A relic of the gold fever day of '-19, says the Philadelphia Telegraph, took the authorities of the mint by surprise jesterday by presenting a claim against the Government for $2,210 worth of gold bullion deposited there on June II, 1Sj3. Tho relic was Alexander Squires, a paralv ic, who arrived in New A'ork on Saturday by steamer from Pan Francisco. He was 7.'1 years old, attired like a denison of tho unpopu lated districts of tho west, vvithcow hido 1koU and a general border-life aspect. Tho mint doorkeeper took him for a crank until he exhibited a certificate of deposit for $130 worth of gold in the mint at San Francisco. Tlic man was a nativo of Bichmond, A'a. He went over the plains in the days of the gold excitement, ami dug enough gold duet to come luck and deposit 121.90 ounces of gold in the mint and receive a certificate for it. A record of the deposit is on the book at tho mint today in the name of A. Squires. The old man, after he was r.dmittad to the mint, loosened a portion of his habit, disclosing a time worn and stained leather belt, with pouchc, around hid waist. From this he took a faded and crumpled certificate from which everything had become ob-cured by time except the printed matter in red letters. The printed matter in the blank spaces was entirely unintelligi ble. An acid test was applied to it, however, and brought tolight the faint outlines of-i'A. Squires," and the ob scure figure "35" in the blank space for the date. The old man said he re membered that tho day ho made the deposit was Monday, and an old al manac showed that June 11,' 1835, oc curred on Monday. Before ho will be able to get his money, however, Supi. Pot will require him to be properly identified by s-omc one who kn'.ws him to be Alexander Squires. Outside of this matter of form a a protecon to the mint officers, there appears to be no reson to doubt that the man's whole storv is true.
