4 -- is THE HERALD. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY ST. J"OIEElN"S, .A..T. The Xormons Alarmed. Reports from Salt Late City show that the recent severe course .of justice in Utah has produced lit tle less than a panic among the disciDles ofBrisham Young. If reports are to be credited the hie rarchy is on the verge of the great est crisis in its history. The saints had hoped to meet with some rec ognition of their long faithfulness to the Democratic party on its coming into power, but instead they are compelled to expect a con tinuation of the uncompromising enforcement of justice which they have recently experienced. Revo lutions, it is said, never go back ward. The country has become so fully; determined that the laws shall be respected, that the Demo cratic administration could not, if it wouldT protect the Mormons in their continued nulification of them. They know that their only hope lies in such a corruption of party leaders and officers as shall cripple the law and render its eng forcement impossible. The mor mon leaders would be glad to be rid of the Republican officers who have executed the laws under the Edmunds bill, but they have reas ons to fear that polygamy will not go unpunished under their success ors. Having denounced mormon ism so uncmopromisingly in his in augural address, Mr. Cleveland cannot put the Federal patronage in the hands of those who would be influenced hy mormon bribes. In fact, it is intimated that few re movals or new appointments will be made in Utah. Certainly the best way for President Cleveland to tes-! tify to the honesty of his profes sions will be to continue in office the ofiicials who have proved their fidelity and efficiency in adminis tering the laws against polygamy. Portland Oregonian. r 0 The Case of Arnold. .Monday arery manly Mormon was before the Third District Court. Mr. Orson P. Arnold was arraigned on an indictment charging him with unlawful cohabitation. He prompt ly pleaded "guilty." Being ques tioned by the court, he frankly stated that he proposed hereafter to live strictly within its laws ; that he proposed to support'his second wife and her family, but no longer to live with them, and that henceforth he proposed to use his moral influ ence on the side of the laws. He was rightly let off with a slight fine. His bearing was that of a sincere and true man who, after serious thought had reached a conclusion, and had determined henceforth to live ui Compared with the conduct of the heads of the church, the bearing of Mr. Arnold was such that everyone, who saw him felt that the promotions heretofore in the holy church had been hy favor rather than upon merit. Salt Lake Tribune. Has "Caught On." "Say, boss, what is the meanin' ov bein' a Mormon?" inquired a lazy looking coon of an intelligent State Department clerk, as the couple mot a few days ago. "A Mormon? Why, a Mormon is a resident of Utah and averages from two to eighteen wives." "Well, boss, what fo' 3011 white folks got so down on de Mormons and want to mak'em close der bus iness?" "Because it is highly immoral, this thfng of plurality of wives." "I dunno nuffin 'bout plurality, but I jess wish I could be a Mormon right down here in Washington. I'se only got one wife and she makes a libbin fo5 me a takin5 in washin' and goddlemit, if I could be 'lowed by de law io hab twenty I needn't do nuffin' but drink gin an' ride in de street cars all de rest of my born days." Washington .Hatchet. Dillon Bros., of Normal, 111., re cently sold a five year old Norman - stallion for $5,500, which is said to be the highest price ever obtained in the United States for a stallion of This excellent breed.
