Some papers in the state commenting
on the ending of recent litigation by the
Plant System of railroads and the Florida
Central and Peninsular Railroad com
pany think that not much has been
gained by obtaining a 3cent round trip
ticket good for 5 days Let us see if this
idea be a correct one
lion D E Maxwell second vice preai
dent and general manager of the F C tl
P R R Co made an argument to the
mil road commission dated April mh
1899 in which he gave the total passen
ger earnings per annum on the entire
system of roads both state and inter
state as 50441711 Sixty per cent of
this amount he estimates as earnings
from state passenger travel which would
amount to about 008000
If the passenger rate was a straight
> cent per mile rate instead of 4 cents per
mile on this line within tin state of Flor
ida then the above amount would he re
duced in cost to Florida passenger travel
onefourth or twentylive per cent This
would result in a saving to Florida pas
senger travel of about S3OOU per annum
on this line of railroad alone
Now it ran be safely estimated that at
least onehalf of the passenger travel per
annum on the above line of railroad will
be on the gent round trip ticket This
will save on that line of road alone over
forty thousand dollars per annum to
Florida travel The same amount it ran
wifely be said will be saved to passenger
travel on the Plant Sytrm of railways
Here is an annual saving of over SO
000 in passenger fares to tin people of
Florida by the oivnt round trip ticket
and yet some will ronUiul that the rom
miision is an expense to the people
Fven the 5cont round trip ticket was
not obtained until vigorous litigation was
instituted

charged with a violation of the state laws
against gambling The raid was made j
Wednesday night of last week hen it
was expected to catch the place in full a
blast but tlie result proved that the man
agers of the club had received a tip in
advance When Sheriff K J Chilling
worth arrived there he found that the
roulette and faro tables had been re
moved and their places taken by several
common tables over which several inno
cent games of cards were in progress
The raid is the outcome of a determined
eilort that is being made to drive the club I
out of existence Hon Frank Clark of
Jacksonville is in charge of the legal
fight that is being made against it and its
proprietors He is known as one of the
best lawyers in the state and is backed
in this matter by Air Flagler and the
East Coast Hotel system who have long I
recognized the demoralizing effects of the
club and determined to drive it out if
possible

1000000 Boxes of Oranges
Tampa Tribune Mr W R Fuller Jr
who is noted throughout the country for
his exact estimates of the Florida orange
crop recently gave the Tribune his first
estimate of the year on the Florida crop
for 1900 Mr Fuller says the excellent
condition of the trees throughout the ttute
makes it safe to place the probable figure
for this year at 1000000 boxes This
will be the largest figure since the freeze
when the usual crop of 6000000 was cut
at one fell swoop to less than 1000000
Since that time the industry has been
slowly but steadily resuming its former
size and it will not be at all surprising to
see an output of over a million this year
White Will Case
Tampa Herald Judge J B Wall has
rendered a decision in the White will case
from Key West His decision sustained
the action of the probate court from
which an appeal had been made This
leaves James A Waddell a winner in the
case so far while the beneficiaries of the
widow of John White are still to do what
they can to get a showing at the property
left in the estate Owing to the fact that
there is so much money in the case the
fight has by no means ended and it will
be carried through court after court un
til every possible means bus been ex
hausted in an effort to make a change in
the conditions
