In taking out an agency for an insurance company recently, one of the preliminary questions wns to give the number of churches in Elgin. At tkst thought we wondered what that had to do with insur- ance risks, unci ns we studied it more and more we came to this conclusion. No insurance company wishes to take a risk on buildings in a town where the people are so lawless and wicked ns not to support any church. The more I cnurchos in a town the safer the I lnsurance company feels on the risus it taKes. There was no question asking 1 about the number of stores or! residences ns thnt hnd nothing to do with the class of risks hut tho number of churches a town supports does have something to do with it. Anil yet some people will be rate the work of the clinches, curse the ministers for trying to drive out sm, and always gut up something to detract attention when a revival meeting is in pro. i I ,H.....w.x:..:..;:.....x...Mj...,..j... , 5! There are lecturers traveling about over the land to instruct and amuse the public and the price charged to hear them is nearly always 50 cents. The writer has attended a number of lecture courses where such noted personages as Sam Jones, Henry Watterson, ElW-t Hubbard, William J. Bryan.' Clarence Darrow and others were speakers, (yes we have heard all of these men) and the price was always 50 cents. And we have heard ITsennons preached by Evangelist Cole, who will soon come to Elfjin, anil any of the 17 was better than some of the lectures that cost 50 i cents. Don't Miss Any. Hung In Effigy. At the age of SI John P. St. Jrhn is still speaking for prohi- bition. He has been hung in ef- ugy more man u nunnred times. The writer was once hung in effigy for denouncing evil and at the time hardly knew whether ti take it as a compliment or an insult, but as the man St. John has been hung in effigy more than a hundred times we just be- gin to realize what a compliment we received.
