia. 11 WiO gitm wi xwpuubiumtns,.
The.pffice inoludes the care of the
-safety ottho people. It seeks tose-
. p i
oure an immunity from crime, and
outracefor peaceful and law abiding
oitizens. The sheriff must be a
man of strength of character, of
. great courage, and coolness in the
hour of danger.
There are several such men in
this district and one of them must
be' sheriff of the county.
The absolute withdrawal of John
Slaughter from official life, takes
outof the arena one of the great
examples of what an Arizona sheri
iff, with all that the term inoludes,
Bhould be.
, 'John Slaughter has held the.
,, office ,of .sheriff for two terms, tind
vise noted as a man of undaunted
courage and cool daring. His cap
ture of the Nogales train robbers
will be remembered. The, camp of
, the bandits was discovered, near
- the-top, of. the Whetstone moun
' tains. - Mr. Slaughter removed his
boots and crepi on the men. Bert
JAlv'ord.and a Mexican, were with
him. One robber was killed and
one wounded before the deputies
,, firad.a.shot.
x We-Bimply mention this to illus
trate'one side,' and the dark side
' too, of a sheriff's life where he
., seeks .to rid' the district of the mal
efactor. Mr. Slaughter will forgive this
'vfreedom"we take with his name.
-His intention is absolutely fixed as
faras official aspiration is con
,t cerned, and very probably Mrs.
--. Slaughter -objects to Beeing her
husband again in a position that
carries with it so 'much danger to a

Again-, an administrative capac-

quires a man who can stand at
the.head of that,office and direct
its numerous branches. In addi
tion it includes politic qualities,
for its dealings are with all sorts
and conditioni."of ' men, and one's

All this must be coped with and
put down. The idea oE reviving
'the 'Banger" system again is ab-
-surd. Oar good staunch oitizenss
are enough, Tho officers must be
directed by a reliable sheriff.

remarkable of these creatures is the
duck-mole, a nativo of Australia, a
curious combination of bird, reptile

are conce'rned with reproduction ,are
strikingly birdllke. -It' is,- .however,
clasied with warm-blooded quadru

the body is covered with hair, and it
has the habits and general structure
of a four-footed animal. This Platy

ter holes in the less settled parts of
Australia, where it feeds upon insects,
and forms its home in burrows, under
