BELLOWS FALLS BUDGET. Thr Vouiiic itirii'n Imllluir A Itr mnl luililr 4oil Mho,, Iny. of ihr Worli nf liiiat Winter. As the simson of arranging for tlio even ing of the coining winter npproneliea, the nmtter of tlie work for our young men is again ngitated. With tlie exception of a few who were nctlvely engaged in the work of the young men's institute, not many appreciate the extent of the work ilono last year, or tho gooil results that MouM seem to any close observer to have follow eil tho efforts then put forth, for a number of years many of our citizens have felt that our village neeiloil something simi lar in its objects anil results to the Young Men's Christian association, ami two years ago ti strong effort was put forth to establish one heri'. For various seemingly goo.1 reawms this was not done, anil last year a few energetic citizons who hail the best in terests of our young men at heart ileciileil to try the mutter in an Independent wav. Ilec. II, '811, nn organization was effected known as the "Young Men's Institute," with its vnrious committees of arrange ments nod management. The rooms and library committee decided, to accept the otter of the rooms in the basement of tlie Congregational church us thu most centrally and best locnteil that were obtainable at that time, and on Deo 1.1 they were opened to the public, and not closed ngnin on any week day evening thereafter till the first of May. A brief glance at the ligures of the records will show to the public something what was nccouiplisbed in matter of gutbeiing in the Isiys from t lie street comers and worse places during the winter. In the Kill evenings when the rooms weie open there was a total attend mice of ;i.(.V persons, averaging about ::t each evening. During the time there were 1:1 lectures or talks given by various parties upon subjects entertaining and instructive. Among tbeni were C. W. Osgood's "Kamil inr t.ilk on the City of Washington," Wallace White's "Ohalk talk on drafting, etc.," I'rof. Simpson's "Familiar talk on elcctricitj ;" tho Vel moot Academy banjo ami guitar club gave n line evening's entertainment of music, N. (1. Williams spoke on "Financeering," Dr. Kdward Kirklaud on "What should be dime in emergencies," dipt. W. II Taylor gave nn evening of " Personal experiences during the late wnr," Wullace White told "How to spend $17" profitably in a trans Atlantic trip," (icorge 1. 1-eonard sjmke on "Ins and outs of college life" from an Amherst standpoint, II. D. Hyder, Ksip, gave an in sight into " My western trip," and two evenings were spent with stereopticons from cities upon dilTerent subjects. Tlie average attendance at these entertainments was loll, and every one of them furnished a full evening's enjoyment at no expense to those for whom they were intended. The Minis were supplied with four daily papers, fourteen weekly papers and seven maga ziues, nil the most popular ones obtain able All the entertainments were con trihiited by public-spirited citizens at no cost to the institute, all the papers and magazines were contributed, and the total cash expenses of the organization for the four and a-half mouths, consisting chiefly of rent, janitor nnd printing bills, was $UM 7S, nlso contributed by interested parties. It is safe to say that this amount of money wns never expended here to more real benefit in the line for which it was in tended, that of entertaining, instructing and elevating the lioys. It proved a much more successful experiment than even the nio-'t sanguine expected at the start, and Paves the way for a much more extended enterprise the coming winter. Now the iiuestiou is agitated ns to what shall be lone for the coming winter and various projects are being discussed and taking form, none as yet sufficiently matured to spenk of, hut it is safe to say that the ad vantage trained last season, and the success attained will be followed up by still larger work this winter. 1 ho annual meeting of the institute is to he held next Wednesday evening. Dr. A. J. Parker lost a set of farm build ings on Monday night by fire. They were located between South Charleston n and ltugdon and insured in the People s coin pany of Manchester for $S00. The large three-story building being erected on Canal street, north of tho Arms block, by Mtssrs. llrown, is, approaching completion and is a fine piece of architect lire. It makes an important addition to the substantial buildiiiL's on or near the square. It would seem as if the owners had been rather avaricious in taking every inch of ground that lielongs to them, thereby making Canal street still narrower than it was before, and at some future time, if not now, it will somewhat impede tho business of tlio street. The first floor is being finish ed for two large roomy stores. Tho one next to the Anus block is to bo occupied by K. A. Eaton and his brother-in law for a hardware store, ine norm store hin ou occupied by A. F. Winnowisser as n furni ture ami crockery store. The second story of the north side will be used by D. A Newton for the undertaking liiisinew. The t.(it, il. half of the second storv is tube finish ed off for offices and lodging rooms. We understand there will bo no partitions in the third story and it will be used for a furniture salesroom by Mr. Winnowisser The building rising so high aliovo tho others on tho north side tho view from mo win ilows is one of the finest in this vicinity. Tho White Mountain excursion of the Rellows Falls club left hero on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, nnd comprised aliout forty people from this place. It was their intention to spi nil Thursday on Mt. Wash ington. From there they were to go to Isortli Conway, spending the night at tne Crawford House. Today they wore to be at the Profile House, arid expect to reach home Saturday afternoon, Chas. S. Howard, an employe of Osgood iS: Ilarker, had one foot severely injured by the falling of n large cone casting, weigh inir alHillt one and one-half tons, which ho was placing in a lathe for the purpose of finishing. Karl Smith, a bell boy at Towns Hotel while emraL'eii ill washing windows Tues day, was standing on tho ledge outside a window on the third story, and fell, strking the porch over the door and from there rolling to the ground. Physicians being called, it was found that he had broken one ankle and one wrist, and was severely bruised. He still remains at the Hotel, though his home is in Athens. Tliu olothiiiL' store of O. l. Oray it Co, loses this week one of tho most popular . clerks in this vicinity, ira a. aiiuihs, who has been in that store nearly seven years, finished his work there iuesday