a rather anomalous eondiiion of affairs
A big committee of lemocnus ha been
appointed to keep up the poluicil end of
the function while the board of trade
has m committee of one hundred of all
political faiths and a fund of four thou
sand dollars to entertain the convention
and incidentally to capture it in the in
terest of a removal of tho capital to Jack
sonville
All our people are rejoicing over the
success of the committee in securing from
the school board a liberal appropriation
for the site and a school building for our
community The board is to purchase
threefourths of the town let for 450
which is cost and make an appropriation
of 2000 for a suitable building making
a total of 2450 Thiu amount with
that contributed by the citizens of the
community will give us all necessary
facilities for maintaining a first elass high
school
This scribe thinks that the heaviest
amende honorable of this end of the
century is the one that did not mend
matters and is reminded of an apology
made by the famous John Randolph of
Virginia to an offensive opponent whom
he had insulted by asserting that he the
opponent was not fit to carry entrails to
a hungry bear The apology was made
publicly and was to the effect that he
Randolph retracted the offensive hail
guage He was mistaken He wished to
declare publicly that his opponent was
fit to carry entrails to a hungry bear and
the incident closed
A crowd quickly gathered last Friday
evening about S S Jones to look at a
chicken snake that had crawled upon the
sidewalk in pursuit a toad His snake
ship did not like the looks of the crowd
so betook himself to a small oak which he
climbed to the great interest of the
spectators After sporting about in the
leafy retreat of the treetop for some time
the snake was dislodged by Charley Co
var who climbed up and caught him in
consideration of a silver quarter contrib
uted by several of the crowd who wanted
to see the fun Hut the fun came in
largely when the leading contributors dis
appeared just OH the snake mine down
and kept hid out till it was dispatched
The meeting called by Mayor Hughlett
at the town hall last Saturday to consider
and discuss school matters was pretty
well attended by the leading citizens of
Rockledge Dixons and Cocoa A grati
fying unanimity was developed to have
the schools consolidated and a suitable
building erected for the accommodation
of the pupils in a graded school A com
mittee of three consisting of Dr W L
Hughlett J F Woolen and Geo N
Hatch was appointed to go before the I
county school board at its next meeting
to nme the importance of immediate ac
tion in the matter and to secure if possi
ble the building in time fur the opening
of the next public school term
