ASHLAND , Neb. , July 8 , ( Special. ) A colored man , Johnny McEdoo , who was one of a quartet of boyH who played at Oker park last Thursday night , seems to have got ten himself Into trouble. When the quartet was on the way to tale the train In Omaha for Ashland It stopped In a pawn shop to pawn n watch and when the broker's hack was turned Johnny froze to $90 worth of diamonds mends close by. When ho got to ANhland lie wrote a letter directed to himself In care of a saloon keeper , enclosing the diamonds and mailed the letter on the train. When the party returned to Omaha ho was arrested and plurcd In Jail. When the saloon keeper found that Johnny was In Jail he sent the let ter to him and when he opened It found the diamonds all right. Detective Cox of Omaha canio to Ashland last evening and found Johnny's name on tlio Commercial hotel reg ister. A woman giving her name as Mrs. Jennie Colemnn , accompanied by her husband , was a caller on Land Commissioner Russell today for the express purpose of getting her 8- year-old daughter out of the Geneva Indus trial School for Girls. According to her story the girl , whose name she gave as Pearl .Mary Islunael , had been forcibly taken from her and without trial or examination sent to the Geneva home. Land Commissioner Russell says he cannot understand how the county Judge of Cherry county , from where the girl was taken on May JO. 1S9C , could have sent her to Geneva without due process oC law. Mrs. Coleman was told that If her story was all right she would he given her daughter , and went away considerably relieved. John Ctirrle this afternoon reached a com promise with the state in regard to the block of maible presented to Nebraska by Tennessee. .He has turned the bill of lading over to the state and agrees to rest his claim to do the work on the statue of Abraham Lincoln on the findings of the committee appointed by Governor Ilolcomb. If they find him competent to go ahead with it , well and good. If not , he Is willing to relinquish all claim to the marble. He estimates that It will require eighteen months' time to complete the work. It is thought that ho will be given a portion of this work. Governor Ilolcomb left today for I3roken Bow , where he will attend the Custer county convention , which meets tomorrow. From there he will go to Ord , from thence to St. Paul , Howard county ; from thence to Au rora , nnd from there home , reaching Lin coln Sunday. At the request of the Omaha Commercial club the hearing of the railway cases , In which discrimination Is charged against Lin coln by the Klkhorn and Union Pacific rail ways , before the State Hoard of Transportation has been postponed until August 11 , 1SOC. The request of the Omaha Commercial club supplements a similar one made by the railways. An application was made today to the governor's office for a requisition for Gns- tavus Ackerman , who was charged with re moving mortgaged property from South Omaha , the complaint being made by Sam uel P. Hrlgham. The application for the requisition was refused , on the ground of Irregularity In the drawing of the papers. Ackerman is supposed to be in the vicinity of Kansas City , -Mo.
