at 850 per acre for the growth of
cranberries.
The S. F. Commercial News re
ports a sale of a few hundred cases of
new pack Columbia river salmon, of
choice brand at SL35 per dozen in
that city, to fill an order for Australia.
We challenge any one, says the
Jacksonville Sentinel, to show another
case where two young men were on
trial for the murder of their fathers
as will be the case here next June.
We are not proud of this achievement,
however.
The Seattle papers speak very
favorably of "Leo's Ideal Pleasure
Party," which is advertised to appear
here next Saturday. The box sheet
will be open at the New York Novelty
store at nine o'clock to-morrow morning.
The Standard comes down en
larged and improved, and containing
full telegraphic report. It has always
been a good local paper, and now
steps to the front rank in journalism.

ston, a peddler, was shot for his mon
ey near Colfax, W. T. last Tuesday.

Bozorth havo formed a copartnership
and intend going into business in this
city. From personal acquaintance
with both these young men we iiave
no hesitation in saying that they will
do what they say they will do. They
contemplate opening in about a
month.
The Commercial News of April
2Sth, says that some of its remarks
regarding canned goods have not
been "thoroughly approved." The
-Arei or any other paper will find it
very difficult to make any remarks
about canned goods this season that
will bo "thoroughly approved." The
best way is to make thorough search
after exact facts and then state them
ju8t as they exist
The corner stone for the first
Odd Fellows' Orphan's Home on the
Pacific slope, will be laid with appro
priate ceremonies at the Home Farm
near Fairview, on Monday, May 17th,
at which time and place the Odd Fel
lows of Portland, East Portland and
Oregon City will give a grand basket
picnic. All friend of the widows and
orphans are cordially invited to be
present and participate.
The new steam whalor lialacna
sailed yesterday morning for the
Arctic on her first voyage. She was
in command of Captain Bauldry, and
has aboard, all told, forty-three men.
The building, equipment and quick
departure of tho Balaam are con
sidered one of tho wonders of modern
shipbuilding. Her keel was laid in
Dickie Brothers' ship yard near Long
Bridge, on January 29th, and yester
day, only eighty days after, she sailed

The work of driving the piling
for the foundation of Kinney's brick
building on Squemoqua street, has be
gun. It will be 50x70, two stones
high, and will cost about $17,000. On
the other side of Genevieve street
work is progressing on Capt. Flavel's
new building, which will be also 50x70
feet. A building of the same dimen
sions will immediately be erected on
the southwest corner of Genevieve and
ouenamus street. Tnero are over I
fifty new buildings now in every stage
of completion in Astoria.
A good deal of land is being se
cured under the timber land act in
Oregon and Washington territory at
present; but tho "boom" doesn't
begin to compare with the waj' it is
done in northern California. The
Eureka, Cal., Times-Telephone for
April 23th has two hundred and
eighty-one notices of application.
Tho notices embraco patents to -4,-9G0
acres of land. It is a great deal
of land, and "a big thiug' for tho
newspaper that publishes the notices.
There has recently been issued
from tho headquarters of tho military
division of the Pacific a list of the
deserters from the regiments serving
there for the threo months preceding
Jan. 1, 1832. This list shown that
there wero, during this time, fourteen
desertions from the First Cavalry,
thirty-ene from the Third Cavalry,
twenty-four from the Sixth Cavalry,
fifteen from tho First Artillery,
twenty-one from the First Infantry,
elevan from tho Second Infantry, ten
from the Eighth Infantry, and three
from the Twenty-first Infantry.

The California Conner and Grocer,
of recent date, says: ''Affairs on the
Sacramento river are in a fearful state;
packers are paying seventy cents for
raw fish, and are losing money. The
run so far is very light, and the pack
is not more thau one third as large as
is usual at this time. At this point
business is very unsatisfactory and
prices are nominal."
Tho Liverpool correspondent of the
London Grocer says: "Now that
warm weather has supervened there
has been an active consumptive de
mand for salmon, and although no
operations of moment havo transpired
with regard to Columbia river, some
good parcels of Fraser river have
changed hands at satisfactory prices.
Should the weather continue under
the present favorable conditions, no
doubt dealers will see their way to
improve their bids, and so lead to con
siderable business."
The Grocers'1 Gazette Liverpool cor
respondent says: "The demand for
Columbia river packing is at present
very slow, but prices are well sus
tained and thore is no reason to an
ticipate any weakness, the whole be
ing well and firmly held."
