Mr. A. Ward has returned from North
Dakota, where he lias been for some two
months looking at the country. He likes
the country line, and has taken him up a
homestead near Ken mare N. D. He is
goiug to move his family there in the
spring.
Jesse Jones, who has been at work at
Ritter, VV. Va., for some time, is on the
ridge now and will stay a few days.
G. W. Christian, of Harmnn, Va., spent
Saturday night with David Christain of
this place.
Quite a number of friends and neighbors
spent Sunday with David Christain,
They came in to see T. B. Elswiek and
Ellen MeGlothliu as they were going to
leave on Monday for their homes in Boyd
Co., Ky. They have been visiting friends
and relatives at and near this place for
three weeks.
B. P. Payne, of Doak, Va., was on our
ridge Monday.
Some of our young people from this
place attended church at Knob, Va., Sun?
day.
Z. Ward, of this place, went to Big
Creek Saturday,returning Monday.
There is a young Doctor by the name o
T. H. lliggins located at Alvis Bleoaiis
He is from N. C, and has a cood recom?
mendation. I suppose he' will practice
his profession in this section. We wish
him success.
Z. D. Ilolbrooks will preach the fuueral
of old Mrs. Sanders at Laird*s Chapel the
fourth Sunday in this month.

We are glad to notice in the last issue ol
the Republican, Oct. 5th., that a mass
meeting of the Republican party will be
held at Tazewell, on the 14ih. inst. to take
action on nomination of a candidate to
represent Tazewell comity in ti:e next
House of Delegates of Virginia. Why
not nominate a true hfe-long Republican,
as other counties of Southwest Virginia
are f-.iling into line? Let us respond
promptly to the call. I take the privilege
of saying that Ricblands will be represent?
ed at the meeting. Of course we have our
favorite but will support any true Republi?
can.

mon for this year last Sunday at 11 a. m.
at this place. We like Bro. Webb very
much and hope iie may be returned to the
work on this circuit.
Mr. John Helton aud wife stopped over
at this place to visit friends at the parson?

are making slow progaees.
Mr. McMurdo, of the U. S. Army is in
our town buying horses for the army.
Our town is quite lively over the outlook
for a new railroad from this place to Buch?
anan county coal fields and the timber
lands of the Yellow Poplar Lumber Com?
pany. That company owns many thous?
ands of acres of timber lands.

Jubilee National Convention of Christian
Church.
In 1S49 delegates fiom a number of
Christian churches met in Cincinnati and
organized "The American Christian Mis?
sionary Society." Today that Society
begins its fiftieth annual convention in
the same city. It will continue in session
for several days. Ten thousand delegates
are expected to attend this Jubilee Con?
vention. Yesteiday Revs. Philip Johnson
and J. N. Harman, Mr. Wm. L. Britts,
Mrs. Geo. W. Gillespie and Miss Annie
Wingo, left for Cincinnati to attend the
convention as delegates from the Chris?
tian church here.

Mr. M. C. McCoikle, who has just been
at Grahain, informs us that a force ofhands

It is understood that Mr. Joseph S.
Moss will not accept the nomination for
the House of Delikates tendered him by
the Democrats, but will make the race as
an independant candidate.

almost as fluently as English.
Rev. H. W. Leslie, of Bristol, Va., was
in town and preached in the Baptist
church on Tuesday night. Owing to the
insuliicient notice of the service the con
giegation was not as large as it should have
been. Mr. Leslie is doing evangelistic
work.

Grand Lecturer W. J. llubard and
Deputy Grand Lecturer James O'Xeefl'e
went to Castlenood, in Kussell county, on
Tuesday, where they instituted a new
Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Tuesday
night, which will be known as L'astlewood
Chapter R. A. Masons.
Owing to the change which Mr. Long is
now making in his telephone system,there
wili be interruptions in the service at times
during the next two weeks, as it will re?
quire that amount of time to make the al?
teration in the system. Then the service
will be much better than it has ever been.
Mr. I. C. Dodd, of Dodd & Co., who
had been for about two weeks in New
York buying goods for his firm, is back
home. He says he has laid in a splendid
stock for the fall and holiday trade, which
will meet the approval of his customers.
Occasionly a subscriber who has been
receiving and reading our paper for a yeur
or two years refuses to take the paper out
of the office, without settling his account.
This is not fair, we might say not honest.
We intend to make all such persons pay
what they owe us.
Mr. H. G. Peery has sold an interest in
the Tazewell Supply Company, at North.
Tazewell, to his brother, J. Arthur Peery,
Both of these gentlemen are thorough
business men and their already large trade
is steadily increasing. The merchant who
advertises and pushes Iiis business is the
one who succeeds these times.
Cards are out for the marriage of Miss
Louise Josephine Peck and Rev. Samuel
D. Long. The prospective bride is a
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Pe?k,
of Pearisburg, Va. Rev. Long is presiding
elder of Radford District of the Holston
Conference, M. E. Church, South. The
marriage will take place in the Methodist
church at Pearisburg on the afternoon of
the 18th. inpt.
Mr. and Mrs. A. D. W. Walton and their
little son Jo. left for Roanoke on Satur?
day. Mr. Walton moved all his house?

Mr. T. E, George, our county court
clerk, is at Abingdon attending the United
States Court. He is a witness for the
pnisecution in the case of the U. S. vs.
Strouth and others who killed Geo. W.
Ratliff.

The membership <>r the Methodist
church at this place and of the church at
North Tazewell have sent a petition to
Bishop Wilson for the return of Rev. J. S.
French as their pastor. The congregations
are about a unit in this, matter.
Mr. Millon H. Rush, of Bristol, Va.,
who was recently appointed Deputy
^Collector of Internal Benenne for the
Sixth Collection District, composed of the
counties of Washington, Tazewell, Russell,
Smyth and Grayson, was in our town on
Tuesday. He went to Pocahontas Tuesday
afternoon to lo'?k after the Government's
revenue interests at that place.

The eeventy-sixth annual session of the
Holston Conference of the M. E. Church,
South, met yesterday morning, in the
Bland Street church, at Bluefield, W. Va.
It is thought at least four hundred minis?
ters and delegates will attend the session.
The Conference is presided over by Bishop
A. VV. Wilson. A number of Methodists
from Tazewell, North Tazewell and the
county will visit Bluefield while the Con?
ference is in session.
Rev. J. S. French preached bis last
sermon for the Conference year in the
Methodist church on last Sunday night.
There was a very large congregation pres?
ent and the sermon was a splendid one. i
He preached from the text: "What think
ye of Christ?" During its delivery the
congregation gave -the most earnest at?
tention. Mr. French has won the affec?
tions of the membership of his church and
the respect and friendship of all the people
of Tazewell.
On the 10th of December, 1S97, Rev. S.
A. Donahue, pastor M. E. Church, South,
Pt. Pleasant, W. Va., contracted a severe 1
cold which was attended from the begin- i
ning by violent coughing. He says: I

who are unknown to the complainants and
who are proceeded against as unknown
defendants, and to have a sale of the said
lands in the proceedings mentioned or so
much thereof as may be necessary, and it
appearing from allidavit on tile in said
office that J. M. Cline is a non resident
and that there are creditors ofW. G. Cime
secured in a deed of trust above me ntion

and who are proceeded against as

that they appear here within fifteen

of TazeweU county, Virginia; and if said
account be not completed on that day,
same will be continued from day to day or
from lime to time until completed. At
