Production of Butter and Cheese, Com. mandlng Highest Prices, Increase Steadily Live-stock Raisers at Height of, Prosperity. Dairying Is rapidly appronching ono of the first positions In Western Can ada agriculture. This does not npply particularly to any one of tho three Western Canada provinces, as they all participate in the dlstlnctloc A report recently published by tho Alberta Department of Agriculture shows that In 1018, In spite of adverse conditions of labor and the high cost of feed there was no decline In the Industry. It will be Interesting to know that the average number of milch cows per farm is 5.0. The total pro duction of creamery butter In the provinces In 1918 was 0,100,000, as against 8,9-M.OOO pounds In 1017. No better evidence of the growth of Western Canada can be given than by tho fact that In ten years the produc tion of butter has Increased from 2,500,000 pounds and of cheese from 88,370 pounds to 050,000 pounds. When It I.s known that In the production of grain so much energy was placed, and through which bank deposits were Increased, homes made comfortable, farms carefully tilled. It will be real ized that the Increase In dairy produc tion has been remarkable. During the past four years the price to the pro duce!' increased 75 per cent. Further evidence of the great Inter est taken In the dairy and livestock Industries is found in recent bull sales. At Edmonton the average price of 141 was $231.00; at Calgary 784 head were sold, bringing an average price of $209.13; while at Lacombe 170 bulls brought an average of $101.34. Sales In Manitoba a few days ago gave fully as good an average, or better. The sales were attended by farmers from all parts of tho country. The hi prices paid show that good stock w -required, nnd, no matter the price, t u farmer had the money to pny for It. As evidence of Oils we find that at a sale recently held at Carman, Mani toba, buyers were present from all parts of the province, besides some from Sakatchewan points. Five head of Rerefords brought $590 each A Shorthorn bull was sold for $700 nd registered Shorthorn cows brought $500 each. The establishment of creameries and cheese factories throughout the entire West Is on the Increase, and It will only be within the period of a very few years before Western Can ada will occupy n position In the first ranks In the dairy production of the continent. There Is complete government su pervision over creameries and cheese factories. The government takes care of the sales, looks after the manufac turer and employs as heads of the In stitutions highly paid and efficient managers. It may well be said that the dairy Industry In Western Canada Is rapidly coining into its own. At preseut it is but an adjunct to the parent or fore most Industry of the country tho growing of grain, but while an adjunct, It Is a highly Important one. The price of farm lands Is gradually Increasing, but not In the rapid proportion thnt has been shown In other countries. This rise In price does not materially Increase the cost of production, nor lessen the profits that may be derived from nn ncre of wheat, oats or barley. The advanco In the prices of these grains has more than doubled; the use of tructors has lessened tho cost. The reports from government sources are that the present year will show a great Increase In Immigration over the past four or five years. Tho man who has made a tour of Inspection of the country will give you the reason. He will speik of the fertile soil, of the' good crops, of the attractive climate, of compliance with the law, the splen did school system, the almost perfect social conditions that prevail. lie will have visited settlements composed al most solely of Americans, who havto built up their homes und villages, who have brought, nnd are applying, to day, their experience In economic land culture as applied to large tracts with tho result that he obtains yields on $30 an acre land equal to that former ly produced on lnnd that he had sold for $200 nn acre. The story of his success he has sent back to his friends In his home state. They In turn follow him, nnd so It goes on, and Immigra tion to Western Cunada Increases. Advertisement. KULTO rSLiio 1 COTTONSEED MEAL FOR HENS Experiments on Government Farm Show It May Be Fed to Chickens With Good Results. (Prepared by the Unlted States Depart ment of Agriculture ) Cottonseed meal In rather limited amounts has been fed with excellent results, to a pen of 30 pullets on the experiment farm of the United States department of agriculture. These pul lets averaged 5 i eggs each In 20 weeks, from Nc minor 1 to March 20, which Is practically qual to the best egg yield received during the year from any of the other experimental A Combination of Utility and Standard Quality. rations. No bad effects have been noted from this feed, either in the eggs or In the condition of the fowls, and the hens eat it freely. The ration fol lows : Scratch Mixture Dry Mash 1 pound cracked corn 2 pounds cottonseed 1 pound wheat meal 1 pound oats 2 pounds beef scrap 4 pounds bran 6 pounds middlings 5 pounds corn meal The scratch mixture Is fed sparingly so that the hens eat about equal parts of this mixture and of the dry mash. A large per cent of cottonseed meal in a dry mash without any beef scrap has not given satisfactory results. Pul lets fed a ration with 33 per cent cot tonseed menl averaged only 33.2 eggs apiece in one year. A considerable per cent of these eggs had discolored yolks, with green or brownish-green spots, making them unfit for market. These results appear to Indicate that cottonseed meal can be fed at the rate of about 10 per cent of the mash, or 5 ; per cent of the total ration, with an equal per cent of beef scrap with ex cellent results. In spctlons where cot tonseed meal Is produced, half of the beef scrap in the mash apparently can be replaced by cottonseed meal with excellent results. That It does not pay to keep poultry In the winter that la, some poultry has been demonstrated to at least ono West Virginia poultry raiser and his neighbors. Last fall he followed the advice of the poultry extension spe cialists and culled his flock. From a flock of 81 hens he culled out 39 and sent tiiem to the market. To his sur prise the remaining 42 birds produced as many eggs as the original flock and his feed bill was nearly halved. Severe hot weather Is hard on little chicks. Hastily collected eggs for hatching are likely to be disappointing. A turkey gobbler has strong wings, and strong feet; when ho gets cross he can do serious damage to children. Never market good, strong, vigorous pullets, as these will make your early layers, A good layer Is more active and nervous und yet mora easily handled than a poor layer. I.AKH 5Psfcs! fcm.
