A riot was narrowly averted yesterday in and nbout the church yard of St. Stanislaus Polish Roman Catholic church. Tho church had been c1oshI for some time against its pastor, Father Matkowskl, against whom the con gregation had rebelled, chiefly on account of his deposition of Father Torskl, assist ant pastor. Bishop Illchter, of Grand Ilapida, with Father Matkowskl, arrived In the city nnd gained entrance to the prlc&t house. When they essayed to enter the church, however, a crowd of 1,000 had gathered. Tho leaders declared determi nation to keep Father Matkowskl out, al though no objection was made to the bishop. Finally the bishop and priest retreated to tho pnrsonago nnd sent for tho sheriff and polico officers. They were advlsied not to promote tho strife by trying to enter forcibly against tho crowd, and followed this advice. During tho excitement a woman struck out with her parasol and the blow fell by accident, it is said, upon the bishop and tho priest. The anti-Mat-kowskl Poles have tho church premises guarded.
