Am wIT fj(j East Las Vegas, New Mexico, Friday Evening,- July 1. 1892. No. 179. Vol. I. V CL0SIN9 EXSBCISES, The closing exercises of the East Las Vegas public school took place at tho Tamtne opera houso this morn ing. The assemblage of 'happy children was indeed a beautiful sight, and the large number present gave evidence of tho interest felt in our public school. In front of tho stage were banks of fragrant flowers, pot ted plants and evergreens, and sus pended above it was tho motto, in white upon green ground, "Not in a Year, but Years." Seated upon the stage were the members of the school board, Rev. Layton, Rev. Hoffman and Professor Doty. The exercises opened with music by Professor Miller's orchestra, which was pleasing as usual. Rev. Layton led in prayer, after which Professor Doty made a few introductory re marks. The entertainment was not only pleasing and entertaining, but instructive. It was certainly ap propriate in all its features, and a credit alike to teachers and pupils. The reading exercise by the 7th gra'de, conducted by Professor Doty, was excellent. The professor teaches his pi'pils to read, and not merely pronounce the words. The selections read were good and Bhowed that the pupils were not unmindful of the in struction given J.hcm. The phonic drill by the little folks, in charge of Miss M. O'Brien, was splendid. Miss O'Brien shows rare tact with the little ones, and her efforts in their behalf are not in vain. The lesson recited today shows that their time has been well spent. The "Lullaby," by eight little girls attired in robes of pink, canary and blue, was very sweet and graceful. This was heartily applauded. The number drill, by Mrs. Gar lick's pupils, was fine. The little ones worked so rapidly and accur ately that we could hardly follow. Especially noticeable were the ex amples made by the children from numbers given them by tho teacher, calling for tho fundamental rules of arithmetic. The recitation closed with a number song, well rendered. Mrs. Garlick is a teacher of ability and has won the esteem of pupils and patrons. The chorus was well sung and pleasing. Tho memory gems, given by pupils of the 6th grade, was an entertaining feature, and showed thorough train ing of the mind. The physiology recitation by Mrs, Bunker's class was a marvel of cor rectnecs and knowledge on the sub ject. Each pupil recited some short extract of information in physiology that they had received during the year. Your reporter has several times heard this same olass in the school room, and can only say it is the most interesting physiology class Iib has ever heard. Mrs. Bunker is a natural teacher.and worthy of com mendalion for her thorough work. Tho dear little children again sang a sweet little exercise song, ana re coived merited applause. The eeocraphy recitation by Miss Stone's room was a novel and strik ing feature, owing to its originality All the countries of the globe were renresented by the children in iuu national costume, each ono carrying tho products of tho country and.after tellinsr about tho country, exhibiting them. They closed the lesson with tho eeoeraphy sons. Miss Stone is a teacher of no little talent and her place is in the school room, where she finds a welcome and appreciation. The papers read by Arthur Thayer and Alfred Long were good and es pecially interesting. They will ap pear in the Fkkb Pukss in full to morrow. Arthur and Alfred both read clearly and were attentively li lened to. After a song by the entire school, Mr. Henry, president of the school board, made a few appropriate and encouraging remarks and tho audi ence was dismissed with a blessing by Rev. A. Hoffman. During tho exereisc?,Arthur Thay er, Louise Crispell and Orilla Flint presided at the piano, and Professor Miller's orchestra favored tho audi ence with selections. Professor Doty has endeared himself to his pupils, and his friends are legion. As prin. cipal of tho public school he has given entire satisfaction. Practical in his methods, and an interest in his pupils both in school and out of school, has won for him success. The professor's labors hero for the past year havo certainly shown a noble enthusiasm which has been felt bv all. Ho and his able assistants RAILROAD ITEMS. Tho trouble grew out of some bus iness dealings between Schmidt and Gallegos. Tho latter had some sheep on shares horn cimiut ana it is claimed sold them. Mr. Schmidt re plevied them, and the shooting oc curred over the suit. Mr.Schmidt came hero a poor man, but by hard work and steady atten tion to business built up a big busi ness and was considered one of the solid and wealthy men of the terri tory. He was universally liked by all who had dealings with him, and was a great benelactor to all the res idents of his part of the country, never failing to help any poor persons who were worthy of aid. Throuorh vour paper! would ask the honorable president and members of the school board, "Is this justice to tho teachers?" If for some reason any of our teachers should fail to be re-elected, they could not apply else where, as in other places the teachers havo already been elect ed for the coming year. In the Pkebs I have noticed men tion of tho national school o-.-le. bration October 12th, and under the circumstances our public school could not well take any steps in the matter. The exercises this morning were evi dence of the ability of the present teachers, and I would suggest that tho board meet soon and re elect them all, and select any additional teachers from home.
