Tfte Times, OWOSSO. FRIDAY. AUGUST 12. 1892. E. O. DEWEY, Editor. Canada TMstles. REPUBLICAN TICKET. FOB PRESIDENT, UENJAMIN IIARRISON. of Indiana. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, WIUTELAW REID, of New York. STATE. For Governor, John T. Rich, of Lapeer Co. For Lieutenant Governor, Wight Giddings, of Wexford Co. For Secretary of State, John W. Jochim, of Marquette Co. For Treasurer, Joseph F. Hamwtzer, of Houghton Co. For Auditor-General, . Stanley W. Turner, of Roscommon Co. For Attorney General, Gerritt J. Diekema, of Ottawa Co. For Commission of the State Land Office, John G. Berry, of Otsego Co. For Supt of Tubllc Instruction, H. R. Tattengill, of Ingham Co. For Member of Board of Education, E. A. Wilson, of VanBuren Co. CONGRESSIONAL. For Representative in Congress, 8th District, Wiixiam 8. Linton, of Saginaw. Grover Cleveland vetoed 556 soldiers' pen sions, including the dependent pension bill. Republicans the country over are rejoicing at the renomlnatlon of ex-Speaker Reed for congress. The need of the time is for more just such men. Some of the local democrats are a bit worried for fear the peoples party will re fuse to nominate any candidates who will accept a nomination or endorsement from them. Another democratic gerrymander has been turned down. The New York Su preme court on Saturday declared the law passed by the last legislature to be uncon stitutional. According to the established precedent Shiawassee county will be entitled to .the nominee for State Senator in this district this year. The republicans have several good men for the place. Will Gov. Winans insist upon Dan Soper paying to the state the balance of 81,172.50 due from him. Soper intimates that he Is willing bo to do when Winans and Auditor Stone pay the amount they owe for manuals. The extra session of the legislature cost the people of the state $5,218.50. Squaw- buck partisanship comes high. No mention of this will be made in the boiler plate "economy" articles furnished for the demo cratic press. The republicans of the county should now turn their attention to organizing campaign clubs in every township, city and village. The.v can and ouirht to give Pres. Harrison a lanrer maioritv than in 1888. This can be accomplished by being well organized. Solon Stone, jr., on Monday at the Shia wassee township republican caucus, with drew his name from the race for the noml nation of sheriff. The delegates elected were solidly for Mr. Colby and will vote for him on motion of Mr. Stone. The course of the latter is to be commended. Shiawassee county republicans will not have on opportunity to vote for Geo. A Steele, of St. Johns, for state senator. The new apportionment puts Clinton and Gratiot Notice to Pathmasters. The law to prevent the spread of Canada thistles is a stringent one, as will be seen by reading its provisions, which are given below. Section 1. The People of the Stat of Michigan enact, That it shall be the duty of every owner, possessor or occupier of land, to cut, or cause to be cut down, all the Canada thistles growing thereon, or on the Highway passing by or through the same, so often in each and every year as shall be sufficient to prevent them going to seed; and if any owner, possessor or occupier of land shall, knowingly, suffer any such Canada thistles to grow thereon, and the seed to ripen, so as to cause or endanger the spread lng thereof, he shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine of ten dollars for every such offense. Sec. 2. It shall be the duty of the over seer of highways in any township to see that the provisions of this act shall be car rled out in their respective highway districts and they shall give notice to the owner, pos essor or occupier of any land within said district whereon Canada thistles shall be growing and In danger of going to seed, requiring him to cause the same to be cut down within five days from the service of such notice, and in case such owner, pos sessor or occupier shall refuse or neglect to cut down the said Canada thistles, the over seer of highways shall enter upon the land and cause all such Canada thistles to be cut down with as little damage to growing crops as may be, and shall not be liable to be sued in any action of trespass therefor: Provided that when Canada thistles are growing upon non-resident lands it shall not be necessary to give notice before proceeding to cut down the same. Sec. 5. Any person who shall knowingly vend any grass or other seed, among wnicn there is any seed of the Canada thistle, shall for every such offense, upon conviction, be liable to a fine of twenty dollars. Sec. 6. It shall be the duty of the prose cuting attorney of the county to prosecute all violations of the provisions of this act which shall come to his knowledge. Sec. 7. Every overseer of highways who shall refuse or neglect to discharge the duties imposed on him by the provision of this act shall be liable to a fine of twenty five dollars: Provided that the provisions of this act shall be published in pamphlet form, and ten copies thereof forwarded to the supervisor of each township in this state. It seems strange that any farmer would allow these pests to spread over his fields, and it certainly does not show a very neigh borly spirit to refuse to cut them down be fore they seed the fields of others who object to the pest If any further information Is desired, call upon the prosecuting attorney. Mr. Draper had not been well for several months and a few weeks ago went abroad in the hope that he might be benefitted; the change however did him no good, and real lzing that death must soon come he started home, dying on shipboard. He had been prominent for years In State affairs, hold lng the office of regent at the time of his death. GLYNN MONROE Mm 116 WASHINGTON STREET, OWOSSO, - - - MICH. The democrats were compelled to pass a fair apportionment bill, a lack of one vote in the Senate to pass a partisan meas ure compelling them so to do. The demo cratic bosses were badly cut up at the out come, all hopes of electing a U. S. senator now being gone. The republicans will cer tainly have a majority of 25 on a Joint bal lot In the next legislature. By this bill Shi awassee and Ingham counties form the fourteenth senatorial district. The county wjll have but one representative. But oue name will probably be presented Till HlOfk Guaranteed. fit tVia r0niik11an nunv nnnvonMAM a,ia.. I 121 Mich.
