PECCARY VS. LOCOMOTIVE. Wow a rack of the Obittluate Little ltrutes Cauie to l.rlrf. A Fort Davis (Tex.) correspondent of the N. Y. Times writes: The follow ing story, which lias now becomo a jart of tho unwritteu history of this section, will Iwst servo to illustrate the headstrong disposition ami wonderful courage of tho little peccary. The Southern Pacific Kaihoad, which passes this point for a part of its route, cuts through a long stretch of chaparral country Abounding with peccaries, wild, mustangs, and various wild ani mals. One daj while driving along ut moderate speed through the recos " bottoms, an engineer saw a herd of t mall animals scattered along tho track a few hundred yards ahead. Uclievin them to bo domestic porkers, ho blew the whistle a couple of blasts and kept that the brutes would take tho hint and get out of tho way. No such thing. Hith snouts m the air they scornfully surveyed the approaching engine aim made up their minds to fitand their around. Onicklv forming a sernl-circle en masse, with angry eyes and gnashing teeth they coolly awaited the crash, evidently determined to demolish the locomotive and cars or get 'busted" themselves, so to f peak. Still the engineer thought they would move and made no attempt to ease up or stop the train, When al most upon them he saw that a collision was inevitable, and so he opened the throttle, set tho old whistle to screech ing, and bore down upon the band with all the speed he could command. Crash! he went through the band of peccaries like a rocket, filling the air with spare ribs, tenderloins, and bits of flying pork. Thoso belligerent lit tle rascals who were unhurt rushed madly at the wheels, the cars, and the cow-catcher, showing their spitefulness to the bitter end, but, of course, they were smashed out of existence in their attempt to do nothing. The engineer says: 'Next day when I came back over tho road thero were the remaining peccaries on the same spot, arranged in battalion front, and all waiting for the train to come along so that they could get even for the previous day's disaster. Away I went at them again, tilling the atmosphere with pork, while the live ones frantical ly rushed at the cars, wheels, and trucks, attempting in their mad fury to wreck tho train. This they kept up trip after trip until only three pec caries remained. True' to their reso lution, when the final day came they topk a bold stand side by side in the middle of the track and prepared to make a last fight for tho honor of pec caries and hogs generally. Two were tossed into eternity by the cowcatcher and the third was cut into sections by the iron wheels. Since then no moro peccaries have attempted to buck iigainet Uncle Sam's mail." A Xeglected Branch. We are taught in school to read and write but how many of us are ever taught how to talk? And if we wished to learn where should we seek a suitable teacherP And yet among all the accomplishments which men and women possess there is not one that can give so much pleasure as an ability to talk pleasantly and entertainingly. Think how many things go to make up good talk a good voice, well disci plined, "soft and low," one that rests rather than tires, a voice with music In it. Next, a well stored mind. Next, possession of the art of putting things, for it is quite as important that you say a tiling right as that 3011 Kay the right thing. Then to com municate information in such a way as to make it appear that you assume no Mipcriority. Wendell Phillips, who was perhaps as delightful and charm ing a conversationalist as Uoston ever had, would always put it: "You re member that Socrates said " It was u harmless lictiou and a pleasant one. Boston Budget. DOWN ON THE BABOON. It Has Heroine Sadly Demoralized with the Advance of Civilisation. The baboon, writes theGraaff-Reinet Advertiser, a south African paper, ncems to be changing climatic condi tions. In former years he was a vege tarian, his worst offense being stealing mealies in the gardens when he got the chance. Now he has taken to other ways of getting a livelihood. Some say he has joined the carnivora. Any way it is certain that he makes it a food business to get hold of lambs, tear them open, and drink their mothers1 milk in their stomachs. Said a farmer the other day to a brother farmer: Have you lots of honey on your farm?" "No: the baboons rob all the nests." 'How do they do it? The bees would sting them" to deathP" The answer was that probably the baboons did the work in tho night, when the bees were drowsy, slcepy.and dull. Anyway he believed the baboons got off with the swag of honey when ever thev could get at a nest. Then Peter Boovsen of Moontontcin has his story to tcfl of the new devel opment of the baboon: It attacks the wild aloe, pulls it down, and tears out tho pith for food. Mr. Booysen. Sr., docs not obiect to this, as he would be glad if all the wild aloes on his farm were cleared out by any means whatso ever. The special wish of father and xon is that baboons would take some food-providing operations which would get rid of the prickly pear. But as the substance of tho leaf and of the trunk of the prickly pear is nothing but water the wish is not likely to bo grat ified. Anyway tho poisoning clubs have classed the baboon with the wild carnivora, and the rille and arsenic are now busy destroying them. Farmers give interesting instances of the difficulty of poisoning the baboon, the fellow being about as "slick" as a human being. One farmer believes tho fellow tastes the poison as prepared and disguised for him, and if he finds it is not a good thing for tho stomach npits it out. That farmer, however, has succeeded in giving the arsenic such palatable surroundings that the shrewdness of the baboon Is not proof against the palatable temptation, and he dies.
