In the earlier history of the West, when military posts were generally on the extreme frontier, some such system as that of post traders was necessary. Since then towns and cities hae generally grown up in the cloe vicinity of posts, and which have merchants who can now furnish to the garrison such stores as a post trader has usually kept. It is believed to be a wise policy to discon tinue as rapidly as possible a privi leged class and permit the trade of military posts, outside of the regular governmental supplier, to take its reg nlsr channels." A successful boring for honey has been made In North Tennessee. For many years swarms of bees have been noticed by boatmen on Fox Bluff, on tho Cumberland river, near Franklin, Ky. Tho bluff is one hundred and seventy feet high, and the river's channel runs directly under it. Tho bocs have been observed about a big fissure near the center of the bluff, and tho opening could not be reached from abovo or bo low without great dangerof being stung to death. As tbe bees had never been robbed, It was belloved a large amount of honey was stored in the cliff, Re cently a woll-borcr visited the bluff and was at onco impressed with tho idea that ho would reu-b the wonderful honey storehouse with his drllL After some coaxing, ho persuaded a number of farmers to undergo tho expense, and a three-Inch holo was bored from tho top of tho bluff. Atadepth of eighty-five feet tho drill struck the honey. Afca-aptr eUt Importance, f f A new mechanical telephone of extra ordinary power has recently been excit ing considerable attention In London and some other cities and towns in this country, writes a correspondent of Kature. It Is of American origin, like so many other modern improvements of exceptional character, being the. inven tion of ono Lemuel Mellet, I believe, of Boston. There have been many previous mechanical telephones, as your readers ar aware, some of which have obtained much publicity for a short time, and ihea hsr hn heard of but little more; but having had an opportunity of exper imenting frequently with the sew In strument and observing Its vocal pow er, so to speak, under very various cir cumstances, I can not doubt it has a great future be!:ro it. , it( t It maybe clearly stated at onco that the pulsion instrument Is absolutely in dependent of all electrical aids or.uw' pllances, and therefore ntt-ds netfller battery po er to bring it into play nor insulation of any of its parts to keep them effective. It consists solely of two cheap and simple initrumentsconnected by an ordinary non-Insulated wire of copper, or, better still, of a double steel wire, the two parts being slightly intertwisted, say with about a single turn In a couple of feet. The wire (or wires) Is simply looped to tho lnf trvment at either end, the connection being made in a few seconds. The instrument consists of a ftHak -'in .'combination with a series of smairfplral springs Inclosed In a case of some three or four Inches in diam eter. These springs, arranged In a man ner that has been determined by ex periment, and so as to produce harmo nized vibrations, appear to possess the power of magnifying or accumulating upon tho wire the vibrations hlch the yoioe sets up in tho disk, and the wirs seems to possess undoubtedly does possess the power of transmitting to great distances, and giving out upon a second pulsion Instrument the sounds of the voice. .o4 The ability of this simple system of springs, disks and wires to convey con versational and other sounds to con siderable distances with great clearness and distinctness, reproducing tho verj tones of the voice and the qualities ol musical sounds w ith but little reduction or modification, is most surprising, and to none more so than to tho many men of science who have been recently ex perimenting with it l The writer of this notice can not, per haps, do better than state his own expe riences with this system. After exam ining and experimenting over several short longths of wire, some of them ex ceeding a mile and a half, ho last week went to the Flnchlcy Road Station ot tho Midland railway, from a point near tuVuloh m iiza had ben Mivayod. to nesFthe Welsh Harp Station, a distance of three miles by the line ot railway, and of more by the track of tho wire, which for the larger part was carried by the telegraph-posts, to which It was at tached by very simple means. Conver- I sation through this length of line, of over threo miles, was exceedingly easy; Indeed, so powerfully was the voice transmitted that an ordinary hat suf ficed for all the purposes of the second instrument, without going near, to which conversation was carried on repeatedly by means ot tho hats of three gentlemen who were present, the tops ot which wero merely placed against the tele phone wiro. -'f$i I then went into the garden of the "Welsh Harp," where a short length of wiro had been led between two points, the wire on its way from one point to the other being twice tightly twisted, at an interval of some yards, round small branches of trees of about one inch In diameter, being wound round and round the branch threo times in each case. Strange to say, this tight twisting of the wires round the branches in no way interfered with the transmis sion ot the voice from end to end of tha wire.. t 4s ) A third and last experiment was made with a wire laid obliquely across -the Welsh Harp lake, and allowed to sink to and rest upon the lake bottom. The length of tho line was roughly estimated at about oiio-thlrd zl a mile, and from end to end (excepting a few yards at each end where the wire was led from the water's edge to tho telephone box) the wire was completely immersed, and without any other support than the bot tom of the lako offered it. Yet, not withstanding this immersion of tha whole wire, conversation was carried on through it by means ot tho pulsion in struments without the least difficulty. In fact, the voice came through the im mersed wire, and the longest wire (of over three miles) previously mentioned, with greater purity and mellowness than through shorter lengths. ,m r ' 3 Tor Slreplraa People.
