LECTURE ON MORMONISM By Rev. John Sweet in the First M. E. Church Last Sunday Evening. Last Sunday evening, at the First Meth odist Episcopal church, Pastor Sweet de livered the second of two lectures on Mormonism. The spacious auditorium was packed with a most attentive and enthu siastic audience and the points made by the speaker were cheered by hand clapping. It appears that certain Mormon missionaries have beeu in town for some time distribut ing literature. One of the pauiphjets strayed into the hands of Mr. Sweet and on examining it he learned that an effort was being made to deceive the people as to what Mormonism is. He then announced that on the following Sunday morning he would show up Mormonism with the mask off. A large congregation was in attend ance and Mr. Sweet read the articles of faith as -ft forth in the pamphlet and in terpreted them by the doctrinal teaching of the Mormon priesthood. The Moraiou missionaries were present by invitation awd were not well pleased at the exposure of the true inwardness of their church and teaching. Mr. Sweet offered them the opportunity of presenting in writing any denials of his statements, and on Sunday evening last he read their demurrer and made a further exposure of the doctrinal and practical abominations of this remaining "twin relic of barbarism." Beyond all question, Mr. Sweet established the following facts as to Mormon I teaching: Mormonism is polytheistic, believing in many gods. The gods are all exalted men, having flesh and bones and limited by material laws as we are. Adam is our God and the only God we have anything to do with. Moimons only will be saved; every body else will be damned. This if affirmed n the most emphatic manner by Brigham Young, P. P. Pratt and many others. The Mormon church is the only true and living church on the face of the whole earth; all others aru spurious. The Mormon priest hood have the right to rule in all things, temporal and spiritual, and it is the only legitimate rule on the planet. It Is a dreadful thing to tight against or in any manner to oppose the priesthood. The book of Mormon is better than the Bible and the teachings of the church by the priesthood has more authority . than the Bible. The Mormon church is yet to seize the reins of the government in the United States and afterward to seize this whole continent. Bishop Lunt said, "This Is our present temporal aim." Mormon gods are polygamists. Thev have lots of wives. Adam came to Eden with a celestial body and brought one of his wives with him. Jesus was married to three women and had natural offspring as the fruit of such union. As we are to strive to become gods ourselves men ought to take as many wives as they can care for and aim at a numerous progeny. If a man leaves the Mormon church It would be a good thlng'to kill him. Brigham Young said In a seimon preached in the Mormon tabernacle: "I have known a great many men who have left this church for whom there Is no chance whatever for exaltation, but if their blood had been spilled it would have lcen better for them. The wickedness and ignorance of the nations forbid this principle being In full force, but the time will come when the will of God will be in full force. This Is loving our neighbor as ourselves; If he needs help, help him; If he wants sal vation and It Is necessary to spill his blood on the earth, In order that he may be saved, spill It. That is the way to love mankind." Nothing of the foregoing vile, arrogant, Intolerant, blasphemous, sensuous and tirst-enable teaching appears In the decoy literature now being circulated by the political Mormon missionaries in tbis city; tne eleven hnof is concealed, only the sugar coatititr ot M.i- nauseous pill Is being offered but tl at this constitutes the body of the Mnimon syMtm was mom ihtm proved by the evidence ot leading Moimon authorities quoted by Mr. fc'Wtet. Eveiy denial made in tbe protest of the Mot mors was com pletely set aside, particularly on the sub ject of polyg'imy. Since Pieident Wood ruff lstutd In- prudential suKpeetioE that plural mairiaees be foi the time being avoid (I an itfoit but I uade to induce tbe belief that the church has repudiated polygamy. Mr. Smi i t explained that only :le tubiic marriage cenmuny was meant and that the pnlygamiMic relation has not only not beeu condemned but has most tmphatically bten rffirmed and vindicated by the dignitaries of Mormonism iu very recent declarations. lndetd the mission aries now in this city have done so within a few day s. Mr. Sweet called a lady to her feet who testified that these men had argued with her in her owu home in support of polygamy and had used tre Bible to induce convictious. Our citizens ought to b - on guard against these deceivers of the people aud resent their efforts at making prosylltes lor this beastly conglomeration of supersti tion, tyranuy, disloyalty nnd Hastiness.
