THREE HOURS OF BASEBALL
Oaklauds and (ho Belters Battle
Thirteen Innings.
Patrons Get Their Money _ Worth and the
Tailenders Get Done Up on Whitehead
Little Bangle.
Ml-MMM" : MM\M- y
It took three hours of the hardest kind of
work nud 13 hotly contested innings to
wind up th-» baseball affairs for the day at
Oakland yesterday afternoon. Twice was
the score tied, once in the ninth and again
in the tenth. For three more innings the
battle waged with unabated violence. Then
Wilton Paradise Whitehead, after putting up
a phenomenal game at short, slipped on hi*
easiest of 14 chances and the citrus belter*
came oui on ton by si score of 5 to 4.
Bat tiM liiiliMK'ers have no need to feel
ashamed of the last of numerous defeat..
They gave the Angels a strong fight right
from the start, broke even ou swats and
pla\eil a better fielding game. Hard luck
lost them the battle, as the £__.___ should
have been over in nine innings. In the filth
inning with the score 2 to 1 in favor of
Oakland, and with men on second and
third, Terrible Tom, who had not turn off
anything worth mentioning, ripped out I
double which struck the line back of first
base. Umpire Gagus was not in position at
the time to judge the bit rightly and called
it a foul. No objections were filed, but had
tin- hit bfPii giveu it would have tallied two
nieu for Oakland.
I'ATHONS HISSED TIIEIK DINVKH.
The news of the tai 1 nders' marvelous
achievement in the previous game had the
effect of swelling the attendance. Streetcar
men avlio come in on their badges were more
numerous than usual, and the Oakland
small boys kicked some m ie boards ofl the
fence and crawled through the holes in
droves. In addition tj these the stand was
filled tvitli regular patrons, and they all
missed their dinner waiting for the last act.
It was the best all-round game the people
across the bay have seen fur some time, aud
they could not afford to miss any of it.
Lester P. German of Baltimore was feel
ing as well as be ever did, and pitched one
of his choicest games in consequence.
Phenomenal Balsz of Vaiiejo was also in
fine fettle until Lester P. accidentally soaked
liim in the ribs, which jarred some of tho
ginger out of the Pbenom, but he bore up
bravely. Both i wirier, were touched an for
11 hits, which dribbled along in ones and
t*vcs. It was an unusually busy day for the
infield, as six outfielders bad bnt eight
chances among them. J. Frank Homer,
who took Carroll's place in center, bad
nothing to do but stand around and wait
until lime to come in.
CLEVER MILTON* WHITEHEAD.
Captain Carroll sprung a joint in Thurs
day's came sliding to bases and Tip is
director-general of the tailenders for the
present.
For the most part th« play moved along
with clock-like regularity, interspersed
with brilliant flushes now and then. lute
head made two magnificent one-handed
stops beck of second, El uien and Hutchin
son startled the natives with their work at
third and Grandpa McCauley accepted 20
chances at first, besides ripping off a three
citsiitim swat in the tenth that paved the
way to victory for his side.
Cousin Park and Bill Hassarner vied with
each other in the i>asseu-ball department,
but broke even with three each. Otherwise
their work was above criticism.
Oakland took tlie lead, scoring in the first
and third, The Angels got one in the fourth,
and in the uext Hasty Wright shoved his
Side ahead with a nice two-Dagger. Oak
land tied them in the eighth, the Angels
reciprocated in the tenth and then followed
three innings that wrought the populace up
to the highest pitch. In (he last, with two
oat, J. Stafford tore off a triple, Wright sent
an easy one to Whitehead, which he juggled,
nnd all was over. They play en-day at
Haight street, with Homer and Roach in
the points. The score:

A letter received from Stockton yester

Club in the '-'.".th in St., has not been training
as carefully for this fight as when he exer
cised for the McCaun contest, It is prob
able that Turner rates the Salt Lake man
as being an easy snap. McAtiliffe thought
ho had a walkover with Goddard, but he is
of a different opinion now. Turner cannot

maintain that in justice they should not be

out of the surplus after paying off the sub
contractors and if there is none then to sue
ihe main contractors on their coutract for
