The agricultural department has just
forwarded another big batch of vinifera
grapevines to Florida The vines filled
several large sacks and were sent to

Connor of New Smyrna James Bolton
of Cocoanut Grove J F Corrigan of St
Leo and Frank Dean of Miami
The chief pomologist ofthe department
Col Gustavus B Brackett
said to your
correspondent that the vines sent down
to Florida last year had done much bet
ter than ho had expected They were in
very bad condition and the cold weather
prevailing at the time shipment did not
help them any Mr Waite of the divis
ion of vegetable pathology has prepared
a report to the secretary describing the
progress of the grape experiment The
vines just sent to Florida says Colonel
Brackett are all perfect they were ship
ped under favorable conditions and they
are expected to do finely in Florida es
pecially as they are better rooted and
grafted than the first lot
Mr H J WebBer of the department
who attained wide prominence on account
of his apparently successful hybridization
of the sweet orange with the citrus tri
foliate a couple of years ago is quite con
fident that something will come of it He
told your correspondent the other day
F that evergreen specimens of this hybrid
successfully withstood a temperature of
17 above zero last winter The first fruits
of this hybrid may prove to he worth
less he remarked but one thing is al
ready established We have produced the
hardiest evergreen orange that exists in
the world at the present time It He also
said that arrangements would be made to
test the new hybrid in Louisiana Ala
bama Georgia and other southern states
next winter
Mr Webber also stated that the hybrid
pineapple plants grown from Florida seed
had exhibited characteristics showing
marked deviations from varieties now
known and a number of entirely new
strains are expected to develop among
them when they begin fruiting at Miami
next year
Pomologist Brackett suggests that indi
vidual fruit growers in Floritla who de
sire to make exhibits at the Paris expo
sition should work through the state hor
ticultural society which in turn should
communicate with the pomologist

currents in the waters of the Atlantic
have been made for many years past by
throwing overboard from steamers and
sailing vessels sealed bottles with a paper
inside giving the latitude and longitude
where they were tossed into the ocean
They drift about and frequently are
picked up along the Florida coast the
tendency of all currents seeming to near
our shores especially around the Gulf of
Mexico and along the coast of Central
and South America
Probably all articles dropped into the
Atlantic have been coming American
ward from time immemorial and there
is a very strou likelihood that much

which has been in session in Tampa for
three days concluded its work Monday
afternoon at the Presbyterian church

Twenty Cars of Peach Crates
The largest order ever sent out from
any manufacturing establishment in Flor
ida left Plant City Saturday morning
It consisted of a train of twenty solid cars
of peach grates was routed via the Plant
system and was shipped to one individ
ual at Marshalville Ga The Warnell
Lumber and Veneer company probably
the largeet manufacturers in this line in
the country were the manufacturers and
shippers Each car contained 2000 com
plete crates so that the Georgia grower
will receive 40000 crates in this one ship
ment Next week a duplicate of this or
der will he shipped to Georgia In all the
Warnell company will ship about 100 cars
to Georgia and 50 cars to Mary Ian I for
this seasons peach crop

High Returns for Oranges
W W Jacobs of Braidentown Fla
has won distinction in his native state by
receiving what is to be the hilrl1estaemcre
price per box for a crop of oranges He
recently finished shipping his crop of
Harts Tardifirf 149 boxes which were
sold in New York for 111550 netting
Mr Jacobs 90110 an average of a little
more than SO per box There were 27
boxes of fancies averaging 9 per box
brights and russets averaging above 7 to
650 respectively Mr Jacobs grove is
one of the most attractive in the Manatee
district
Shaker Settlement
The Shaker settlement situated about
ten miles from Kissimmee recently had
a visit from Joseph lloltlen head minister
of all the Shaker communities of the
cited States Friend Joseph expresses
himself as much pleased with the Florida
community and the success it is making
They have a tract of about 6000 acres
fenced inclosing a number of lakes stock
ed with cattle which they buy fatten
and sell again They also raise consider
able poultry pineapples sugar cane rice
cassava and velvet beans

in this state and foreign parts also were
