well dressed In black broadcloth , a la
United States , with the exception of n heavy
scart of poduasoy , wh'ch fell Jauntily over
his broad shoulders , entered by n side door.
He save a few sententious orders in Mexi
can nnd ns the hustle on .all hands took on
redoubled vigor , we Inferred that he was
the "main squeeze" of the house and that
piny would soon begin. We were right In
both surmises. In a moment or two wo saw
the porters emerge from a vault-like adobe
on the south of the main room and dnmn
from their shoulders huge sacks filled with
something that Jingled like coin when they
struck the surface of the table. There were
two of these porters nnd they innde three
trips each to the vault. Untying these
sacks the proprietor emptied their
contents upon the table. They
were Mexican silver dollars and amounted In
all to $30,000 , This was the bank's roll' and
a player was privileged to "tap" the ha'nk on

any turn of the cards. In fuct , you could
bet anything , from a 5-cent silver piece up to
$30,000. According to Mexican gambling
ethics the bank's roll must remain con
stantly in sight of the players , and , In the
event a "winout" is made , the banker must
discontinue play , at least for that day.
He can inoither "dig" or "go fetch ; " It Is

In other words , the Mexican inodo is on ex
actly the same plan as our table [ italics In
poker.
While wo watched the varying fortunes of
the players nt Dionisio's bank for upward of
nn hour , we did not see any attempts at
tapping his roll , A United States marshal
from Oklahoma was bucking the game " $100
out of hand , " which was the hlgheut play wo
saw. The Mexicans Invariably limited thsm-
velvca to $20 gold places , and this was rare ,
the majority of bets ranging from $1 to $5.
In explanation I will add that Mexican
monte Is played with a deck of card * simi
lar to those la vogue hero. The only differ
ence Is in the characters on the face oi the
cards , those used lu monte being Imported
from Spain , are pictured In devices and num
bers native to that land. The game Is much
like faro , and Just as caolly caught on , The
dealer In monte holds the deck In his left
hand and "pulls" the cards or deals with his
right , laying thorn on the table In front of
him. He1 Bits In front of the table among
the players , where nil have an unobstructed
view of his movements. Ills attendants , the
croupiers , stand behind the table , and while
one rakey In or pays off the play , the other
Is kept busy stacking the coin on the tablo.
