Campbell Cltr Buiiaeii Directory.
This woik U well received by ita patrons io this
and other citi.s and towns, for which the author
respectfully tenders bis thauks.
There is still an ample supp'y of copies at this
office which ought to be disposed of readily. We
hope our enterprising citizens will not permit Mr.
C. to lose money by a publication so eesential to
our city and State. Mr Campbell has been liber
al in the gratuitous distribution of copies on our
Steamboats, Railroads, and other public offices,
We "bear him witness that be has done his best to
make both the Directory and its circulation satis
factory. This work is a credit to our city aud State,
at home or abroad. Let no one decline to take a
copy.
A Stamp Tax is California. The Legislature
of California laid a stamp tax ot 20 cents on the
$100 on bills of exchange drawn in the State aud
payable out of it. This is one-fifth of one per
cent., and must appreciate the rate of exchange;
it will, however, probably induce the shipment of
some gold which otherwise would have been re
milted in bills. This liw went into tffect on the
1st of July.
2!P The Ri'-hmond American gives the follow
ing recipe for Blackberry Wine : Measure your
berries and bruise them; to every gallon adJiog one
quart of boiling water. Let the mixture stand
twenty-four hours, stirring occasionally; then strain
off th-j liquor into a cask; in every gallon adding
two pounds of sugar, cork tight and let it stand
till October and you will have wine ready for use,
without further boiling or straining, that will make
lips smack as they never smacked under similar in
fluence before.
Cultivating a Railroad. The Auburn (N. T.)
American says that "miles and scores of miles
within the fenced track of the Central Railroad are
planted with potatoes by the employees of that
great road." These "railroad farms" are attended
to mostly by the wives of the employees.
3?" Saxe, the well-known poet, and editor of
the Burlington Sentinel, addresses the following to
an offended subscriber:
A (routy pat 'on of the Sentinel
Politely bids us "send the thing to hell:"
A time y hint. Tin proper we confess.
With change i f resilience to change th address;
It sh li he sent, if Charon', mail will let it,
Where the subscriber will be sure to jet it.
Thx Capitol Dome. The Washington States
contradicts the rumor that the walls of the rotunda
of the new C.ipitol bad been found insufficient to
Support the Dew dome, and states upon the best
authority, that there is no truth whatever in the
rumor. It has the authority of Mr. Walter, the
architect, for saying that no change has taken place
jn his own judgment, nor in that of Capt. Meigs',
in re'ation to tnis subject, and that r.o practical de
monstration has been rrade from which any new
conclusions are warranted. It also states that the
weiglit of the new dome will be less than thatf
the old one.

A young man, who was desirous of marrying a
daughter of a well-known Boston merchant, alter
many attempts to broach the subject to the old gen
tleman, iu a very stuttering manner said: "Mr.
Q ,are you willing to le-le-let me have your
daughter Janer" "Of course I am," gruffly and
quickly replied the old man ; "and I wih you could
get some other likely follows to marry the rest of
Ihera."
'My love," said Mrs. Footle to her husbmd, "ob
lige, me with a five pound note to-day, to purchase
a ni-w dree."
"Shan't do any u"h thing, Agnes you called
me a bear yertierday."
"Lor, love, that was uothing I meant by it that
you wer fond of hugging." '
"You little . I bavo no fire, but here's a

The author of the following lines is said to be a
dlftanl relative of Alexander Smith, the poet. His
name is probably John. He is in a fair way to be
come as celebrate! as Alexander:
Abigail Brown,
With a bran new gown.
Went down to see her sister,
Wnen Jonathan Lee,
As brik as a flea,
Jumped right up and kissed her.
M
I'otato Bur,
Valuable Di-covert. Mr. Thomas IT. Woods,
of tins county, informs us that the potato bu
hiving made its appt-araoce among his potatoes, he
tried several remedies, but of no avail. At last he
mace a strune soHp-uds, by mixing about one and
a ball pounds of soap to a few gallons of water,
and a quantity of soot. The whole being mixed
into a waeh, he poured it on to the plants so an to
cause it to run ilown the stems. The result was,
that the bugi were killed instantly, while those teat
scan pered off aid rot return. This is certainly a
cheap, valuable and efficient remedy, and one that
ought to be published iu every paper. M'iricheiter
