With the threatened dolugo of "talky'' plays, in which a great doal is said, but very little really happens, and whioh are generally styled under the indefi? nite beading of "the new school," it is a real relief to tura to tho gocd old melodrama, "The Cotton King," by Sutton Vano, will be tho attraction at the Academy of Music Tuesday, evening next, whioh Is Bald to bn a melodrama of unusual strength, combining all tho features which are calculated to appeal to a popular audience. Jack Osborn is tho hero. He is an American by adop? tion and has gotten immensely rich In cotton speculations in New York. Ho goes baok to England and buys the Ashton Mills, in wbioh he worked as a boy, as did his father and mother before him. He falls in love with Hetty Dray son, but a pretended friend. Richard Stockley trios to separate thorn. While pretending to be devoted to Osborn's interests, Stookloy, through a forged cablegram to Osborn's brokers in Now York, ruins the latter. Stoakley then spreads a story that Osborn is the betrayer of Elsie Kent, a mill girl, whom Stocttley himself has ruined. The mill hands attempt to lynch Osborn, but EIbIb Kent appears at the critical moment and denounces Stockley. The mob tben turns on him, but he Is saved through Osborn's in? tervention. Tho latter returns to America to recoup bis fortunes, makes a million on 'change, when he is at? tacked by thugs hired by Stockley, and his head so injured that he 1b confined nearly a yoar in a madhouse. Finally he oecapes, works bit way back to England, and all ends happily. Tbe soeuic and mechanical effects aro said to be on an elaborate Hcale. In the fourth act is presented tho Interior of a cotton mill, with the looms and print presses at work and an elevator In oper&tlon. This scene is a wonderful ploce of Btige lugenulty. It is in this &ci that tho villain thrusts Mlaa Dray son in ihe bottom of tbo elevator well, and attempts to have hor life crushed out by ringing for the elevator to descend. It slowly starts down, and la about to crush her when tbo hero rushes In, broaka down the door with an ax and drags her out just in time This scan* Is Intensely thrilling, and nevor falls to arouse the audience to the highest pitch of enthusiasm.
