to Fort Bowie with Captain
Lawton and Command.
The Wllloy OJu Chieftain Refuses to
Surrender to Capt. Lawton, but
wants lilm as an Escort
to P ort Bowlo.
General Miles Refuses to go to tho
San Bernardino Ranch, and
Makes Gcronimo Come
.to Him.
From Mr. John Slaughter who
arrived in this city this morning from
the San Bernardino ranch a reporter
of The Tombstone gleaned the fol
lowing in regard to the movements
and actions of that red handed mur
derer Gcronimo and his band.
Mr. Slaughter states that Geronimo
has been waiting at San Bernardino
for several days in order to meet
General Miles whom he says is the
only man he will surrender to but up
on receiving word from Miles that he
would not como to San Bernardino to
meet Gcronimo and that if he wanted
to talk to him he must come to Bowie
After securing litis information, Gcr
onimo concluded to go to Bowie, and
is now en route there in company
with Captain Lawton although he and
his band are not disarmed, as they
have not yet surrendered.
Following Gcronimo in a complete
half circle of over 1,000 United
Stales troops which will make escape
impossible. Gen. Miles has not reced
ed from his original propo.-i.iou and
s.'ys that he will offer no terms except
unconditional surrender.
Gcroniino'o outfit consists in all of
himself and -11 bucks and squaws all
told who are all well mounted' and in
oxcellent condition.
Gcronimo and band and Captain
Lawlon and command are expected
to arrive at Fort Bowie about 10
"o'clock to-morrow morning.
As there does not secin to be a pos
sibility of Gcronimo's escape and (ten.
Miles will make' no- conditions with
him the Indian war is virtually ovei
and Geronimonnd his buck maypi.j
sibly.be turned over to the civil au
t loritics .lo answer to the charge of
murder arid-rapine, it is hoped so at
least, and as almost everybody who
has mot Gen. Milc-ff shares in this be
lief there is reason to believe that it
sq.
ntes.
Mr. Slaughter says that when Capt.
Lawlori and' his command arrived
-that they ltioked-4ike a party of
tramps, Capt.' Lawton had the rim of
his hat left and an undcr.'.rurt and a
pair of overhals on, hia foot being en
cased in raw hide.. The Captain
taid to Mr. Slaughter "I don't, look
like an army officer now do 1"
John Slaughter gave Lawton twelve
horses to. replace twelve of Lawton's
men who,were disabled.
Hurrah for Gen. Miles!
The Indian war is now virtually
settled.
When Gcronimo and his band reach
Bowie on the rcsesrvation fhey w 1!
not find any Indian scouts to furnish
them with ammunition .as their cous
ins tisters and aunts will have been
removed to Florida to . rest in the
swamps. Miles is a dandy. The In
diana must go to him.
The many friends of Mrs. B. A.
