*Oo "••../ Jgf VOL. XXXIV. No. 5. KENT and SEATTLE WASH., SEPTEMBER 1, 1913. 50c Per Year; 5c the Copy THE accompanying pictures are of^the two silver cups offered by the Oregon- Washington Railroad &. Navigation Company to the King County Fair to be held at Seattle, September 8-13. The cup pictured on the left is to be given for the best collection of forage plants and the one on the right for the best collection of matured corn. The offering of these cups at this fair is in line with the policy of the O-W. R. & N. to encourage the raising of corn and also of hogs throughout the state and Northwest. Officials of the road believe that this state should become one of the greatest corn producing districts in the country. To help bring this about the company proposes holding a corn show at Colfax this fall or winter. It is a pleasure indeed to know that the big railroads entering Seattle are alive to the benefits of county fair agricultural exhibits and are assisting the farmers in every way possible. In addition to these cups given by the O-W. R. & N. railway, the Northern Pacific is giving a beautiful silver pitcher for the best dairy cow, any breed, exhibited at the fair. The Great Northern is also giving a beautiful silver cup for the largest and best 36 potatoes exhibited at the fair. With these beautiful cups given by the railways and more than a dozen given by the fair management, there ought to be a fine contest among King county farmers at the coming fair which begins Sept. 8, and lasts a week.
