AN OLD LEGEND.
Toward the clos. of an autumn day a
party of } cuing folks were waltzing gavly
.-.fere the house of Forest-keeper William
Gulf. Two y. ung men played, one a violin,
the other a cornet. The setting sun sent
crt__son lights across the clear space upon
which they danced, aid colored with a live
lier rose the face* of the dancers.
After the heal dance Anna Gulf spoke.
"It is not fair," she said, "that poor
Harry should spend all the evening blow
ing into his cornet without dancing once.
Ccnrad, play alone for a time and let him
take part In the dance."
"And to reward him for his labors," added
the pretty Genevieve, *we will throw over
all the engagements made in advance, and
give him the right of choosing which of us
appears to him the most attractive."
Anna Gulf blushed nervously ; she was be
trothed to Harry. It was an engagement
arranged between the families. The young
man bad never appeared to particularly
distinguish the daughter of the forester;
but she loved him. Who did not? He was
the handsomest youth in the district; there
was not a hunter more skillful and hold, and
the prince had promised to raise him to the
rank of forest-keeper, which his father-in
law would resign to him upon his marriage.
Ov, her side, Anna was a good and pretty
girl who, since her mother's death, had been
at the head of the forester's family, her
father remaining a widower for the
sake of his two children, Anna and
Conrad. Anna was the idol of her father
and brother; they called her their angel;
and she was, in fact, something like one; her
body was light nnd flexible; her pretty face
a trifle pale; her black hair was arranged
low upon her forehead, and her deep blue
eyes, full if tenderness and melancholy,
gave her a spiritual appearance.
Without hesitation, Harry came and took
Anna's hand; her heart beat with difficulty,
-o much was she oppressed by surprise and
pleasure al this unwonted mark of his favor.
Conrad merrily drew the bow playing a
waltz composed by Harry, and the dancers
joined in.
Now the moon began to mount behind the
trees, and her white light overpowered the
purple shades. They ceased waltzing to
gather about the door of the cottage, where
old Gulf was .ing tranquilly looking en
the young people, and there they fell into
convers .tion. Ail at once Harry and Anna,
who bad remained behind, approached the
eld man.
"My father,'* Harry said, "we love each
otber; *rive U3 your ble.slng."
_fcey b.t i knelt and William Gulf
hie**-- them solemnly. c* nra i Dressed his
fntnre brother's hand. berry gave to
Ar.na a bouquet of heath flowers which he
had gathered, and the timid girl, entering
the bcus., hurriedly took refuge in her
chamber, where she shed tears of happi
ness which choked her. From this time
their engagement was ratified and they
were occupied with the preparations for tbe
marriage.
Bat one day Harry arrived, serious and
sad, at the house of the forest-keeper,
showing a letter which had come to trouble
bim. His uncle was dying at Mayence and
begged of him to come and close his eyes.
"Do not think of me, but go quickly,"
Anna said.
She could speak no more, for she had
hoped they would never be parted; this
news pierced i is heart; the most alarming
thoughts came flocking to his Imagination.
Happiness is such a fragile thing, there is
so little of it in reserve r_r a man, and that
which might come to him seems always to
_*- taken by others, that he hides himself
like a robber to enjoy It, and Is never free
from apprehension of loss.
Father Gulf received the news without
betraying any emotion, however.
•__ pleasant Journey, Harry." be said,
' _.iid return to us as soon as you can. When
do you start?" '?. ; :
"To-night I must meet the coach which
passed up. ii its way eight leagues from
here, to-morrow morning."
"Take your carhine," advised the old
man.
Toward midnight Harry departed, hit
knaDsnck upon his back, his gun under
his arm. He took a roundabout way. Be
fore be left the country he wished to see
once more Anna's house and the watch
light which burned in ncr chamber.
As he approached he gathered some
white heath blossoms and made of them a
wreath to place upon the window-sill of his
betrothed. Ha parted softly the branches
of the hazel bushes which surrounded the
cottage and deposited the flowers. Tho
light through the curtains illumined the
little chamber with a mysterious light.
Harry broke a branch from the hazel which
nearly touched the window and bore it
•way with him. Then lie walked on slowly,
taming sometimes and pausing for a long
time at any opening or turn of the road
which allowed him to see an. in the cottaca
under the moonlight. So he departed.
The next morning, when the sun threw
bis first rays into ber chamber, Anna opened
her window. Her hair was in disorder and
ber robe damp; she had wept all night, and
had sl-pt from exhaustion without disrob
ing. She found the white wreath, which
•he lifted to her lips and then fastened upon
ber breast.
Harry wrote frequently ; but It was neces
iary for him to remain absent for some
time, and poor Anna grew pale and despond
ent. Then ins letters came more rarely and
at last ceased altogether. Anna did not
complain, but her cheeks and eyes showed
hallows, and she wept In the silence of her
chamber. She became melancholy and
shrinking, flying even from the society of
her father and her brother Conrad.
Finally she fell ill; Conrad had written
four times to Harry, but without receiving
any response. One morning, therefore, he
started for Jiayence. Two months after
ward he returned in a carriage, wounded.
At the end of some days he died, killed by

