A WRITER in the Century brings up
again the old proposition to make ex-
Presidents United States Senators for
life. He suggests an amendment to the
Constitution which shall add to the two
Senators from each state "such persons
as shall have served to the close of a
term as President or acting President of
the United States" a very skillful form
of words which would cover the case of
R. B. Hayes. The writer would have
each "President-Senator" paid a salary
"equal to one half the .salary which has
been allowed him while President"and ,
he urges that the cost of these supple
mentary Senators would be very slight ,
as there are seldom many ex-Presidents
living at one time. The economical con
sideration , it may be remarked , is not
the most serious obstacle to a plan that ,
however attractive , does not exactly fit
in with the general scheme of the Con
stitution. Everybody will agree , how
ever , that a man who has filled the office
of President ought to have something of
value to contribute to the general coun
sels , and that a plan that would have
enabled the nation to profit directly by
the experience and influence of Wash
ington for more than two years longer ;
of John Adams for more than a quarter
of a century ; of Jefferson for more than
seventeen years ; of Madison for more
than nineteen years ; of John Quincy
Adams for more than eighteen years ;
of Jackson for more than eight years ;
of Van Buren for more than twenty-
one years , and of Grant for more than
eight years after the expiration of their
several terms , would have much to rec
ommend it. There have seldom been
more than three ex-Presidents living at
any one time the largest number be-
ng at the opening of the war , when
Van Buren , Tyler , Fillmore , Pierce and
Buchanan were all alive and at the
) resent time the "President-Senators"
would comprise only R. B. Hayes
and C. A. Arthur. Perhaps it may be
thought that a Constitutional amend
ment to get them into the Senate would
scarcely be worth while.
THE Rev John W. Scudder , of Min
neapolis , seems to be a second edition
of Sam Jones. ' 'None of your white
aced damsels for me , " he recently shout
ed in a sermon. "Give me the nut-
who abandons her sun-bon
> rown girl , -
net , who can climb a tree with any boy ,
who prefers good bread to chocolate car
amels and baked beans to angel cake.
fhe kind of an angel for me weighs one-
mndred and forty pounds and has more
call for crash towels than cosmetics.
ler waist is more than nine inches in
circumference. She is straight as an
arrow , sleeps eight hours a day. has a
clear head , a bright smile and is a joy
to those around her. "
THE B. & M. Co. now have a force of
men at work putting down a well atBert-
and , which will cost them $5,000 when
completed. The well , will be between
250 and 300 feet deep , and 14 feet in
diameter. A depth of 200 feet has al
ready been attained. The company will
ilso dig a well at Ehvood as soon as the
) resent job is finished. The people of
lwood are now dependant upon the
) ortable water works system , operated
> y farmers in the vicinity.
THE Hastings base ball club played
at Bloomington , Saturday , when they
nitiated the Bloouiimrtonites into the
litherto unknown mysteries of the na
tional gome , with a score of 20 to 1 in
their favor. Higsby of Red Cloud who
caught for the Bloomington nine made
their only score. MeCook can rustle
a "scrub nine" that can do better than
hat , "for money , marbles or chalk. "
3halk being the "preferred stock. "
