The Deceased Was an Old Em ployee of the Company. Harry Holland a minor in tho em ploy ot.tho Copper Queen Company, was burled yesterday at 1:30 I'. M. His death occurred at tho company's hospital on Wednosday evoning at 7:2o, being caused by an accident which be fel him on the night of Monday last at tho Holbrook mine. An inquest was held by Justico S. K. Williams, ex ofllco coroner. A synopsis of tho evl denco adduced at tho inquest follows and explains tho cause of tho accident. Patrick Spillane testified that he was working with Holland at the time of tho accident to him; that they had in seven holes; that after firing Harry said, "One of those holes didn't go; I'm going back to light it again." That he (Spillane) protested strong against his doing so: "No," Holland said, "I will go back and fix it." Hoard the hole go oil' just after hq went back and know he was caught. Then went and found Holland lying about six feet from tho holo. He was conscious and said, "I walked into it." Harry Cam eron gave tho alarm and help came. Holland was carried to the station and then taken up tho shaft. Harry Cam eron testified that he was working with Holland and Spillane, that Holland went back to see about a missed holo. Didn't think it was more than a ininuto or two from tho time the six holes went off bofore tho seventh did so. Holland must have hurried on his way back. Tho rule is not to go back for a miss before twenty minutes. The Coroners jury was composed of: T. D. Davis, L. J. Overlook, Henry Manz, Lester White, C. H. Goshen and C. P. Powell, who found as follows: The jury find "That ho came to his death from the effect of wounds re ceived on tho 15th day of January,1901, in the mine of the Copper Queen Con solidated Mining Company, by carless ly, thoughtlessly and neglectfully re turning too soon to blasts of powder which ho had prepared and set off, be fore they exploded, which exploded while he was oxaminingthem." Holland has been here at various times for ten or twelve years and was liked and rospooted by his associates. His ago is given as 54 years, and a native of tho United States. From Dr. F. A. Sweet, surgeon in chief to tho Copper Queen Company, we liavo learned that tho injuries to Mr. Holland were: A frightful wound in tho ileshy par.t of the right thigh, from which a piece of rock as largo as a man's fist was extracted, having made a wound a foot in length; tho right hand was almost destroyed, and the loft eyo totally so; tho right eyo dam aged to tho oxtont of entire loss of sight. Tho upper lip split open and a wound in the forehead from which a piece of rock the size of a cream nut was taken. He leaves a wife and two children at Rivorvleet, Michigan, and a grown son in Detroit. The Road gverseership. The following correspondence ex plains itself: Bisbee, Ariz., Jan. 12, 1901. Edward W. I should like to know if I hold office un til my successor is appointed, which will probably not be within 90 days. Mombera of Court Bisbeo are earnestly requested to bo present. By order of H. C. Stillman, C. R. Ah Chung was on Wednesday order ed deported bv U. S. Commissioner S. K. Williams, having been found to bo in this county illegally. Mounted In spector Hitchcock arrested Chung on tho San Pedro river and learned that ho had crossed over from Sonora sur ro ptitiously U. S. Commissioner S. K. Williams had bofore him on Thursday four Chinamen arrestod at Naco by 'inspec tor Hitchcock, charged with being un lawfully in tho United States. After examination they were all ordered do ported. Tho services of the Presbyterian church will be held in Library Hall at 11 o'clock and 7:45 on Sunday, llov. Win. P. Chalfunt, who has recently roturnod from China, after fif teen year's residence in that country, will preach at both services. Mr. Chalfunt will speak on China and his experience in that interesting land. NACO HAPPENINGS Weekly Epitome of Events in Our Thriving Border Town. Locals and Personals, Etc. (From our Regular Correspondent) Date Graham of Bisbeo was in Naco last Saturday morning. Mrs. Scott White came in from Tombitono Saturday evening and re turned to her homo Sunday morning. It is understood that Mrs. Whito will mako Naco hero future home, as it is Mr. White's intention to build here. F. C. Fenner came up Saturday from Santa Margarita, Sonora, where ho has been looking after his mining in terests. Hon. B. A. Packard passed through here Monday on his wav to Ranchito, Sonora. George Clark and Earnest Carter went down on Tuft's stage Monday morning to Santa Margarita. They expect to be gone several days. Sam C. Robertson arrived Monday evening from Galveston, Texas. Mr. Robertson is one of the storm refugees and has many thrilling tales to tell of his experience through tho storm. He will locate in Naco and has accepted a position with Ben Goldman. Miss Lene McFarland from Bis beo came down Tuesday evening to see the border town. George Mitchell of Bisbee went through Naco Tuesday to Sonora, Mex ico. Robinson & Toohey have now start ed forwarding goods from this point to their camps down in Sonora. Sever al cars were manifested last week and Mr. K. C. Hicks is now busy manifest ing several more. The Mexican cus tom house brokers are kept very busy passing goods across tho lino. F. M. Abrams has started to lay a foundation for a two story abobe, which will be annexed to his hotel. The an nex will contain 1G large rooms. The hotel accomodations here are now tax ed to its utmost capacity and at times it is impossible to get sleeping quarters What Naco needs most is more rooms for the accomodation of the people that are coming hero every day. It is understood that Mr. Abrams will build another house in the rear of his hotel and also a large dining room. This will relieve matters yory much, but not enough for this fast growing town. Wm. Leggitt, Jr. left Tuesday morn ing for El Paso, Texas, to take in the Carnival. Prospectors are going through hero every day for Sonora, Mexico. Sever al parties from Bisbee passed through Tuesday. We would not be surprised I to hear of some rich mineral discovery very soon. T. J. Lamberson