a lot of distracted mothers aro
probnbly wondering how thoy
will nmuso tho littlo ones. A 50
ft. resldonco lot, barren of trees,
is a poor plny-ground for an ac
tive, restless child, and parents
should exert themselves to pro
vide suitablo occupation and
amusomont for tho littlo ones to
koop thorn off tho streets.
"Wouldn't it bo a good idea to
fix up a corner of tho city park
with swings, a miniature merry-go-round,
and other things which
delight tho hearts of tho littlo
ones? Tho city park usually
means a resting placo, whero ono
can get away from tho heat and
worry of tho city, for a littlo
"breathing spell," but tho child
ren do not requiro a resting place.
Their natural restlossness and ac
tivity demand a placo of amuse
ment, and what is hotter suited
for-this than a cool, shady corner
of tho public park? Wo aro very
fortunate in having a natural
park so near tr-3 city, and by all
means let it bo mado a sourco of
pleasuro to our citizens. Tho
older persons will take great
delight in spending thoir Sunday
afternoons in tho park if it is well
cared for, and surely, during tho
week, it would bo hotter to havo
tho children playing in the cool,
shady park, learning-many uso
ful lessons from nature, than
loitering on tho street corners,
learning all kinds of evil and
very . littlo. ood. Every citizen
of Anadarko should lako a spec
ial prido in tho park, and, if a
pavillion and other improvements
could bo arranged, it would add
greatly to tho natural beauties of
this pleasant spot.
A Welcome Rain.
The sound of tho heavy down
pour of rain early this morning
va3 as full of music to tho oars
of Oklahomans, as tho clink of
gold is to tho car of tho miser. In
fact, there is not much difference
in tho roal meaning of tho sound,
for both sounds mean wealth.
Tho ruin signifies corn, cotton,
tablos, fat stock, and everything
which tends to increase tho
wealth of tho fannor,theroforo all
othor classes will bo equally bene
fitted. Sometimes tho heat and
dust becomo disagreeable, and wo
grow impatient for rain boforo tho
crops aro really suffering, but
tho rain never fails to arrive in
duo timo to insure a fairly good
ovon in tho most unfavor
able season, and usually tho crops
aro abundant. Oklahoma is daily
growing in favor with prospec
tive investors, especially with
those who desiro a homo, and
each succeeding year ably de
monstrates tho fact that Oklaho
ma real estato increases in valuo
moro rapidly than any othor part
of tho country. Especially is this

.Queer Food Plonts.
In tho Deparlmont of Agri
culture, at "Washington, hidden
away in an obscuro cornor, is an
odd sort of exhibit of queer foods
eaten by out of tho way people.
There is a loaf of bread mado
from the roasted leaves of a plant
allied to tho century plant.
Another kind of bread is from
a dough of juniper berries.
These are relished by some tribes
of Indians, while others manu
facture cakes out of different
kinds of bulbs.
Tho pairie Indians relish a dish
of wild turnips, which civilized
people would not bo likely to en
joy at all. In th Great Ameri
can Desert tho b' n beans, which
grow on mesquito bushes, aro
utilized for food. Soap berries
furnish an agreeable diet fbr
some savngos in this country,
while in Caltfornia tho copper
colored aborigines do not dis
dain tho seeds nf salt grass.
Also in California tho Digger
Indians collect pino nuts, which
aro tho seeds called pinonesfi, by
kindling fires against tho troos,
thus causing tho nuts to fall out
of tho cones. At tho samo timo
a sweet gum exudes from tho bark,
serving the purposo of sugar.
Tho seeds of gourds are con
sumed in tho shape of mush by
Indians in Arizona. In addition
to all theso things tho oxhibit re
ferred to includes n jar of pul
vorized crickets, whioh aro eat
on in that form by tho Indians of
Oregon. Thoy aro roasted, as
arograsshoppors, and ovon slugs.
Theso delicacies aro cooked in a
pit, being arranged in alternato
layors with hot stones. After
boing thus propared, thoy aro
dried and ground to powder.
Thoy nro mixed with poundod
acorns or berries, tho flour mado
in this way boing kneaded into
cakes and dried in tho sun. Ex.
