A Pioneer Party's Enconnter With the Indians. The Perils of a Search for Gold and Wealth in Northern California ia Early Days. Written for The Sunday Call. f»,HE ship Mechanics' Own, GOO tons ■r> burden. Captain Matterton master, ,_f* sailed from New York August 15, 184.», bound for California, with a company of 100 men, organized for mining and trad ing iv the laud of gold. Among these were Thomas Gihon and a chum named Iloyt. The ship arrived in Sun Francisco harbor January 2, IS3O, and the company separ ated, some going to the mines aud others engaging iv the several occupations which at that time commanded the high wsges of from £12 to §20 per day in Sau Francisco. Giiion was an engraver, and found go d employment in- his art. Iloyt also remained in the busy city. Both, however continued their association with the company. Enrly in tho spring of ISSO attention was directed to the far north ern coast, now comprising the counties of Humboldt and Del Xorte and the western portion of Trinity. The larger number went to prospect for gold diggings, but some were in search of large tracts of laud in the interest of parties iv Sau Francisco. Iv there expeditions embarked Judge Tobin, now of the Hibernia Hank, aad one of the Police Commissioners, Frank .Le mon, one of the California Volunteers who came with Colonel Jonathan U. Stevenson in 1847. Smyth Clark, a well-known pioneer of '43, Major Snyles, Dr. Gros, Dr. Clapp, ulso early pioneers of the gold-hunting pe liod. lv another expedition Gihou aud llnvt, Thomas Young, a banker, and a com rade of his named Kdlogg, were among the number. They left San Francisco iv the bark Hector, Captain Camp, for Trinidad Bay. On landing at Trinidad some of the party started for the interior country and camped cv a high hill, where they found another parly of fourteen meu lioiii Australia, who had come from San Frau ciaco iv the ship Laura Virginia, Captain Otiinger, to hunt for gold mines. I'LIXDEKED BY THE INDIANS. During the night the Indians robbed both camps of their weapons and mining outfits and In the morning all resolved to reluru to Trinidad mid make their way to the mouth of the Klamath River. The Australians had becu well provided with rifles and hatchets, and among them were some known *» Bushmen. Giiion had besides his shori-barreied ya^er a hatchet, Kellogg a navy Coil's revolvei aud Iloyt an Allen pep per-box pistol. These they had kept close at their sides as they slept and thereby suc ceeded iv saving them from the thTeving Indians. At Triuidad they found the Laura Virginia still ai anchor and made the ar rangement with her captain to; be taken to the mouth of the Khuuath. They found there also a Frenchman who had lor sale a lot of common swords and several of them bought these at exorbitant prices. They were, however, better than no weapons. In two days the ship arrived at tue Kiam ath, where the distinctive parties sepa ra.ed, each to pursue their own chosen course. Outside the bar were many In dians in canoes catching seals and salmon; iubide was hii Indian village. All the lu liiuns showed signs of becoming trouble some. Gihou, Iloyt and Kellogg resolved to keep together, aud two other passengers by the Laura Virginia, Khreuberg aud Ar thur, buth armed with rules and an ax, joined them for common and mutual pro tection. ANOTHER INDIAN DEPREDATION. The experience iv the night camp back of Trinidad, a few uisruts before, had taught them to be wary of Indiitms aud they camped for the night more cautiously. Not withstanding this, the indiHiis managed to steal a riiie and an ax. Arthur shot at one of the tleeiug Indians, but missed him. The next day the party- moved on to lied wood Creek, twenty-tire miles from the Klamalh, where they met Frank Lemon, Judge S.iyles aud .Smyth Clark, who were taking up claims. A band of thirty Indi an gathered near them, manifestly with no friendly intentions. The- party camped that night near the creek and careful vigil was maintained until morning. The Indians were armed with only bows and arrows and hud a wholesome fear of the lirearms of the whites. In the morning Lemon and his two comrades, joined by Arthur, Kellogg and Ehrenberf,', started off to take up claims. Giiion and lloyt concluded to return to the Klauiath. Arrived at the river they en gaged two Indians to take them across in a canoe. lloyt sat in the bow and Gihon in the stern. A short distance out in the stream they obM-rvoil the Indians on the shore making significant signals to the two in the canoe aud immediately they becan wobbling the frail craft, evidently to upset it and throw them in the river. At once Gihon Kilned his yager at the Indian in front of him and ordered a return to the shore, Iloyt leveled his pepper-box at the other Indian, and between the two fires, us it were, the Indians ceased their movements for an upset, and paddled to the shore as directed. Holding their weapons ready for instant use, Gihon and Iloyt stepped ashore and kept the Indians at a safe dis tance. The bucks ordered the squaws buck from the shore and began to draw near the two men, with their bows aud arrows iv a threatening manner. There were in all ten bucks opposing Gihon and lioyt, who stood them on with their firearms, the hatchet and sword, as they made tlmir way to a bluff a mile distant, where they discov ered the tents of a camping party of whites. A BATTLE 'WITH THE RBD6. In his emotion .IJuyt touched ttie trigger of bis pepper-box aud most lortuuatcly the tiilline revolver made an effective shot. One of the Indians fill dead. Instantly all tlie bucks but two turned and ran at the top of their speed. Tlie two who stood ad vanced, lioyt, in his nervous fright, dropped his nislul, and quicker than Gi hon could work tlie detective trigger oue of the bucks grubbed and wrenched the yager from liim and snatched the hatcliet from his uelt. lioyt stooped nud recovered his pistol and nKiiin it did effective service. The Indian frouting Gihou made a blow with tlie hatchet as Gihon drew his sword. At the same instant came, the blow aud the desperate thrust which pushed the blade deep into the groin of tin: Indian, liv: tlie hnlchet was crashed iuto Gituiu's skull, on the left side, high up on his forehead, lu ilictlng a stunning ana a painful wound. In an instant, while the weipou was raised for another blow, Iloyt leaped