When the St. Louis Silver conuen
tion met and alter the call for con
vention had been read, Francis G.
Newlands, of Nevada was introduced
by Chtirtnaa Mottw temporary chair
man. The delegates gve him a hearty re
ception. He made a strong epesch defining
the issues of the campaign, arguing
in favor of the fre coinage of silver
and tulocuinir the nominee of the
democratic convention and appealing
for a union of all the forces favorable
to ailvrr.
When the temporary chairman fin
ished speaking, the roll was called by
staffs toget the names cf the com
mittee on credentials.
The following telegram was recciv
from Senator Teller:
"I. N. Stevens Southern Hete1, St.
Louis:
The monoy question overt hdowe
all others. On its rightful decision
drpauds the prosperity of the people
buiI the perpetuity of republican in
stitutions. All other questions must
be subordinated to it. A vote for
Bryan and Sewall is a vote for the in
dustrial and financial independence
of the American peoplo from foreign
domination and control, and they
should have the support of all oppo
nents of the gold standard.''

The convention took a recess until
4:30.p. m.

The report was received with cheers

Duriug his speech the chairman
said:
