ALLEGED "CHOLERA CURES"
WASHINGTON, D. C, June 10.-
Evidence of what appears to be a well
organized campaign to delude farmers
throughout the country into buying
an alleged cure for hog cholera, under
the impression that this has been in
vestigated and approved by the United
States Government, has reached the
, Department of Agriculture. Articles
praising this medicine, Benetol by
name, are being sent out widespread
to newspapers. These articles are so

worded that it appears as if the De
partment of Agriculture, had received
reports from the state of Minnesota
showing that the medicine had proved
most beneficial. As a matter of fact
the one report received by the de
partment was an unofficial and un
solicited statement sent presumably
from the promoters themselves. The
department attaches no importance
whatsoever to this statement. It has
no reason to believe in the efficiency
of any proprietary cure for hog
cholera and does not recommend any.
Under certain conditions it urges
farmers to protect their stock with
anti-hog-cholera serum but that is ail.
In connection with this attempt it
may be said that the medicine, which
is now put forward as good for hogs,
was advertised some time ago as a
means of killing tuberculosis, ty
phoid and cancer germs, according
to an at tide published in the Journal
of the American Medical Association.
At thst time it was asserted that the
army was interested in it. As a mat
ter of fact the army was no more in
terested than the Department of
Agriculture is now.
In view of the evidence that the at
tempt to create this false impression
is persisttnt and widespread, all hog
ownei'3 are warned to communicate
with the United States authorities
before accepting as true any state
ment that the government recom
mends any tieatment-othtr than ihe
serum already mentioned.
WCRMS IN HOGS
"J. J. P., Kirkland, Wash., says:
"My pigs are passing worms and are
not growing as they should. Can you
give me a remedy?"
Answerf^Worms in bogs" are .one
oFtheir most~common ailments and
as soon as noticed that they are pass
ing these, they should be attended to
at once as they will make slow
growth, if any, while afflicted. The
following drench is given as one of
the best cures: For each hundred
pounds of weight, if a hog is under
100 pounds reduce the amount in
proportion, if the weight is more
than 100 pounds increase it in pro
portion. Let them go without food
for 24 hours and then give them the
following drench: "For each 100
pounds of weight use four tablespoons
of oil of turpentine, one-half teaspoon
of liquor ferri dialsatus and six
ounces of raw linseed oil." This
should bring away the worms and the
animals should begin to improve.
If they do not in four days give them
the same dose again.

The latest government report on
agricultural conditions is very flat
tering and especially so to winter
wheat growers. It places the prob
able output of the winter wheat at
030,000,000 bushels which is over 100,
--000,000 bushels more than the crop
last year. As the winter wheat har
vest will begin next month and there
has been no untoward condition
since the report was made, it looks as
though the nation was going to har
vest the biggest winter wheat crop in
its history. There are 1,119,000 acres
of winter wheat to be harvested this
year.
