Taylor Writes an Interesting Letter About Her Visit Among the Southern People. Paragould, Arkansas Aug. 12 '98. Editor Expositor: Thinking some of the Yale friends would like to hear from the Sunny South, I will give a short account of my visit here. 1 reached Paragould, Ark., April 20th and found the trees in full foliage, the roses blooming, and vege tables of nearly every kind large enough to use. The corn growing in my brother's garden was three feet high. This is the land of flowers and song, the land of the magnolia and the mocking bird, where roses of richest tint bloom from February to Decem ber, and the Cactus, Cinnamon vine, Ilybiscus. Jassamine, and the lovely Passion tlower grow by the road side. Since May 10 the temperature has averaged 85 to (10 in the shade and no cases of sunstroke or prostration. Nearly every Southern family keeps a cow, and they churn the milk in a few hours after milking. As the houses are built without cellars, the butter is a little soft. I could appreciate a roll of Mrs. Menerey's or Mrs. I'.arr's butter if it could come down here in a re frigerator car. On tho ISth of July, I, in company with Mrs. W. II. Wycott, and a number of other Paragould peo ple left here for Atlanta, Georgia, to attend the Confederate Veteran's Ile union. Atlanta is a magnificent city, having fully recovered from the ravages of the war. The Georgians are true Southerners, chivalrous, cultured, im pulsively hospitable, and intensely loyal to their heroes. Our lirst visit was to the Exhibition grounds where the Heunion was being held. The ex ercises opened with prayer and singing led by General Gordon. Tho lirst bat tle Hag brought in was that of the 32nd Tennessee regiment, said to be the tinest Confederate banner now in ex istence that whs carried through a bat tle, it was unfurled to the tune of "The girl I left behind me." while "Kebel yells" nearly brought down the house. Following, came about a dozen tattered remnants of llags, soiled and battle scarred, but nevertheless dear to the heroes in Grey, and as the strains of "Dixie" were heard, every Son of the South stood up with bared head as the sacred relics of a lost cause passed in. There were speeches by Generals Gor don, Stephen J). Lee, Longstreet and others, when it was announced that Miss Winnie Davis had arrived. She came in a special car and was escorted to the platform by General Gordon, with an honorary guard on either side of the aisle. The band again crave "Dixie" and as the audience arose, "Kebel yells went up from thousands or throats m honor or the daughter of the Confederacy, and of their Chief tain whose memory they worship. It was thrilling to hear the matchless ora tory of those grizzled heroes, glorying in the righteousness of the cause they had lost and the valor of the men who sleep in the dust yet true to the Star Spangled Manner, rejoicing in a re-united country, and ready to shoulder arms again for the Nation's weal. Our next visit was to Fort McPher son where the wounded from Santiago are in camp. One of the soldiers said, the men we went to give up our lives for are the lowest class ot negroes. They steal everything they get their hands on. A lew go into battle, a verv few, and the rest follow after, go through the pockets of the dead, and hang around a lire like a pack of vul tures when there is anything to cook. He have been waging a war of human ity on their account, and it would be more gratifying had they shown them selves worth lighting lor. We then walked over to where the Spanish prisoners were. They were mostly sitting around, some of them preparing dinner. They looked very cross at us at lirst, but when we spoke to them, they dropped tneir work and all stood with polite attention. Only one could speaK any j-.ngiisn, and i asked him how many there were of them. He counted his lingers and said, "leven, non, sixteen." Just then the iruard ordered us to "move on" and he bowed to us and said Non Anglaire, Salsa, Senonta." As our knowledge of Spanish was somewhat limited, we could only guess tne interpretation. Our next move was for tho Cyclora- ma of the battle of Atlanta at Grant s park. The painting was done by a lirst class artist and cost .$f0,(XX. The representation is life size and was pre sented totnecity uy a citizen now re siding there. Here was the battle dn all its grandeur, and all its honors. Through shot and shell the battle rag ed above the fallen dead, while on swept the martial ranks to conquer, or to die. Heroes ot tne sixties in tneir suits of grey, all of whom had fought and some ot whom had bled on this verv held, explained different phases of the battle. There were two brothers beside the old school house, one wear ing the blue, the other the grey, both mortally wounded; ono is holding his canteen to the pale lips of the other while life is fast ebbing away. There was also a humorous side to the scene. JJeside the long line of Uncle Sam's ambulances and beyond the line of firing were the commissaries and butlers who were trying to induce the men to come in their direction, and a goodly number were breaking rjmks and going at a double quick gait, while their lead ers were gallantly exhorting them to keei) in line. Leaving this, we hurried back to Pryor street to view the parade. Ominous clouds began to gather, the rain came in torrents while streaks of red shot up from the horizon to the zenith. Some imaginative person said it was indicative of the blood that was shed. On Saturday morning we left Atlanta for Chattanooga, a city beautifully Io cated In a valley surrounded by mount ains and the Tennessee river. We took the train to Chicamaugua park where there aro 20,000 soldiers at Camp Thomas. Our party were cordially in vited to dino with the officers of Com pany D. 2nd Arkansas, and after dinner drove over some of the places or inter est. It will be remembered that tho battle of Chicamaugua was one of the most sanguinary conflicts of the war. we drove past "bloody pond wnere the water nad been thick with the blood of the slain after one of the bat Higer's Ou r Stock of Men's Fine Summer Tan Shoes must be moved off in order to make room for the fall stock just arriving. Ueturninrr to Chattanooga, we took the electric cars for Missionary llidge. This is about two miles east of the city and is about 500 feet above the valley. This was where (Jeneral IJragg's head quarters were, but his army was in des titute circumstances living on nan rations and with little clothing to keep thpm warm. Crant charged his men and ordered them to take the ltidge. The guns of the uontederates could not be depressed so as to make them effective. Deeds of valor there were plenty on both sides. All honor to the men who defended tho liidge as well as those who fought their way to its sum mit. The government has erected live observation towers 70 feet in height, one at Delong's place, one on Mission ary ridge, one at IJragg's headquarters during the battle of Missionary ridge, one at Hall's Ford, where Bragg form al for the battle of Chicamaugua. one near Jay's mill where the battle began, the other on snodgrass inn, wnere k closed. Large historical tablets 3 feet by 4 are erected along the boulevards giving a statement of the movements of the troops at these points.
