H. GURNEY) PARIS, Sept. 3. (By mail). Every program of field sports at the front and behind it now contains a new event. Throwing the hand grenade they call it. Jack Eller is the in ventor. Everybody knows Jack Eller, New York City policeman and champion American athlete. He's a fine police man, but a liner athlete. As a mir ier there has been none better, and few anywhere near equal. Just now he's in Paris, running Army athletics for the Y. M. C. A. At camp not very long ago he saw a hand grenade squad getting in its daily practice. He tried to throw a grenade, and learned that it wasn't as easy as it looked. He had an idea, let him tell it. "The boys are always wanting some thing different. Here's a chance says I, for me to give 'em something different, and also help Uncle Sam. So I asked some of the experts to show me how good they are. From them I got a distance which will be about right to shoot at and sketch out my scheme. I allow, first, a run of 15 yards, same as in the javelin throw, you know. At 125 feet away from the middle of the liner I make the apex of a triangle which has sixty foot base. This base is 250 feet from the foul line'. A nice little throw, what?; "The idea is to take the 15 yard run and throw the grenade so it will land within the triangle. The nearer the base line the grenade hits the better the throw. Get me? Just borrow a grenade anywhere and throw it. BAN HORSE RACING Secretary of War Baker has put the ban on horse) racing and the meets, if any are held, will not hereafter be re ported by the Associated Press. This is the statement given out by that newsgathering organization, the last report being that of last Saturday. Horse racing has from time im memorial been the sport of Kings, but it finally degenerated into a gambling proposition that was far worse than the three card game of the bunco man. Good, clean horse racing is an exciting sport, and when the war is over we ex pect it to again become second only to baseball in the interest of the American public. "The idea is for both accuracy and distance. The old way, of throwing a grenade was to stand behind a piece of canvas hieher than vour head and let it go over it toward a bullseye . wmoer, a. u. isue, recorded in juag- LEGAL ADVERTISING NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE SALE BY SHERIFF No. 1637, Sheriff's Sale L. You couldn't see the target. That was for when fighting in the trenches. "But our men are going in pretty strong for open warfare. So they've got to chuck the grenades a whole lot like you chuck a baseball. They can see what they're aiming at in most cases. "The boys like it, and the officers are keen for it. I always get lots of competition in the event both Amer ican and French when there's a meet on' at a mixed camp. The French are mighty clever in the throw, and first along they gave our men some neat little lessons in sending grenades on their way accurately and far.