proached his former friend, and, exaspor
■ted at not being able to prevent the wed
ding by picturing the sufferings of his sister.
Insulted and provoked Harry in public,
They fought a duel, with the result given.
Anna wept no more, but buried her tears
Id her heart. She devoted herself entirely
to the care of her father, who was pros
trated by the death of his son.
Meanwhile, Harry found himself the

Everything was new to him In this life of
luxury and pleasure, sad ho was happy.
A year after the. marriago his father-in
law died, and hi*. wife, but lately a mother.
desired to retire for a time to the country.
Ilarry bought a chateau at some distance
from Father Gulf's house, and there re
mained during the pleasant season. During
this lime Alma faded away, dying without
apparent pun. M:e was burled with the
white wreath that Harry had attached to
ber window the night of bis departure.
Thn new*, of her death sffected Harry
painfully. He felt that ho hail heeu the
murderer of this lovely girl, and his sew
found happiness failed ta give him peace.
On* evening, as Harry was returning
from a long hunting excursion, he strayed
from his path and by chance passed the
house where Father Gulf lived with au old
servant. It was a beautiful autumn even
lug, the light from the selling sun shining
obliquely across the dealing. Harry sighed
and quickened bis pace. lis walked very
fast, as if he heard the old man, who
watched through the night, praying for his
son and daughter, and saying:
"Harry, you have killed my two children ;
so will it be done to you!"
The forest was silent and mysterious In
the dim light, and became every moment
more somber. The moon had difficulty in
throwing a pale and furtive ray through tbe
branches. in vain Hairy sought to drive
away the painful recollections aroused in
his mind; in vain he recalled his wife, bis
child, all the pleasures which surrounded
him; the memory of Anna and the happy,
innocent days of their love threw a funereal
gloom over all his other thoughts.
Now and then a light wind bore from afar
the perfume of tie honeysuckle blossoms in
the forest, and it seemed also to him that
the wind breathed some measures, vague
and strance, of a song which was not un
known to him.
He went fortvard, then stood still, trem
bling. It must be an extraordinary danger
to make Harry thus tremble; he was the
bravest hunter of the forest Nevertheless
he did not raise his gun, for that which dis
mayed him was nothing human. He dis
tinctly heard some measures of a waltz
which he had once composed, and which
Conrad had played in the day when old
Gulf had blessed his daughter and her be
trothed.
He made the sizn of the cross and ad
vanced. Some women were singing. Be
*te!d his breath to listen. The words sung
were some which he recall, having written
to this melody one night, when far from
Anna. He bed never shown it to any one,
and nevertheless it was thus sung:
At times, when through the silent wood I tread,
It seems to reach about me as a palace towers;
The chestnut h-.u^hs high arch me overhead.
And from the ground ri*e perfumes from some
lowly Sowers.

Harry had nearly forgotten the words;
and yet he heard the singers repeat them
without missing a single syllable. liis hair
rose in affright, ye; he still continued his
course, and st a turn of the path came upon
an open space surrounded by high chestnut
trees, and mysteriously illuminated by the
moon.
He .a**, a strange spectacle a-* ha crouched
in a thicket. Many maidens, attired in
white robes and crowned with flowers,
waltzed and sang together upon the green
sward; but their garments wero whiter
than any material ho had ever seen, and
their flowery wreaths seemed luminous;
their steps were so light that no one could
say they really touched the earth; their
sweet and mysterious voices appeared not
in the least broken by their movements in
the waltz; their faces, above all, had a
startling pallor.
Harry now recollected the tradition of the
dance of the Sylphs; young girls who had
been abandoned by their lovers, and dying
unwedded, came at night to dance in the
wood in the moonlight. The wait, was in
terrupted for a moment aud Harry could
hear the sound of his own heartbeat-.
Some moments passed as they readjusted
their crowns of flowers, then the singing
was resumed, and yet again it was the
waltz that be had composed which was
sung.
The white-robed maidens Join«-d two and
two for the dance; one remained alone mid
cast about her a slow glance, as if search
ing for a companion; her figure was slight
and elegant; her dark hair was arranged
low upon her forehead; her deep-blue eyes
were tender and melancholy ; she was
crowned with white heather. It was Anna!
Harry felt that he was about to die. The
maiden advanced and took him by the hand ;
her touch was as cold as marble. He had
not strength to follow her, bin a super
natural power carried him along.
The song was sung, the waltz went on,
and Harry, always drawn forward in spite
of himself, waltzed with bis affianced. In
turn, one after the other, the phantoms
came and took' him by the hand and
waltzed with him. Ho became weary; a
cold sweat gathered upon his forehead,
and he was as pallid ns the dead. He was
stifling and wished to cry out, but could not
control his voice. Then Anna took him
again In her turn, and -till the movement
of the waltz Increased, hut Harry felt tbat
the white robe contained only the bony
form of a skeleton. He looked at her; she
no longer wore the bli.khair; he saw a
hideous death's head, still crowned by the
white heather. He struggled, but the phan
tom bound him in her aims and drew him
on into the movement of the dance that
now had a rapidity not to he imagined.
The next day there was found in the
forest the dead body of Harry.

