' Burns' rongs were sung by Ed. Scott, W. Borthwick, A. McLennan and W. R. Thomts, while V. Strachan and V. Morrice read se lections from his works, the company spending a very enjoyable evening, finishing the night's entertainment by the whole company singing Auld Lang Syne. i Legitimate burnt cork seems to have gone out of fashion, but the ap pearance of a genuine o'd-fashioned troupe in the Gorton's at the Prince.? opera house last evening demonstrated that it had not gone out of public fiivor. It is true that the Gortons did not come here heralded by any boast ng advertising or loud promises, but fthey attracted a crowded house on their first appearance, and succeeded in more than pleasing their audience. The company is artistically if not nu merically a sirong one, especially in music' their band beinz one of the finext that has ever been heard in the Princess. The songs were well puntr, tho jokes nearly all new and well told, the end men being funny without -being vul gar, the clog dancing remarkably clever, the specialties good if not new, and the farces far funnier than the usual run, and lucking that 'horseplay which characterizes so many of them. Sporting dogs, which are used in mud, snow and wet, are strangely clever and "julck in cleaning and drying tiir coats, and it is a suro sign that a dog has been over-tired if ho shows any trace of mud or dirt next morning. Most ot their toilet is done with tbe tongue, but they aro very clever at using a hush or the side of a haystack as a rough towel, one small spaniel which was allowed to live in the house was well aware that if he returned dirty he would not be admitted indoors. KaUeri I'lcurrft on Soft Wood. Ordinary molding and stamped work and the papier macho and pressed saw dust embossed work have been on the market for a long time, andbutfow peo ple mistake them now for hand work. Ilasswood can bo compressed to a very J large extent, and will swell out again to its original proportions upon being steamed. This property is utilized in the following manner: A pieco of the wood is subjected to great pressure un der a dlo or stamp. This stamp presses down parts of tho soft wood, in a more or less claliorate pattern, lower than the rest of tht-surface This process can be quickly performed, and the pieco of wood is then passed to a planing ma chine, which in a twinkling planes down tbe surface of the wood just even with the top of the compressed pattern. The piece is then taken over to tbe steamer, wbcro the warm, damp vapor soon swells the compressed parts back to their orig inal size. Thus a handsome raised pat tern is produced on the planed surface ot tno wooa wnicn can naruiy be dis tinguished from genuine hand-carved work. Scientific American.