camo up the early part of tho week from San Miguel. .Wr. Lamberson has large mining interests in the vicinity of San Miguel and came up to see if he could not interest some one in bonding some of his claims. The pump at the water works broke Sunday and for three clays Naco went dry (?) Ben Goldman left Wednesday morn ing for El Paso to attend the Carnival at that place. Mr. Goldman expects to be gone a week. Tho livery business between Naco and Bisbeo is very brisk. Ev-ry 'Sun day a crowd of Nacoites go up to Bis bee and parties wanting to goto Bisbee have to engage their teams two or three days in advance and it is very fceldom that a team can be had after Saturday night. P. E. Kline from Dawson City, Alas ka, pasted through here the early part of tno week for the Lananea. Ho re turned tho latter part of the week and registered at the Naco hotel. T. H. Schuster and W. P. P. Field of Tucson were here this week repre senting tho Mutual Life Insurance Co. They were also here in the interest of the races that are to take place in Tuc son next month. These gentlemen claim that the races to be run next month will be the best tho people of tho territory ever saw and they expect a large attendance. Three Mutual Life Insurance men were in Jtown this week and did a good business. Messrs. R. H. W eir and Walter Stodghill of Hanson, Ky., and Miss Helen Clawson and Harry Brown of Bisbee drove down Sunday evening from Bisbee. Wm. H. Gowdy, of Colorado Springs, was here tho early part of the week looking for a buyer for his claims in the San Jose mountains. Senor Manuel Carrillo, Collector of Customs at Naco, Sonora, returned a few days ago from tho City of Mexico witli his family. Harry White came were from Bisbee Tuesday and went over to the Cananea where ho will work as bookkeeper for the Cananea people. Mrs. P. E. Murry has registered at tho Naco hotel from Nogales. Mrs. Murry is here looking after the Lind say mining interests at tho Cananea. It is undoitood that sho will open up tho mines at Cananea at a very early date and when opened up it will bo ono of the largest mining concerns in the State of Sonora. P. J. McCormick and R. F. Smith, railroad contractors from Los Angeles returned Sunday from the Cananeus where thoy had gone to look ovor tho proposed new road that is soon to bo built from tho Cananeas to Naco. Clias. Brown registered this week at the Naco Hotel from Tombstone. Martin Sheehy of Albuquerque, N. M., is stopping at tho Naco Hotel. Dr. C. L. Caven and wifo camo over from Bisbee the early part of the week. It is learned that tho doctor came ovor to examine applicants for life idsurance which has beeruquito numerous since the insurance agents have been here. A. C. Hays anu ueorge ji ins came in from Lem oro, Cal., Wednesday and spent sev eral days. ladeo 1 ruretagoyena, of Hermosillo, who has valuable mining interests in the Cananeas came in this week and went over to that famous mining dis trict. C B. Lewis, President of the Nation al Metal company of New York; H. W. Nichols, representative from the City of Mexico, and A. L. Lewis, of Nogales. representing the same concern, were in Naco the greater part of the week. It is reported that these gentlemen woro here for the purpose of looking over the ground for a site to build a largo office in Naco. Sonora. They ex pect to open up soon in Sonora and buy all grades of copper matte, ores etc., from the different mines in Sonera. Mr. Lewis made a trip totho Cananea property before leaving" here. Naco is fast coming to tho front and from the outlook now her future is very bright. W. E. Brodrick and P. M. Webb of Bisbee registered at the Naco Hotel Wednesday. R. Ekey of Nogales came in this week and stopped at the Naco hotel. B. T. Powell registered Thursday at the Naco Hotel from Tucson. Sheriff Del Lewis came in from Tombstone Thursday evening. The A.. & S. E. R. R. are putting in a large track scale in their yards, which will facilitate matters greatly in ship ping car loads from this point, as here tofore cars had to be weighed at Ben son which was a great inconvenience to the shippers here. Freight is coining in so fast at this place that the yards cannot hold all the cars. On Monday at Naco Ex-Sheriff Scott White arrestod Cornelius Pesquera, who has been much sought after by the Sheriff's office for several months. Pesquera is tho man who killed two or three Mexicans in the Dragoons sev eral months ago and made his escape into Sonora. He is a partner of tho noted outlaw Augu9tin Chacon, who escaped jail at Solomonville three days before he was to bo hung. Pesquera appeared at Naco on Monday. He was recognized by Scott White and placed under arrest. Deputy Sheriff Huds peth landed him in tho Tombstone jail on Wednesday. The S. F. Examiner publishes an estimate of tho number of persons now suffering from the grippe in the United States and places tho numbor at one million. Bisbee, while its quota was not perhaps included in the estimate made by the Examiner is doubtless contributing its full share. Among the the latest sufferers we learn of C. A. Ovorlock, B. F. Norton and Sid Harris. The title to the townsite .location of Overlook is expected to be perfected during the coming week and lots will then be put on sale. There are numer ous applications for lots filed with the promoters of the enterprise. Mr. White, of the firm of Walsh & Whito of Naco, was a Bisbee visitor on Friday. These gentlemen advertise a grand opening of their business tonight. Subscribers to stock in the Bisbee Improvement company can get their stock certificates upon applying to M. J. He is a mining ex pert of established reputation and con nected with capitalists holding large interests in mining properties. The Dally Prospector bid 15 cects for publishing the board proceedings. The Tombstone Epitaph bid to do the same work for 9 cents. Tho Prospec tor bid 40 cents an inch for othor ad vertising. Tho Epitaph's bid was 20 cents. Can the average reader figure which was the lowest bid? The law says the contract must be awarded to a weekly paper provided it is the lowest bidder.