After visiting Ins parents for u short time in (Irafton, he will go to Willimantic, Ct , to woik in tho clothing store ot it. r Itoiiiington. Ira is deservedly popular among all our people, young and old, and one and all wish him success in his new location, lie has been an active and earnest worker in the Baptist church hero, . nnd ill every movement for the improve ment of tho morals of tho place, Prof Simpson of the High school, during the summer took an examination in Boston, which, though severe, resulted in his taking a first-grade diploma thereby making him eligible to any position in the Boston schools. It is understood that he does not intend to follow teaching, having chosen the law as his profession, Thursday tho bar keeper in the saloon of L, T. Lovell, 2nd, named Michael Murphy, was fined $20 and costs for having fur pished liipior to Charles Chamberlain. It would seoui as it tho punishment was very light for tho crime of furnishing liquor to young lioys, and in this case it seems to have resulted directly or indirectly in send ing Chamberlain to the reform school dur lug his minority. Our citizens were Boinewhat interested in some of tho matters of the county court during its closing hours this week. Among other matters was the divorce applied for liy II. C Johnson, which was granted on Wednesday, the hearing on it having occu pied pirt of Monday and Tuesday. Quite n number of citizens were summoned. Tho indictment against Saruh J. Kendall was continued, bail being reduced to $100, which was furnished by her reputed bus baud. At the close of court she was set at liberty, which was probably the last that will be heard of the case. Itev W. II. Fdrbush of Brooklyn will oc cupy the pulpit of the Congregational church next Sunday. At n special meet ing of the Congrega tional church Tuesday evening it was voted to accept the resignation of Itev. A. II. Dascoinb, who has for the past 11 years held the positiou of a supply, never having been settled" over tlie parish. A committee on resolutions to llttiugly express the feel ing of the society was appointed. It was REMEMBER THE VALLEY FAIR, BRATTLEBORO, Wednesday & Thursday, Oclohcr I niul 2. The horse ran, but was finally brought to a standstill by being thrown down after striking a fence. Henrts from Huron county, Mich , say that hail recently fell there to tha ilepth of eight inrlies ami literully uipetl auay the crop,. The ilnmat;e is estimated at $:100 IMI0, Many of the farmers are in a ilesti tute conilition. A Chicago street car was helil lip by to ilismseil men in the suburhn of the city Momluy, anil driver ami conductor relieved of all their money and their watches. Colon, on the Isthmus of Panama, was nearly ilehtroved by lire, nliout three fourths of the tow n lieiiiK burned, Momluy ni);ht. C, was shaken up by an earthquake Tuesday morning, six distinct shocks being felt. Hot Springs, Ark., was swept by a terri ble Hood nnd waterspout Monday night. The property loss was very great. I'nriilillK lnnt nud Weal A bright young farmer who went from Vermont to Nebraska some years ago made a remark as the result of his experience which is full of meat. Said he, "If farmers iu Vermont would Uveas those in Nebraska do they would all get rich." The dilTerence in the farmer's living iu the two sections is very great. In Nebras ka a wretched hut made of sods may con tain the family of a fairly prosperous farmer, and a good house there is anything that will keep half a doen people dry ami warm. There is no top buggy and no carefully built shed to keep it in. There are no knick knacks in the house, and rarely space to put them. Everything, out doors ami in the house vehicles, dress, table anil what not is measured closely by necessity and by that alone. This comes simply from the conditions found in a newly settled country. The things that conduce to pleasure anil ease merely and are not essential to exist ence cannot be hail at flrt by any possibil ity, and it is a long time before they are given much attention. Dread and butter, shelter ami warmth, must first be had; it is no liirht work to' assure these, and it takes ' many slow years to get beyond them. Relatively speaking, the eastern farmer lives iu luxury ami Hie western one in pov erty the poverty which has the essentials of life and uo more. It is this fact which oxplaius many things. The fanner in Ver mont spends hundreds or thousands of dol lars in his lifetime for things which the Nebraska farmer doeB entirely without. Some of these things the Vermont man might pjriiapsgo without and suiter no sort of injury, but he, as well as all other civil ized men, has faihion to consder. The young mail mentioned above finally return ed to Veiiuout and is now a prosperous farmer iu a "hill town" and his remark nliout the matter is that if he lived here as he did 111 Nebraska "people would think him a blamed fool " Mou like, and are in a manner compelled, to do in certain re spects as their neighliors do, If the New Kuglaud farmer envie his western brother in this or that matJrial re spect lie should still remember his own ad vantages, He has the things that an older civiluatiou brings, and in many ways gets more from his life. He could not bj in duced to live iu houses made of tods or log, and in considering his relative conditions should not fail to rate at their full aluo hit house of the better kind and all that is within and around it. ufiiml lltrald. Gov. elect Page has selected for his sec retary of civil and militarv affairs, Henry M. MeFarland of Hyde Park. Mr. Me Farland Is a lawyer by profession and was state's attorney of Lamoille county In 18S4 80, but has virtually given up his law prac tice to take nn interest with Mr. Page in various business enterprises, He is a di rector of the Lamoille county national bank, vice president of the InmoilIe county sav ings hank nnd trust company, and is secre tary uf severnl Lamoille concerns engaged in the manufacture of lumber. The selec tion is esteemed n wide one by those who know Mr. MeFarland personally. The scarcity of rubber the past year is not due to the revolution in Itrai.il cutting off tliu supply. Tho demand has lately greatly increased, nnd though new locali ties nro opened for supplying the raw gum, vet the supply does not, nor is it likely to, increase in tho same ratio. It is inevitable that this stnt-le article must ere many years become a cultivated product, and the prim itive methods of gathering rubtter from trees growing wild in forest will give way to more intelligent plans. Unless this is done India rubber must become increasing ly scarce, ns the demand for it is steadily growing.
