On June It), 18G3, President Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation which freed all negroes in the United States from the bon'dsjof slavery. Last Friday was the 51st anni versary of this occasion and in honor of the day many of the Lawton negroes held a picnic and celebration near Ft Sill. The Champion is authorized ( to announce tho name of County Judge H. N. Whalin as a candl i date for re-nominatlon to that office, subject to the democratic primary on Aug. 4. Judtre Whalin is serving hit first term as county judge, beinf in office about 18 months, ant it is the almost unanimous tr diet of the people that he hat made good in the office, No judge can please all the people, as very fewpersons who have, to be sentenced for crime have very friendly feeling for thd judge who has to Sentence them. But the judge has conducted the busines of the office Without fear or favor of either membert of the bar or of persona brought before him, and in a way thaf has saved thousands of dojlari to the tax payers of this county. Previous to his taking charge of the office there was a monthly pay-roil for court, clerks, and other employes of the office a mounting to $550, and he his been conducting the office otl half that amount, a saving to the county of over $3,000 per year. Another saving has been in the summoning of jurors, the old method of sending the sheriff out costing an average of about $5 per juror. He has had all jurors summoned by mail, which has saved the county around $1000 since he went into office. When he took charge of the office there were about 120 civl cases and GO criminal cases on file. And during his term over 100 civil and about 150 criminal cases have been filed, not many of these being left as he has set tled or disposed of about 375 cases. He has also given special at tention to cleaning up the pro bate court records, nmnjref 'theet being estates that had been left unBnttled for several years. And he has also taken great care in looking after the interests of minor and orphan children. He is a man of strict integrity, broad minded, and takes the sense of justice into considera tion in all matters brought be fore him, Take A Look At our prices on Furniture.
