WEDNESDAY, JVLY B, 11. OREGON WEATHER Fair; gentle northwesterly winds, 4 John Butler, chief ot police ot Los Angeles, has an idea all his own of how to rid the United States' of Reds and I. W. W. agitators. - He would have the federal government organ- - lib a federal police force large enough to make investigations and prosecute on a wholesale scale all unpatriotic and disloyal moves of those who imagine the United States hould be "made over." Such a po lice force not to be used in connec tion with any political movement nor tiave anything whatever to do with bor disturbances, its work to con sist solely ot ridding the country of disloyal specimens of humanity. Does ot sound like a bad idea anything to get rid 'of the Reds aid other agistors. Governor Thomas tilggs, Jr., de clared in a message to the last Alas ka territorial legislature here. The governor's message advocated the consideration of the establish ment ot a territorially owned passen ger and freight steamship line to compete with the privately owned lines which operate from Seattle. A line owned by the territory could operate for lower rates, the governor argued. I realize that I am advocating a most radical and startling departure from accepted standards." the gov ernor's message said. "The first impulse is to characterize the scheme as impracticable. It Is not Imprac ticable; it is distinctly practicable and will allow the terrttory to take on renewed life. ''Every other question sinks to ineignificance, for back of it all re mains the basic fact that unless re lief is afforded us in our most vital need, monies expended on roads, schools, charities and all other con structive projects constitute merely stop-gap measure, never to bear fruit." Ocean lanes, it was pointed out. are the only routes Alaska has to the outside world and if the lanes are blocked by high prohibitive rates Alaska will not prosper. I Why not more ahoep and goalaT The princliml reason Is the coyote. Josephine county should today have 10 of these animals where she has only one, and thin Is putting It very mild too. It goes without argument that this class of livestock will thrive on our hills and waste places with less care and shelter than any other stock ex cept for the lose from the coyote. Concerted action on the part o the farmers will reduce this loss to a minimum. The loss from the coyote Is not confined to sheep and goats, but goes on to poultry ami pigs, and in this county runs Into thousands ot dollars annually. A poisoning cam paign is to be put on beginning July 15th and continue tor one week, and every one Is expected to cooperate in this campaign. Keep your sheep, goats, pigs and poultry where the coyote can not gtt them. Keep your dogs and eats shut up so they can not get the bait. Not only for the sake of the dors and cats, but so as to leave the belts for the coyotes. Are we going to give up to this pert and allow It to put us out of business? The fruit grower has his grlev- encea to contend with. lie mnaf fU'ht pent g all the time. Turkey raising was becoming an Important Industry in the county. and was flourishing until the coyote got so bad. One farmer lost ii tur keys in one night from coyotes. Give this campaign a careful con siderate cooperation. C. D. Thompson, county agent.
