Apropos , the subject Washington's
Birthday ought to have merited the
"Pilgrim's" attention.
' THE Denver Republican is correct
when it says that "the time is coming
when the labor'of honest men will not
' ' . . *
suffer by competition with convict labor.
The whole system will be abolished. To
encourage prison labor is nothing more
than to put a'very high barrier in front
of the workmen who has kept out of
jail. There was never any justice nor
* spark of public spirit in it. The worhl
is waking up to this. "
IT is stated definitely and generally
believed that Senator Miller , of New
York , is firmly opposed to President
Arthur's candidacy for re-election. As
the President has not admitted that he is
a candidate the announcement is shorn
of much of its force. The Senator has
suddenly developed into a politician of
Ability an'd strength , and will piobably
largely influence , if not control , the del
egation from New York to the National
Convention. The machine is dead.
Long live the machine. Topics :
A TELEGRAM from Salt Lake says
that city has been governed by a polygamist -
amist Council for thirty years , but on
the 19th anew Council was elected un
der the Edmunds law and qualified.
Alderman Raleigh , a Mormon Bishop ,
boasted having served ever since the
city had a CouncilHe said not an act
of his gave greater satisfaction than the
one which disfranchised him , and called
upon the members of the new Council
to enter into polygamy and gain dis-
franchisement. D. H. Wells protested
against the election held by the Utah
Commission , and would not give up his 1
place in the Council if the newly elect
ed had not been Mormons. Raleigh and
Wells have several wives each and are
prominent church officials. Jas. Sharp ,
the new Mayor , made a speech indicat
ing that he and all of the new Council
would bbey instructions in defiance of
Blair , and 'go into polygamy. The whole
city government is in the hands of sup
posed monogamists. It is influenced
by the church and rebellious to the law
of the land.
THE dispatch from Washington in
yesterday's Journal to the effect that
the Commissioners of the Land Depart
ment had rendered a decision invalidat
ing the patents of 274,000 acres of the
B. & M. land grant in this State is quite
startling. The company is given thirty
days to show cause , why the patents .
Should not be cancelled and the land
revert to the Government. The reason
assigned for the decision is that these
lands are in excess of the amount the
B. & M. is entitled to under the act of
1869and the supplementary acts there
to It is presumable that the lands in
question are those last patented , but lie
north of the Platte river. But nothing
definite is known at these headquarters
up to this writing. If the company
fails to establish its rights to these aiN
lands , a greater part of which have y
probably been sold to innocent purchas nN
ers , Congress ought at once to pass a ei
law authorizing the Land Department tcft
ft
to carry out the contracts made by the al
Company , on the part of the Govern * t hi
ment" Lincoln Journal * 10

been visiting his uncle , J. A. Davis.
The young people's party at G. B.
Nettleton's passed off pleasantly. The
refreshments consisted'of cakes , apples ,
pop-corn and forfeits. A "candy pull"
added greatly to the amusements of the
evening.
There was a dance at Geo. Fredricks ,
last week. We have not learned partic-1
ulars , but judging from the "far away"
looks in the eyes of some of the boys ,
the next day , that their minds were still
occupied with pleasures yef'dimly seen. "
The arrest of John Whittaker , last
Saturday morning , by Sheriff Welborn ,
to answer a complaint made by A.'A.
Phillippi , charging Whittaker with hav
ing written a libelous article to the In-
'dianola Courier of February 7th , con
cerning him , ( Phillippi ) , caused a slight
quickening of the public pulse. Both
parties were held to appear at the next
