GOLD ROAD MINE
TO START WORK
Continued From Page 1
pipe line instead of carrying the raw
ore to the mill below It was esti
mated that this method would save a
large amount of money yearly
Goldroad at one time was one of
the most important camps in the coun
ty More than 300 men were em
ployed in the mine and it is expect
ed that this number will soon be again
at work in the great property The
camp is ideal Water Is pumped over
the hill from Little Meadows for
household uses and the mine is sup
plying sufficient for mill purposes
The town is situated just over the
mountain from Little Meadows and
is only about two miles north of Oat
man Its mines were among the first
important discoveries in that section
and have been large producers of gold
and silver The veins are large and
the shoots are longer than those of
any mine in the district Geologists
who have made close examination of
the property are of the impression
that it is one of the longest lived gold
mines in the world The ore body ex
tends from the old glory hole on the
west to the Railroad claim on the east
approximately through four claim
lengths Great lenzes have been found
in this massive vein and these lenzes
should yield a large amount of gold
when properly developed
D R Muir who will take charge
of the mines under the new order of
things has been in this county many
years as the representative of the
parent company and has a world of
friends here Since the closing down
of the mines he has been looking af
ter the company affairs in the zinc
fields of Kansas Arkansas and Mis
souri but he has always wanted to
return to the mines at Goldroad He
made a success of the operation of
this property and we are sure that he
will again turn the trick Mohave
county welcomes Mr Muir and his
people to one of tne great camps of
the state

A PROCLAMATION i
Executive Department
State of Arizona
The foundation of democracy is an
enlightened citizenship Without it
popular government falls into the
hands of the demagogue or succumbs
to the selfish ambitions of autocracy
National education on a basis which
affords to each child equality of op
portunity in preparation for the dut
ies and responsibilities of life is of
such outstanding importance that we
can well afford to devote to the pro
motion and furtherance of the cause
of education that consideration which
is to be given through observance of
American Education Week
Of special importance to us as citi
zens of America are the problems of
illiteracy the proper Americanization
of our alien population and prepara
tion of our boys and girls for citizen
ship Statistics show that Arizona
has a very high proportion of adult
illiterates a fact explained by our
large Indian and alien population
Among the native boin American pop
ulation the problem of illiteracy is
much less acute yet its eradication
demands and should receive the atten
tion of all our citizens Americaniza
tion of those who have come to us
from foreign lands or those of foreign
extraction who have not been afford
ed the opportunity to fit themselves
for citizenship will do much to incul
cate the spirit of true patriotism and
will stimulate and quicken apprecia
tion of the necessity for insuring
equality of educational opportunity in
sofar as it may be possible
There can be no progress education
ally without appreciation by our peo
ple of the dignity of teaching as a
profession and the enlistment of
many of our brightest minds in the
work of fitting future generations for
their responsibilities If our educa
tional system is to succeed it must
be able to attract men and women
who although they should be fired by
the high ideal of service are worthy
of their hire If the disparity between
their reward and that which they can
obtain in the business world is too
great the primal law of
vation overbalances the idealism of
service and the citizenship of the fu
ture is left to those less able to pre
pare it for the battles of life
i In the light of these exiomatic
facts it is particularly fitting that
time and effort be devoted to the
serious study of educational problems
looking toward their solution in the
interest of our future citizenship
NOW THEREFORE I THOMAS
E CAMPBELL Governor of the
State of Arizona in compliance with
the request of the President of the
United States with which 1 heartily
concur do hereby set aside and des
ignate the week of December 3 to 9
1922 for special observance as Amer
ican Education Week And I do es
pecially urge our citizens during the
period named to give special and
thoughtful attention to the problems
of Americanization Illiteracy and
Equality of Educational Opportunity
to the end that there may be a re
vival of interest in our public schools
and a more general appreciation of
the valuable contribution which the
teacher makes to the welfare of the
Republic
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have
hereunto set my hand and caused the
