C! - It has already been demonstrated that the youth of Alameda, fired . so suddenly with the military spirit, cannot hope to enter the N. G. C. except on ouo or at most two con ditions, lt seems strange that these condi tions should have been so completely ig nored by the leading spirit of the young men with the military fever, for he is I a commissioned officer of the Second Brigade, N. G. C, who before receiving that com mission, it is presumed, passed an examina tion as to his knowledge, among other sub jects, of the rules and regulations govern ing the N. G. C. and the provisions of the Code of California relative to it. An Oak land paper has taken the cue from Tub CALL, and has the following to say regard ing the new company: - It has teen said frequently by those win knew that a military company was being organized m Alameda, that It would be attached to the Fifth Infantry Kegiment. and the military wider of an i venlng paper falls into the trap neatly laid hv a lew practical jokers, and tells all abou It. Kor the information of the military men who have been misled by the report it Is ouiy uecessary to say that there are no such prospects. Iv ths first place, the ten new companies authorized to be formed by the last Legislature have alt been organized and attached to the National linn,). and no new companies may be attached without the sanction ol llitu body. Cadet computet nay be formed and attached to regiments, but not unless all the members are scholars at one par ticular school or academy, and nobody can j-uu them unless ihey belong to that school, Hence, Hi- only way Alameda can have a military com pany other Hum by these methods is to orgasm independently and aim and equip themselves at their own expense. The two Oakland companies ol the Fifth have none too many men over the minimum, and It would be agood idea to recruit up before talking of forming another conipauv. Besides, rumor lias It tlitil a certain company of the Finn Regiment is liable to He disbanded in the near future unless au improvement is made. Not being members of any school the sec ond alternative which might be presented relates of course to the possible disbanding of the San Kafael company, which for sumo time has been slowly going to pieces. But who has had the authority to give out, even if true, the promise that a certain company might likely be disbanded sootier or later to make a berth for Alameda's mil itary young men? Oakland lias three com panies, and all dangerously close to the minimum figure. San Francisco has more than three. As well announce that they also will be disbanded. The item quoted last week and rending, "The division stall' was inspected and mus tered by Division Inspector Staples last Wednesday. Only .Lieutenant - Colonels' Hecht and Depue and Sergeant-Major Self ridge were present," is correct enough, so far it goes, only the terminal word "preseut" should have been "absent." lint little things like that do not bother soma who pretend to give military news. The First Artillery Regiment from Sac ramento, which went into camp at Santa Cruz, "Tripe Hill," on Saturday last, was credited in some of the dispatches with an attendance of 600 men. .Now its maximum rank and file could only be about tils. As a matter of fact its enrolled membership on paper was 313 in May, and aboui 275 went into camp on the first night. First Lieutenant William H. Fraser of Company H has been relieved from further duty on the non-Commissioned Officers' Examining 'Board of the First, and First Lieutenant James A. Margo of Company V and Second Lieutenant B. C. Sutlilfe of G have been detailed as members of the board. Regimental orders of the First announce the discharge, on account of "removal," of First Sergeant E. A. Selfridge Jr. ofthe cadets. There's an impression abroad that Selfridge was appointed an orderly to the Major-General, whose headquarters are in San Francisco. How about thai? "The boy in the office" at regimental headquarters of the First, and a very in telligent youth at that, desires it distinctly understood that a higher authority than he is responsible in orders for the appoint ment of the " Ordinance Officer.". On Monday evening next coinr .vies A and F of the. Filth Infantry, stationed at Oakland, will be drilled with the baud and staff, by Colonel Fairbanks. Guard mount and dress parade will demand their atten tion. X---' ■7: E. L. Cutting, who was lately in com mand of the cadets of the First, has been elected a member of G of the Nationals. Corporal James H. Mahan has been pro moted Sergeant, and Private Harry Harper Corporal of Company G of the First. By Wednesday next tlie advance guards will be leaving for "Tripe Hill" for the Second Brigade Encampment. Private Sanford S. Prosser of Company B has been appointed Hospital Sto ward of the First. ■■ MIXED UP THE BABIES. Two Mothers Are Unable to Distinguish Their I'riijeuy. "That's my baby "It's not, it's mine!" "No, it isn't; this Is yours I" And so the conversation ran for several minutes, Mrs. Patrick Collins and Mrs. John Hous ton, who both live at 135 Delancey street, found their babies missing when they re turned from market, and, after a search filled with thrilling incidents, found the two babies in the. bed of a young man who drives an ice-cart, and who rents a Sl 50-a --week room from Mrs. Collins. Both babies were perfectly nude, and botb women claimed the same child. Both were born on the 28tb of May last, both were boys, both had brown eyes, and each weighed 11% pounds. Each mother was jealous of the other, and each claimed that her child was llie best looking. The little incident caused uo end of talk in the house, and both Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Houston received congratulations and tea-sings galore, which they took in perfect good nature until tho last bit of pleasantry, which proved too flinch for tliem. Yesterday morning Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Houston left the cherubs sleeping and started out to do the day's marketing. They both asked Mrs. Coniniilzky, who lives on the second floor, to bave an eye out for the children. ■ Mrs. Comi))it2l.y afterward found that she herself had logo out; so, after taking a look at the sleeping beauties, she decided that they would be all right until their mothers returned, and went about her business. '"-"'. It was only half an hour from the time Mrs. Commitzky went away until the mothers returned and found their babies missing. • When the sweet little darlings were found placidly sleeping, every woman on the block was brought in to give her opinion as to which was which. No one. however, could tell one baby from the other, and things looked as though the whole business was going to result in a very interesting tight. Matters were finally quieted down a bit and Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Houston both took a child, though the latter was sure she had not got the right one. During the argument both babies began to cry. "You've got mv baby, I can tell by tho way he cries I" shouted Mrs. Houston. * "Getont; you're crazy." "I'll have that child If I have to steal it," replied Mrs. Houston, and then Mr. Hickey, who owns a milk route, came to the assist ance of the women. "Let both the mothers go outside," he said, "and I'll cover the kids with a sheet, all but their feet. Then let the mothers come 111, ■ toss up a i enny [or first choice, and whichever gets which, why, let them have no more talk about it." ,;■■ Alter some talk, that was accepted as sat isfactory. ,-.; »_!J i "Ri_!l«^'"<BiWßa*o» , W i WW Mrs. Houston won the toss and chose her baby. Mrs. Collins took the other, and j both shouted with glee because each had got the one she wanted. • •.'•_" . - As it is both women are satisfied, though the general impression about the house is ; that each has the wrong baby. : ' Just who "mixed the babies up" could not be learned, but it is thought to have been Elickey.— N. Among the curiosities which have at tracted a great deal of interest at the Cham ber of Commerce in the past few days is Xi bunch of strange flowers," strange .to most American sight-seers, but familiar to all readers. They are the Sacred Lotus flowers of Egypt, and one easily re-reads "Uarda" and "Ilypatia" as .he looks upon them. They are ol the water lily family, a fuel easily recognizable In both flower and leaf.' They look a little like the white water lily of ' the Upper Mississippi and therefore not unlike in general appearance the magnolia blossom of the South. _ The upper edge* of the petals have a pink Huge and tbe flower is blessed with a fragrance of its own. The blossoms came from Hosmer P. McCnon's Fanita* ranch in: the Cajon.— San Diego Union, August 6. .Found Guilty in Two Minutes. .* X: J. Morton, tried for burglary on Thursday afternoon in Judge Yon Key depart' ment. was convicted in about two minutes bj the jury. He entered the residence of W.
