4 4 1 VOL 23. NO. 30. w* OLDEN TIME Twenty-one Years ago this Week in Aberdeen and Brown County. Prom tho ilex of lht ltCDublican. This clipping from the Columbia Sentinel appears "Wm. M. and Adelbert Fessendeu, who live about four miles north-west of Columbia caught an antelope in a bear trap a few days ago. They have the antel ope alive and well and it is as tame as a calf. It eats hay jvith the rest of the stock, and seems entirely sat isfied and domesticated. They have set the trap again. "The James River Navigation Co mpany", says the Columbia Sentinel "has ordered a passenger boat with a capacity for carrying forty passen gers runs seventeen miles a minute— or an hour we forget which—and .only draws eighteen inches of water" If that boat didn't "draw" so much it might run over a heavy Dakota dew, The "Navigation Company will also run a steam tug to tow wheat barges up and down the river(?) thus securing cheap transportation. There appeared the full text of the bill provkiing for the division of Brown into four countys. Two ranges 66 and 67, were to be taken from Ed munds and Mo. Plierson counties, and range 59 was to be added on the east side. Brown was to be divided into four equal parts. The two counties on the west were to have twenty townships each and the east count ies sixteen each. The county of which Groton was to be the County seat was named Edgerton that with Fredericksn it was to be Inman coun ty that with Columbia in it was to retain the name of Brown and the south-west one, created for Aber deen's benefit, to be called Mc Cauley. The question was submited to voters of the proposed counties on the first Tuesday nf toay following. Elias McCauley of Spink represented this district in the tentorial council and introduced the bill to create the new counties. In the bill the south west couuty was called Richmond but on passage was amended by substit uting McCauley for Richmond. A. A. Rowley, at that time an attorney of Aberdeen, read some verses at a meeting which indicated that the success of the bill was a foregone con clusion. It reads as follows:— Ta Ta dear Columbia thou artgone like a dream, With thy wounderous mill dam and navigable stream. We tried very hare. oxir ambition to curb, For we bated to part with so fine a suberb. But we said -'Ket there Ell" let naught Intervene. And Eli got there to oblige Aberdeen, Looking ever the issue following the election a report of the vote is found to be as follows: Against Division Precikcts For Divisio I Columbia. 384 Groton 305 78 Bath 9 136 Or way 407 Aberdeen 407 58 Rondell 2 83 Warner 3 132 W estport 3 90 150 Frederick 366 11 Sand Lake 3 55 N. He is working to hare the weakest man in the whole bunch put on the opposition ticket, and at the same time keep solid with his ambitious townsman. When the public come to see the court room of the new court house there will be much astonishment at its beauty. But among the lavish decorations is a mural painting on the inner wall which will certainly be the subject of much misconstruction. It is sym bolical of an appeal -or justice. Justice is represented as an angel with wide spread wings held in a manner to best display her ample plumage. The plaintiff is a female who sits dejectedly at the feet of Justice. Her attorney is evidently in the heat of his argument. The defendant does not appear in person or by attorney, so that it is unquestionably a default oase. There are no spectators, indicating that it may be a case in chambers. Justice stands with drawn sword ready to sever the knot, indicating a complacent court.
