AOCOMAU COURT HOUSE, VA,
Entered at the I'o.xt Cl Voe at Aceomac C. H.,
Va., as Second-class Matter.
Saturday, May 30, 1908.
The public schools of Aceomac have
closed and the reports received front
them show, that remarkable progress
has been made in every department
of work during the past session. To
that success the teachers trustees and
other school officials, of course, have
contributed but a master hand has
guided them and it is only fair to
say, that greater praise is due lo Su?
perintendent Joynes than any one
else. Some idea of their growth and
development may Inferred from the
facts and figures submitted by him in
regard to the Aceomac Hif.li School
at its closing ex-reises last week.
He did this by taking the school for
month Of January, 1901, and compar?
ing it with the month uf January ,1908,
as follows: In January, 1901, the
school enrolled .">;> pupils and made
an average ci lily attendance of ;>7.
For January, 1908, the school en?
rolled 189 and made an average daily
attendance of 143 pupils. Cost per
pupil per month enrolled in January,
1901, was 81.23, cost per pupil per
month in January, 1908 was $1.12.
Cost per pupil In average daily atten?
dance for Jaauary,1901,was$1.76, cost
per pupil per month in average daily
attendance for January, 1908, wai
81.44, a saving of 32 cents per month
per pupil. This o*2 cents on the ls;;
pupils enrolled in the Aceomac High
School amounted to 868.56 saved for
month of January, mus, as compared
Wita month of January,1901. In Janu?
ary 1901, the pay roll for the two
teachers employed was 965. For Janu?
ary, 1906, the pay roll same school fe r
five teachers employed was 8206.
These figures speak for themselvi 8 in
regard to the Aceomac High School
and a like growth and development is
shown in the most ot the schools Of
the county.
The people of Norfolk are tobe con?
gratulated for their success in their
campaign, which closed Monday night,
for the raising of a fund for the con?
struction of a new Young Men's
Christian Association building The
sum, of $1-50,000 was asked for by the
building committee and the result on
the last day showed that the sum of
$17,000 in excess of that amount had
bec n subscribed?an almost incredible
sura the population of that city being
taken into consideration. Other cities
in the State too, recognizing the value
and importance of the Young Mens
Christian Association, have in late
years responded liberally to the de?
mand made upon them in this respect.
The people in many of the counties of
the State too would subscribe freely,
if a movement in that direction was
made. Who will take the lead for one
or more in this county'.'
Thos. F. Ryan, of New York, with
a legal residence in this State, has
I cen elected as a delegate from Nel?
son county to thc State Democratic
Convention which meets in Roanoke
in June, with the view, it is stated, of
assisting in the fight against instruc -
tions for Wm. Jennings Bryan.
In what way he is to help ha
been revealed but, whatever the
methods, his presence at tbe Conven?
tion will, doubtless, bc welcomed by
the friends of Mr. Bryan. Instructions
for him, heietofore thought to be un?
necessary, could be had for the asking
With Mr. Ryan present and his career
in evidence before that body in con?
nection with railways and other cor?
porate interests. It is to be hoped,
that this slimulus will bi given to the
delegates, to make them discharge
this duty, due to the people represen?
ted by them.
General Stephen D. Lee, comman?
der-in-chief of the United Confederate
Veterans died, after a brief illness, on
Thursday morning in Vicksburg,
Miss. The illness, resulting in his
death, was due, it is stated, to over
exertion at a reception given to
Northern visitors on Thursday of last
week.
With the passing away of General
Lee the South loses one of the last
three surviving lieutenant-generals of
the Confederacy, who won for him?
self imperishable fame in many battle
fields in the war between the Slates.
In peace as in war he has proven him?
self worthy in every way of the con?
fidence of the people of the South and
lie will be forever numbered among
their greatest heroes.
The general conference of tie
Methodist Church, in session in tba
city of Baltimore, on Tuesday, put
itself oil record as endorsing unquali?
fiedly the work of tho Anti-Saloon
league and also favoring local option.
Both of these positions are new with
the church, as up to this time no so?
cial organization has had the specific
endorsement of the church, while il
has stood, on the other hand, for ab?
solute prohibition everywhere.
