One of the most determined prize prize fights that was ever fought on this coaBt took place at Alviso, Santa Clara county, between Billy Hamilton of San Jose and young Mitchell of this city, both light weights. The first meeting between the combatants was on Sunday at San Rafael where the sheriff, however, appeared on the scene and stopped the proceedings before the men got into the ring. To-day, however, their rendezvous at Alviso remained secret and the fight went on without interruption. After twenty-three hard fought rounds in which both sustained severe punish ment the fight was awarded to Mit chell on a foul. The match was with hard gloves for $250 a side. Anti-Chinese Club. Santa Cruz, Dec. 3. An anti-Coolie club was formed at Felton last night with between thirty and forty mem bers. Mark of Respect. Washington, Dec. 3. In accord ance with the President's order all general government buildings were cloied to-day as a mark of respect to the memory of the late vice-president. The publio schools and many busi ness houses were also closed and at noon there was a general tolling of b;lls. It was like Sunday. At the White House a few callers put in an appearance but were informed that tho house was closed. The official part of the house was entirely deserted a n.l the President and Col. Lamont spent the day in a private part of the mansion. Every public building is most profusely and appropriately draped in mourning and all flags are at half mast.
