From Sylvan Valley News, Brevrad, North Carolina: It may be a question whether the editor of a newspaper has the right to publicly recommend any of the various proprietary medicines which flood the market, yet as a pre ventative of eull'ering we feel it a duty to say a good word tor Chamberlain's colic, cholera and diarrhoea remedy. We havo known and used this medicine in our family for twenty years and havo always found it reliable. In ma ny cases a dose of this remedy would eayo hours of suil'ering while a physi cian is awaited. We do not believe in depending implicitly on any medicine for a cure, but we do belieyo that if a bottle of Chamberlain's diarrhoea rem edy were kept on hand and adminis tered at tho inception or an attacK much suil'ering might be avoided and in verv many cases the presence ot a physician would not be required. The Champion binder wins in a pub lic contest at the farm of Jonathan Lyons, one mile east of Vale, Mich., on Saturday, July 14, 1900. The Osborne Company through their agent Wesley Schlichter, issued a chal lenge for a binder test in cutting wheat on the aforesaid mentioned farm. The Osborne Company was represented by It. II. Menerey, local agent at Yalo, Wesley Schlichter, traveling salesman and Wm. Phillips, block man, and other experts. The Osborne led off in tho test. John Lyons driving his team hitched to the Osborne around the field live times and not one time in the live did he get around the field without being obliged to stop in order to give the expert a chance to adjust some part of the ma chine. It missed tying bundles and the grain came out from behind, the open elevator being a failure in this kind of grain. Then Mr. Lyons hitch ed his team on the Champion driving it around the field three times without stopping. Then ho gave his decision in favor of the Champion binder. That the Osborne had been outdone in every point was the verdict of all the farmers present, and of everybody who saw the test. We wish to say that Jonathan Lyons was fair and honest in his judg ment, having made the statement be fore starting that he would rather buy a binder of Mr. Schlichter than any other person, as they were old school mates, and he would not listen to cut prices from either parties. It was not the man or the price; it was the best binder he wanted. Also we hope Mr. Schlichter realizes that there has been a binder test this time. And it is far different to bo present at one than to hold one over the telephone, as he did last year. Wharton & Co., of Yale will be pleased to meet the Osborne binder at any time in contest on any farm in the vicinity of Yale. The Champion. General News. IJerney, and ho leaves a wife and five children in des titute circumstances. The paper is be ing taken care of by local parties who have money in it. m a Oliver Wendell Holmes said that tho 'Truest and surest way of reforming a man is to begin with his grand-mother." We endorse the saying as sound doc trine, for nothing is surer to tell than blood, and no inheritance so certain as ancestral traits and tendencies. Uut the doctrine ia not deep enough don't reach far enough back. In some eaees we would put the notch at least ten generatins rearward, and in a few cases the only absolutely certain re form would be to have no grand-mothers at all. A Lakeside Letter. Callander, Ontario; On LakeNipissing, July 14th, 1WU. Editor Expositor: Jlefore leaving Michigan, I spent a couple of hours examining- the stone crusher working and the stone road being built in the vicinity of the Tunnel Junction. Of course I was interested in this bus iness, because of tho fact that our town has an investment of 8800, that so far only serves as a curiosity, and is left to rot on Francis hill. If our crusher does its work, as well as this one at l'ort Huron, it ought to be set grinding at once, and give it a fair trial, if no good send it to the junk store. The Port Huron crusher does its work well. Three men with help ers to load are kept busy with wheel barrows filling the hopper, one man shoving the boulders into and between the crushers, where they are quickly reduced into three sizes, being carried by endless buckets into the cylinder, from whence they come out at the side onto Haps, and from thence let down into the wagons underneath. The road itself, so far .is completed, looks as if it would last for ages. Making in quiry, found that there was first a layer of sand 2 or 3 inches thick. Then same thickness broken stone, over which a heavy steam roller is driven, and the stone pressed down into the sand until quite solid. Then another 3-inch layer of stone, treated in the same way with the roller, then a top coat of the fine stono and stone dust, also about 3 inches thick, rolled down until it becomes as hard as rock, the heayiest wagons loaded to their utmost not making the slightest impression on it. A little enterprise, a little sand in the crop, mixed with a fnir modicum of brains, and our idle macaine put to work, our old town may 1 1 be redeem ed from the justly earned odium of owning the worst roads in Lho country. Passing along through anada from Sarnia to Toronto, noticed that Can adian farmers, at least along tho line have not very much to boast of in the way of crops, poor to middling would be about right describing them, good being an exception, especially the oat and hay crops. Some fields of hay were cut and ricked up, Tommy Clyne's summer hat would cover any of them. I don't mean any rellection on Tommy s hat, but on the smallness of hay ricks, Mrs. Urown and Carl join ed me at Gravenhunt, and wo came on here to Callander, arriving Wednesday night. This is a small village of COO inhabitants, owing its existence and its present life to numerous saw mills. The same may be said of many of the little towns along the line of the Grand Trunk north of Toronto, especially in the neighborhood of lakes of which there are many. This town is situated on the south east corner of Lake Nipissing. The lake itself, outside of money making, is the only attraction for tourists. It is an indian name meaning "big water" and is a very beautiful sheet of water, many islands dotting its surface. Some of them very beautiful places, covered down to tho waters edge with the greenest of green trees and foliage, making delightful resorts for those seeking pleasure and recuperation. I am almost afraid to mention fish, be cause fish stories don't go down with the ayerage land lubber without salt shrinkage, but I am told in good au thority that pike has been caught weighing 42 pounds. I caught one myself last night that came within 40 po'unds of it, but to be real honest about it, I caught it after some one else caught it and brought it to shore and made me a present of it. I was agreeably surprised and pleas ed to find still here a Itev. He i3 a very agreeable gentleman and has promised to show me somo of the good fishing holes next week, and if I catch one of those 42 pounders, I will express it to the Expositor force for Sunday dinner, T'iiis is a very rough country, the farms being rough and rocky, tillable land just patches here and there be tween the rocks, each patch from one half an acre or less to several acres in extent. I have been told .that back from Cie railroad are many good farms and prosperous f armers, but they are not in sight passiuj v,;:9uffh hY r.ai1 WThatsoil there is, is goocl iHd nchf and raises pretty good crops usually. Times are said to be good up here, everybody seeming to be contented and prosperous. Tho mills running night and day. Lumber being higher than usual, and in great demand.
