The most attractive feature about Andrew
Carnegie's New York residence is its collec

William Lloyd Garrison, son of the great

Keeley, the Philadelphia motor crank, is

in the last twenty years has absorbed tens of
thousands of dollars of other people's money
and caused half a dozen suicides.
Count Tolstoi is described as wearing
usually only such coarse clothing as is worn
by the poor classes. His shirt is worn out
side of liis trousers, in the fashion of the

leather belt.
Donaltl G. Mitchell, better known to the

Robert Garrett, since his return to Balti

self agaiu." "Mr. Garrett looks so well,"
said a gentleman who met him on the street,

Senator Evarts remarked to a Washington
reporter recently: "I think now that if I

The torpedo-boat Sand Fly, 520 tons, bad

They would bare let tbe guns go too but tor

Banker Morosini's Adventures in
the Land of His Birth.
"In the war for Italian in_pp»ndence,
while I waa sighting a gun manned by
sailors," said A. P. Morosiui, "a shell ex

all the gun's crew. A fragment of the shell
struck me on the head. I have tlie sour yet."
Here Mr. Mornsiui brushed from his lofty
brow the curling lucks which are the envy
and the admiration ol liis friends, and ex
posed lo view a deep and livid scar.
" How long did you lie upon the field of
battle before you were carried to the hos

" 1 was carried upon a stretcher almost
immediately to a cot," answered Mr. Moro

" Tt would have made the experience com

gretfully.
" I see you wish I had been killed," and
_Ir. Morosini bristled up rather savagely.
"I like your style."
" Oh, no, I don't. I should not have been
able to get this veracious history of your ad
ventures if you had been killed, you kuow,"
rcspouded the reporter.
" In the city of Venice, where I waa bom

the former partner of Jay Gould,"the houses
of the citizens open in their rear upon canals,
which form the great hi.hivays uf the city;
their fronts, on the contrary, face on beauti

people walk along the middle of the road,
and if they desire auy more rapid means of

A PARBOI' IN A DENTIST'S ROOM*
He Proves a Valu.ble Assist. nt to the
Knight »f tho Forceps.
At the Albany dental rooms in Wilkes
barre, Pa., tliey iiave a parrot that greatly
assists in the work of extracting teeth. The
parrot's name is "Ca>sar." He is a fine speci
men of his species, his intelligence being
something marvelous. Dr. Weller, who tins
charge of the loom, says he would uot part
wilh the bird for any money. And no woa
der; the parrot brings grist to the mill. The
bird dues its work this way;
A man comes to have his tooth pulled. lie
gets into the chair and then liis courage fails
i..iti. He tells the dentist that the pain has
guue away and that he will postpone Uie
operation until the next day. In nine cases
nut of ten the dentist is unable to persuade
the patient that it will be to his ljodily com
fort to have tha molar extracted. Then,
v. hen the man gets up out of the chair, the
parrott, who has been watching him all the
lime, takes him in eh irge.
"Oh, coward." yells the parrot; "you
haveu't the nerve of a chicken."
The man looks around iv consternation.
The parrot is partly hidden in his big ca.e
behind a screen. The man with the tooth
ache turns around to the knight of the for
e ps and inquires:
" What iemarks were those you just
made?"
"I said nothing." replies the dentist. "It
was the parrot who was speaking."
The gentleman U then introduced to the
patio. A pleasant conversation ensues.
"Nice morning," says the parrot; "tooth
pulled? No! You better; you cutch cold
when you go out; better have it nut and l>»
done with it; lots people hud teeth pulled
this morning."
The man with the toothache Is so dum
'minded over the parrot's talk that he hardly
knows what way to turn for the time being.
Theu the parrot orgs* him on agaiu, say
lug:
"Go 011. lt will ouly take a minute; tke
doctor is waiting for you."
Tnis is too much for the man. He goe3
lack to the chair and has the tooth removed.
'1 hen the parrot jumps all around his ca^e
and says: "Ob, ain't I happy; I feel so
happy with my big tooth out. " That par
rot, said the dentist, "can talk anybody
itito getting n tooth pulled. We had a
farmer in the other day. He wanted all his
teeth taken out and a now set made. VVe
wanted him to take gas. The old man s:iid:
'Well, now, by gosh, I don't know about
that. I often heard of people blowing out
gus and llieu dying; I don't think 1 will
risk it' 'Good boy,' shouted tne parrot;
'sensible man; don't you take gas; jost'sit
down there, snd pulling your teeth will be
just as easy as husking corn.' When
the farmer looked around and saw
the parrot, he said: 'Well, I de
clare; why that Idid talked like a
man. 1 guess I'll take his novice and let
you crack away at uiy -hewers.' Tliere was
no trouble iv pulling the old man's first tw >
teeth, but when the third one came ho
jumped two feet in the chair. 'That was a
nerv* clincher,' said the parrot. Tt wont
happen again; just keep nice and quiet now
and soon your teeth wili ba out.' Tnis
soothing advice had a ealiniug effect on tiie
farmer, and lie sank back into the chair,
perfectly siiti-fied with what had t.iken
place and what was to come. When (he
job was thiough the parrot »aid: 'Well
done; there isn't one man in a thousimo
who could go through such an ordeal; you
must have a wonderful constitution!' The
farmer smiled and said 'he guessed be

A Lighted Cinrile I'nt I od.-r a Farmer's
Feet to Secure Money.
The particulars of one of the most br_.il
outrages ever perpettated in St Clair
County recently came to light. A neighbo
of the farmer who was the victim of the out
rage brought the news from New Athen
this morning. Berry Todd is the name ol
farmer alluded to. He Is a bachelor, about
80 years of age, nnd lives nlone on his farm,
two miles this side of the little town of Ken
Alliens, on the Cairo Short Line RaDio-d.
The fact that he is supposed to keei> a large
sum of money about his house has long been
a source of annoyance t? iiim. Several tt—es
during the last few years burglars haw
broken into his house probably expecting to
secure the money he is reputed to have se
creted, but they never secured bovy of moi>
than ordinary value. Monday nigut he was
awakened hy a noise iv the house Bad
looked up to see two masked men standing
in front of his bed. The robbers had him
covered with weapons, and he cuuid Bake
no resistance. They demanded thnt he give
up the money he was said to have hidden,
and when he informed Ibem that lie had uo
money except a small sum aaiottntiu.to less
than Sl, they drugged him Irom his bed antl
bound him "hand and foot to ■ po«t. After
placing a gag in his mouth to prevent an out
cry they beat him unmercifully in tbe at
tempt to make him reveul the hiding place ot
his money. Not satisfied with giving him
blows they applied a lighted candle to hi.
feet and inhumanly burned the flesh tint..
their victim's agon zed struggles ended in a
lapse into unconsciousness. The robber,
left him insensible, still tied to the post, am:
took with them the only portable article of
value about the place, n rilie. When Todd
recovered consciousness he found the band
that bound bis feet bad been weakened by
the candle-flume so that he could lire ik
them, which be did. He then managed to
get away from the post and, with his hands
still tightly tied, he walked to tne railroad
track, where he found a crew of section
men. They untied his hands and took him
back to his home and later secured medical
attention for him. He is not dangerou-ly
injured, but the robbers' blows and the c m
dle-fiaine left painful wounds that will re
quire some time to; heal.—St Louis Post-