Medal Contests of the California -Chuetz.n
Club, Grutli, Eictrccht and Turners'
Shooting Sections.
There was a largo amount of powder
burned yesterday by tho members of the
different rifle clubs who assembled at
ijchue'zen Park to participate In their
monthly medal contest. The California
Schnetzen Club, the Kintracht Club, the
l.i ii Club nnd the Turners' Shooting Sec
tion were well represented.
Beery target at which the shooters were
engaged contained a long line of marksmen,
who waited patiently their turn to get a
chance to shew their comrades how close
they could come to the center of tho bulls
eye. Many of them were disappointed in
the result of some of their shots as a strong
wind was blowing, and the rifleman who
forgot to nllow for windage soon found out
Hint his shots were drifting faraway from
the desired spot. As the wind was steady
it was not long before the participants had
their sights properly set, aud tho result
proved mure satisfactory.
THE 11 -OHM A (1.l 11.
There were more than GO members of this
club who took pert In their medal contest.
At times the event became very exciting.
George Helm started in well and in bis first
five shots scored 108 rings. When this was
followed up with 110 in the second five bis
friends saw that there would be a good
chance for him to beat the highest score of
the year— l 39 rings— made by Ed llovey. In
his third string of five he made 114 rings,
it was now generally conceded that all he
wanted was a little luck on his side for him
to capture the coveted diamond medal.
Helm shot on, scoring well until bis last
shot. Before firing hi* last shot all he
needed was a 20-rlng shot to come out win
ner, Luck was against him. however, for
just as he was about to discharge his weapon
he pulled out of the black and scored a 17,
thus losing the medal by throe rings.
Dr. Rodgers also did some fine shoot
ing, and the outcome of his endeavor was
watched with considerable interest. In his
first five shots the doctor made if. rings, in
his second five 103, in his third 105. He
shot well up to the last, and for his last
shot needed a 25 to beat the highest score of
the year. He fell short by four rings, but
made the excellent score of 116 rings lv his
last five shots. . t v

A GOOD HOT-WEATHER DRINK.
Two Ways to *_a"k_ <.lnj_. Ale and Mow
to Bottl- It.
New York World.
This Is a beverage at once healthful and
refreshing in warm weather. Thinly peel
two large lemons and put the rinds Into an
earthen pan with juice, which must have
been previously strained; one pound and a
quarter of loaf sugar, one ounce of bruised
ginger and a quarter ounce of cream of
tartar. Over these pour five quarts
of boiling water. Let it stand, and
when lukewarm add a tablespoonful
of brewer's yeast, which must be quite
fresh. Stir this quickly together a short
time and then leave it until next day to
ferment. Skim off the yeast, and having
carefully poured the liquid from the sedi
ment It may then be bottled for use. Take
care tint the corks are good; just before
using put them iv boiling water, and, hav
ing iced them In the bottles, let them be
firmly secured with wire. This quantity
will make rather mare than adnzeu bottles,
and will be ready tn two days. Another
way: Two ounces of whole ginger, bruised;
ttvo pounds of loaf sugar; the thinly pared
rind and strained juice of four lemons:
over this pour two gallons of boiling water.
When It has remained until lukewarm
spread a toast with vtast and put in it.
Let it stand all night, then bottle it off.
This quautity will make about four dozen
bottles.
.That's In a Num. •
According to a local tradition, probably
invented, ..ayvill., Long Island, received
its name in a peculiar fashion. The settlers
were gathered in debate upon the shore
trying to aeree upon a namo tor the place,
and one after another proposed his sugges
tion with, "Say. In 'il this (In'/" Alter
many suggestions had been rejected, some
one, barren of imagination but sensitive of
ear, proposed that the oft-repeated word
' _ay" be made the hrst liable of the
name, and that vllle be added as the second
syllable. The idea look, and, says the
legend, then and there the settlement was
christened Navvi 1 -.
