The grave dust of twenty years had lain on Charlie's golden hair, but the mother had never forgotten him! Tho old man patted her cold hands, hands that labored so hard that they were seamed and wrinkled and calloused with years of toil, and the wedding ring was worn to a mere thread of gold and then he pressed his lips to them, and cried, they had encouraged and strength ened him in every trial of life. The Mistletoe Bengh ia New York During tho past few years an attempt has been annually made to introduce the mistletoe into" private houses in New York at Christmas, but, hitherto, with out much success. It has to travel two far before reaching its destination, and has lost all its freshness and beanty. Not that the mistletoe is, in itself, a pe culiarly attractive plant Its chief charm is that it is supposed to confer upon young people the privilege of kiss ing each other under it; but, as a flow-er-doaler of great experience, socially and from a horticultural point of view, said to the reporter who questioned him about his trade in tho mystic bough, when a young fellow plucks up cour age to kiss his sweetheart he don't care for the mistlettMi to be hanging over his head; ho' II do it anywhere. The mistletoe has never been popu lar in Now Yoi k. partly because it seU dom arrives iu good condition, but chiefly on account of a subtle danger that lurks beneath its leaves. Tins peril was well illustrated by Punch some years ago. The caricature showed an ofllecr of the guards, handsome, young, and languid, who had thoughtlessly strolled uuder a mistletoe bough, antl found sitting there a lady of doubtful age and angular proportions, waiting for something. The inscription was: "England expects every man to do his duty!" The mistlotoe iu England is tolerably plentiful. It grows, ebielly, on oaks, and is still hcla in high estoom. In this country it is scarce, and of the little that is usod in New York, nearly as much is imported from Europe as comos from the west. A 'ew York Sun. Forbidden Ground. And she swept grandly out of the room, w hile the youug man went and laid his astonish ed bead against the frostv windnwpane.