and grasped It from tue ludiau's hand, but neglected to strike the savige with it. Uiliou's (all and the BiKht of -the blood rushing from his ugly wound tor the moment disconcerted him. Ilis first care was his prostrate com rade. The Indian, unarmed and power less, endeavored to pull the sword from his body. A STRANGE SPECTACLE. As Gilion rose from tlie gruuud quite bliuded by the blood whicli was streaming down his (ace, weak and not wholly con scious, the strniige spectacle met his gaze of the ludiuu endeavoring to withdraw thr sword. The hilt had come off in the at tempt and was held in one hand while the stoical buck was usiug the other in his at tempt, working it up uud dnwn, as uncon cerned, apparently, as tnough his body was insensible to uaiu or feeliug, like so much wood. The extraordinary scene helped to restore him to clearer consciousness. Singular good fortune broiißlit speedy re lief and safety from further attack by other ludians in the neighborhood. The whito men camping on the high bin:: had wit nessed the encounter and with all possible haste hud rushed to the scene. They ar rived in good time to rescue Gihon and Hoyt. The Indian last shot by the latter was not killed but badly wounded. lie had recovered sulUciently to go to the aid of his brave companions in the deadly fray. With a heavy rock in iiis hand he was drag ging his way to the spot where lloyt was endeavoring to stanch the How of blood trum the Head of Gihou, who was sitting upon the ground from sheer weakness. Tneir backs were to him. In a few minutes more he would be close enough to hurl the rock. The advancing party of rescue at once took in the situation. TWO MOKE SHOT. Two well-aimed shots made the prover bial "good Indians" of the pair, and the crack of the rifles was the signal of deliwr ance to Gihou and Hoyt, who had not un til the moment observed the approach of their deliverers. They were taken to the camp on the blurt. Among the party there was a Dr. Robinson, a skilled surgeon. He examined and dressed Gi hou's wound. The skull was cut through, but the brain was uninjured. In a few weeks the wound was healed, leaving a deep scar which Mr. GihoD, now in the sixties, will cirry all his lifetime as an ineradicable testimony ami a vivid re membrance of his first year in California, and of his rough experience in the Iltiru boldt and Klamath country, of his perils among the hostile Indians of that fegiun. lie had got enough of that kind of adven ture and departed on the first vessel from Trinidad, after he was.nblo to make the trip to San Francisco. He took employ ment with Adams & Co., the famous pioneer express company of California and Jew lork, as messenger between tho two cities, by the Pacific Mail Steamship Com pany s steamers and the Panama route, and in that employ lie continued for years, a trusted, faithful and thoroughly honest servant iv guarding millions of treasure, and in the essential, quick dispatch of busi ness committed to his charge. Ho has since made his homo in San Fran cisco and followed his profession a» an engraver, in the enjoyment of a good home, hnppy domestic relations and ample custom. Laree of stature, com pact of form, wiry of fiber and sound in health ripe age deals gently with him, and his nature is as warm aud as true as iv his youth, with the indomitable pluck of the period of his pioneer expeditions for gold aud manly adventure. In his case aud that of his pioneering friend the Indians were not aggravated to hostilities and attacks upon the whites by any act of the early Cal ifornians to provoke their savßge nnture, ns it is the habit of ill-informed philanthro pists to allege iv all such cases ugainst the people of this farthest west. James O'Mkaba. THE FLOUIt MAUICET. Still Inactive and Prices Easier, With a Downward Tendency. A&BXTBAPOLIB, April s.— The flour output was slightly improved last wick, the aver ago daily manufacture being 22,900 barrels. The aggregate production was 107,-150 bar re's, against 1?.",720 barrels the week be fore and '.Ki,s7u barrels for the correspond ing time iv 1880. The mills have so far not suffered any special inconvenience from the coopers' strike. Most of the firms have ac ceeded to the demands of the men, and for a while at least will pay 3!> cents for bar rels instead of 32 and 33 cents, as for some time past. The inactivity of the flour market is as pronounced as ever. There is very little demand except for small lots for prompt sliiument and the curreut output is reduced, as it exceeds the current sales, l'rices are rather easier and have a downward ten dency. The lea«e of the present operators of the C. C. Washburn Mill Company is continuous, and, unless the firm is notified, to the contrary by July Ist, will remain in force for another year. The Pillsbury-Washburn Company de sires to lease this property, nnd is iv com petition with the present lessees for its future control. The Directors prefer to sell rather thau lease, but havu refused to dis pose oi the plant on a basis of 20 per cent cash. THE WOOL. MARKET. A Fair Demand fir Good Warp Territories California Dull. The Collector sent him to the United Slates District Attorney as the case has been before the United States Commis sioner. A Li.-lr. Wool Clip. Mai:v-vii.i.i:, April s.— Tlie spring wool clip in this district is expected to be light and exceptionally poor in quality. 3So spring wool has yet reached the market here and the demand is not likely to be great. The outlook for grain is improving somewhat as the season advauces. Some exceptionally large yields on summer fallow are indicated by the present couditiou of the crops, but as thu acreage sown is com paratively (mall the total output will be much below the average. An opinion has been filed by City and County Attorney Flournoy declaring Amity alley, between Chestnut street and Mont gomery avenue, an open public street. It was dedicated to the public use on Auuust 28, 1850, by B. F. Edwards, the then owner, aud was accepted by the city. There is a petitiuu before the Supervisors to have this alley opened. A limit in Sirret Work. The defense in the suit of the Pacific I'aviug Company against Kogers & Bolton, has raised the point that the notice for im proving a street was signed by a Deputy Superintendent of Streets, an officer which, it is contended, is unrecognized.
