Monday at Starke in attendance up. on the Bradford circuit court, where he is one of the attorneys in the de. feline of the Heiinett brothers, charg ed witli murder. The case was con tinued until next term. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Derby treated a party of friends to a ride on the river Sunday afternoon in their gasoline launch. The party stopped at K.in Mateo and went through the Crosby orange grove. The total assessed valuation of real and personal property in Putnam county, on which taxes are being collected for l!t04, is $2,707,524. Ac cording to these figures Putnam ranks twelfth in assessed valuation of the forty-five counties in the state. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Parrott of Atlanta are sojourning lorn time in the city. Mr. Parrott is the presi" dent and L'oneral manager of the Piedmont Hotel company of Atlan ta, and the Piedmont is the souths most palatial hotel. Mr. Parrot is also prominent in the business, so cial and political life of his city and his acquaintance extends to all sec tions of the country He is an old friend of Capt. II . X. Snow of this city. Capts. Shaw and Spencer have completed their inspection, for the government, of the Ocklawaha river steamers. A pleasant surprise party was given last, night at the homo of Mrs. Lo'retta Bond in honor of Mias Katie Dunne of Fernandina. James E. Lane of Putnam Hall, one of the most popular young men in the county, was a visitor here on I'uesday. Mr. Lane is preparing to go to Panama in a couple of weeks where he expects to engage in the work of assisting in the construction of the Panama canal. Mrs. Madella blade Frazer of Syra cuse, N. Y-, who has spent the win ter here and taken a lively interest, in social matters, left for St. Augus tine on Wednesday. Mrs. Frunerex pects to remain in St. Augustine for some three weeks before going to her home in Syracuse. On Monday evening, March 27th, an entertainment will be given in the opera house under the auspices of the Woman's Christian Temper ance Union. An interesting program of recitation, vocal and instrumental music has been arranged, and all who attend are promised au evening of rare pleasure. Lieut. Edw. Fitzgerald of Daytona, formerly publisher of the Dnytona News-Gazette, but now studying law at Stetson University, was a promi nent visitor in the city Tuesday. Lieut. Fitzerald was returning to De Laud after a few days' visit to Day tona, where he had been to join Co. "K" in the annual Inspection which occurred on Monday night. H. Cohen, Lemon street shoema ker, accused a little colored boy, Al len Evans, of stealing a pair of sec ond hand shoes. He was advised that he didn't have a good case, but insisted on a jury trial before Jus tice Itowton, who made him put up the costs. The jury found that the shoes had come properly into the hands of the boy and he was dis charged as not guilty. Cohen paid about $12 for his law experience. F. C. Cochrane, the bookseller and stationer of this place and who has orange grove interests at Welaka, has had a very successful season with his fruit. Mr. Cochrane was one of the fruit men in this section to erect a shod over his grove as pro tection in case of a freeze, and as a result he saved all his fruit in Janu ary, which has since been disposed of at high prices. Mr. Cochrane raises a line variety of large grape fruit. Rev. Dr. Phillips delighted good audiences at. the Presbyterian church last Saturday and Sunday with his practical and very instructive ad dresses on Sunday school work. He is an adept in his line, His plea is that, the Sunday school be modern ized in its equipment and methods of work. The subject of his Sunday morning talk was, "A Boy and His Bible." Every parent and every boy in the city could have listened with pleasure and profit. Dr. Phillips went from here to Orlando on Mon day. Messrs. I. L. Elwood and H. Y. Snow returned on Monday from a ten days trip to the headwaters of the St. Johns on the launch Doozie. They went to Lake Washington and saw and secured an abundance of fish and game, and also shot several large alligators. Mr. Elwood killed one of the latter which was 12 feet long. On Tuosday Messrs. Elwood and Snow left, for a trip up the Ock lawaha as far as Lake Harris on the launch Bug. Mr. Louis E. Madarasz formerly of this city, and Miss Adams, a promi nent society young lady of Ava, Mo., were married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Singleton in the latter named place on Wednesday, March 15th. Mr. Mndarnsz is well known here where he resided for a number of years. Was a member of the Gem City Guards during the Spanish American unpleasantness in 18U8, and evinced great interest in local military matters, being at the time of his removal to Missouri, the 1st sergeant of the company. Mr. and Mrs. Madarasz will make their home in Good Hope, Mo. The following society note from North Attleboro, Mass., was taken from the Pawtucket, (R. I.) Eveu ing Times of recent date, in which a former Palatka boy receives promi nent mention: l,A very successful presentation of the Spanish-American drama, 'Iu the Trenches' was given in Memorial Hall last night by the Independent Dramatic Club, and was largely attended, every sent iu the spacious hall bein'g occupied. Tho various parts