Embarrassed.
SCHACHT, LEMCKE &STEINER
Meeting of Their Creditors to Con
sider the Proposition of Ex
tending Indulgence.
The obligation of "collection day" yes
terday was the culminating tax on the re
sources of Schach'. Lerucke & Striner. the
well-known successors of the firm of G.
W. Meade & Co., forcing them to call a
meeting of their creditors.
The embarrassed linn is one of the larg
est firms dealing iv dried fruits, nuts and
kindred California products, it has been
in busiuass for eight years, and has fairly
won the good will and confidence of all
with whom it has had dealings.
Henry Sch;icnt, one of the firm, said yes
terday :
"We have experienced a decided falling
off of business during the past two years,
and jatterly t!ie difficulty of making col
lections lias forced us to take this step.
We considered that we ought to in all fair
ness give every creditor an equal show
and that was only possible through a gen
eral agreement.
"The liabilities of the firm will foot up
about 554.000, of which about 840 000 are
secured debts. Against this we h»T« as
sets which should be easily worth 5120.000,
so you can see that we are not in a hope
less condition. Three years ago we were
deine a $2,000,000 annual business, but to
day obligations to the extent of £15,000
are causing us to ask for time.
"Most of the creditors are local houses.
About six months ago we were hard up
and eecured some of the debts, among
them being an overdraft at the bank.
"Our assets include some valuable min
ing uroperty in Lower California called
the Calrcelli mines, valued at from 540.000
to 850,000. Tnere are al«o considerable
balances due us from the East and our
Btoclt is heavy.
"All we ask is time. We may perhaps
be able to get straightened out in three or
six months, but have asked for a year, and
tne creditors seem to be fuToribly in
clined to any reasonable proposition."
Another member of the firm said that the
uncertainty in s4lver legislation had af
fected some of its assets and prevented
realization. Now: that silver matters were
being settled, it was only * question of
time before the assets would resume their
value and be available without sacrificing
the rights of a single creditor.
At the meeting of creditors in the morn
ing a committee of seven was appointed to
have the books of the firm experttd and
report back to another meeting to be held
to-day as to the : best course tf> pursue.
Tiie committee included Matthew Turner,
J. M. Kothschild', W. H. Morrison, Henry
Mohr, Air. Wood;. Jonas Erlanger.

THE STOCK MARKET.
The market opened rather heavy yesterday, and
it was the general opinion that stocks were going
to sell down again, as there was plenty of stock
offered o& the early call of tne Pacific. In this
dealers were mistaken, as good buying orders of
Fox, Marks and Epstein caused quite a reaction in
the big board, and some lively fluctuations fol
lowed from that on. Prices reached the highest
figures of the deal In many cases and the demand
for stock was strong and healthy. The weekly re
ports placed on file during the day did not show
anytning of importance, but private auvlces were
more encouraging. The bunches ot ore in the
winze below the 1300 level of Norcross continue
to hold up well. An Increase In the working force
at the -lacketbas oeen in «de. and work is expected
to be started up In the Crown Point to-morrow.
In examining the Con. Cal. <£ Va. shaft to see what
repairs were necessary the miners found the shaft
to be In far better condition down to the 1000
level than wits anticipated, and a great deal leas
work will 10 required to fix it up than was looked
for; consequently they will be able to follow out
Mr. Rules idea much sooner than wasanllctp»teil.
The demand for Best * Belcher yesterday proved
quite conclusively that the insiders were willing
to gamble on future results.
On the early call of the Pacific Con. Cal & Va.
sold down to t'i 76, ophir 91 35 and Best &
Belcber $1 35. In the big board Con. Cal. j. Va.
wag quite steady at 92 85 and the others were un
changed. After the call they were all very strong.
Con. Cal. & Va. selling up to $.!, but shading off
again before adjournment to $2 90 and closing
quite heavy at that figure.
On the 2:30 p. m. call they appeared a little
shaky, but this sh»klness disappeared after the
call, when Ophlr jumped to *1 60. Curry 75 cents.
Best * Belcher 91 76 and Con. Cal. * Va. 93 10,
with the balance of the market following salt
under very lively trading.