were well taken and showed the result of much care ful study and preparation. The work of those taking part was of such a high character that it would be Ini possible to mention any particular one without mentioning all, as all were well nigh letter perfect. The drama was staged under the direc tion of Hollis Havey. Between t-ie first and second acts Asa Sawyer, the local favorite, rendered 'When the He s Are In the Hive' and 'She Sleeps 'Neath Oregon's Tall Pines.' He was obliged to respond to several encores and was the recipient of a handsome bouquet." Library Association Notice. Fos ter, Adjutant General of the State of Florida, and Col. Stephen T. Norvell, retired, United States Army, accom panied by Col. II. M. de Montmollin, Commissary General, and Lieut. Edward Fitzgerald, 2d battalion, 2d regiment, inspected the Gem City Guards, Co. 'D" 2d Inf.. F. S. T., nt the Armory last Tuesday evening nt 8 o'clock. There wire probably VM) people present lo see the ceremony and they were not disappointed in the showing made by the company. The inspection was the first in or der, after which the company went through!, the ceremony of muster, thirty-nine men answering to roll, call. Capt. Calhoun was then instructed to give the company a drill before Col. Norvell, the United States army instructor. Tho movements were executed w ith precision nnd reflect ed great credit upon the men, not withstanding tho fact that they have only been drilling under the new iu fanly drill regulations since the first of the year. The inspect lug olllcers were very much pleased with the splendid exhibit ion of the drill nnd the good appearance of t he company. This inspection places the local mil itia in the front rank or the troops and speaks well for Palatka and Put nam county. Captain Calhoun feels proud of his company, ifs he well has a right to, and he gives entire credit to his of ficers and men, who have never fail ed iu responding to their duty and making their company second to but two iu the state. In the competitive drill for the company medal, Sergeant, Ralph Rankin was the winner. At the conclusion of the military features the young peopled enjoyed dancing until a late hour, the music for the occasion being furnished by Prof. Eckhardt's orchestra. A Beautiful Affair. The annual spring mid summer' openings of Jliss Kate Lucas' Milli nery parlors in this city ale always events of importance to the ladies of Palatkaand the county. That for this spring, just concluded, was one of the most successful ever attempted, while the display of millinery was so elaborate as to vie in elegance with similar events in the larger cities. During the two opening days the parlors were thronged with ladies from early morning until the-closing hours in the evening. It may truth fully be said to have been a social event. The parlors were tastfully decorat ed iu palms, bamboo, ivy and ferns, and these with the display of milli nery goods and novelties made up a bower of beauty such as was well worthy the attention of the ladies who thronged the store. Miss Lucas has long furnished Pa latka ladies with an ideal millinery establishment. She h:i-s the knack of securing the best in material and surrounding herself with artistic trimmers. The ladies of Palatka have shown their appreciation of her ellorts and the business has grown to great pro portions. It lias come to he regard ed as tile right thing among ladies in this section to wear a head crea tion from Miss Lucas' parlors. Lenten Season at St. Maries. It is expected that by the first Sunday in April the uhoir of St. Marks will be able to render for the first time, "The Crucifixion" by Stabler. Tho rendition of this grand musical composition will be a great event in church circles in Palatka. Mr. Stuart Hyatt is training the choir and together with Miss Dever eux and Mr. Vickers will sing the solo parts. Special printed copies of the service will be placed iu the pews of the church the night the service is rendered. The singing of the hymns by the congregation, the choir leading, will be one of the special features of the service. The story of the passion of Jesus Christ is in noway more effectively told than by the rendition of "The Crucifixion." Special seats will be reserved for the congregation at these services, but. the greater number will be free to the public. The lovers of music in the city will not let this opportu nity pass to hear this grand musical composition, grandly rendered, as it will be on this occasion. Special music is also being pre pared from "The Messiah" for Eas ter Sunday, and the proper celebra tion of this great religious feast will be the aim of the congregation and rector. A special Easter offering of $300 is asked by the rector and unless all signs fail the amount of the off ering on this day will not fall below the above amount. Turpentine Deal.. Ge.i. A. Powell who is spending the week in the city has just con cluded the purchase of the interests of W. A- Williams and Hazzard Hardin in the flrin of Giles, Powell & Co., at Bowling Green, DeSoto County. This firm owns some 24.000 acres at that place. Mr. Powell ' has also just concluded the purchase of a one-half interest in the firm of F. C. Powell & Co. at Espaiuda. The consideration for the above purchases was about $15,000.
