OMAHA. Jan. 28. 1911
The trmle In wheat was greatly sur
prised when the visible supply figures
to posted yesterday, as a decrease of
l.NXi.OOO bushels was shown for the last
week, where mi Increase was looked for.
It Is expected by some of the cash men
that this fact may possibly drive foreign
buyers Into the trade for limited supplies.
Word was received from New YorH that
exporters purchased a few loads of wheat
for shipment via the gulf, as well as a
few loads of Manitoba wheat. Winnipeg
reported the cash trade there as belnK
slow, save for No. 2 northern wheat, and
Kansas City advices were to the effect
that the country offerings of wheat wore
much larger and the general situation
against tho price. Only 00.000 bushels
wero sold In Chicago yesterday and these
were In scattered lots to Interior millers,
but there wero stronger nibbles than In
several weeks. Canada will have a great
deal of wheat to sell next spring, as every
terminal house In the wheat growing
section of that country Is reported as
blockaded with grain, and vessels at Fort
Williams and Port Arthur hold only 6,000,
OuO bushels. With Increased offerings of
wheat by tho Argentine Republic, and
with Australian grain coming forward
inoro freely, conditions point to the fact
that holders of this grain In the United
States must either meet the asking prices
of competing countries or be obliged to
carry their own grain. For traders be
lieve that tho United States Is now on a
workable basis for 'our better grades of
wheat, an Improved business may be
looked for. Press cables reported that
-the powers would force Turkey and the
opposing fictions of the Halkans to keep
within certain limits and to finish the
war under rigid conditions. From this It
may be Inferred that the Bosphorus and
other channels will be kept open to grain
vessels. Cash wheat c lower.
While 400,000 bushols of corn were said
to havu .been sold for export yesterday,
there were claims In certain circles that
at least part of this business was old
transactions Instead of now. This opin
ion was backed up by exporters at the
seaboard asking for cancellations of old
sales. Our own market here In Omaha la
full of corn and the demand Is small.
Cash corn was Hp lower.
Oats displayed the same weakness as
of tate, and the early strength evidenced
was with tho lato rally In corn. Cash
oats was 'tc lower.

Prices on llimr.I of Trade.
CHICAGO, Jan. 28. Wheat and oats
were Btcady today, while corn and pro
visions declined. Trade waa generally
dull. Resales of wheat In France, re
flected In the quotations from Parts and
Liverpool, brought about selling In thl
market early. There was not a great ileal
of It, but at that It waa overdone and
later tbo early loss was more than re
covered. Winnipeg reported that only 1 per cent
of the crop remains In farmers' hands.
Seaboard clearances, 456,000 bushels; pri
mary receipts 896,000 bushols, against 492,
000 bushels last year.
Corn fluctuated nervously between nar
row limits, but the main Influence In a
net decline of S4c for May was tho
unloading of a local long lino, of which
process shorts took advantage
Oats were sold on a small scale by pit
traders, while demand came from com
mission houses. When shorts discovered
tho nature of tho support they covered.
Provisions started higher on tho com
mission house demand; but thero wns
plenty for sale on tho bulge and the close
was at a pet decline of 5c. Packers wero
said to be selling short.

NEW YORK, Jan. a -Wall street took
a more cheerful view of conditions today.
Prices of most of the leading stocks were
marked up 1 to 2 points, with larger
gains In special Instances. Considerable
mom business was done In the first hour
ttuui during the entire session yestrday
wid though the puce slackened later the
higher level of price was well main
tained. American can Issues scored the
njst conspicuous advances of the. day.
Bullish Impulses from several quarters
helped shapo sentiment along more hope
ful lines. Tho railroad list was strength
ened by excellent reports for December
of several large wentern systems. Includ
ing I nlon Pacific. Northern Pacific and
Northwestern. Formation of the Interna
tional Harvester corporation was con
strued as placing the Harvester Interests
In r more favorable position, notwith
standing the statement from Washington
that this action would not alter the
aspect of the government's proceedings.
Renewed activity of large speculative In
tereats In shape of bullish manipulation
of special stocks helped to stimulate the
market. Most potent of all direct In
fluences was the moderate tone of Gov
ernor Suiter's message to tho legislature,
dealing with stock exchonge legislation.
How largely today's movement was
f M. . of thto Influences rather than
or technical market conditions was a
matter of conjecture. Some traders took
;i.l.iVilI,w ""Jl the short Interest was
unwlcldly nnd that the advance was due
Primarily to this condition. It was n
sgnlflcant feature that when the list
snowed a tendency to recede once or

firmly held.
Bonds were firm with some material
gains among convertible issues. Total

CATTLE There was another very fair
run of cattle today, 208 cars being re
ported In. This makes the total for th
two days this week 10.624 head, a falling
off of about 1,000 head as compared with
last week and the smallest of any smllar
period since five weeks ago, when the
run was very small Just previous to a
holiday. It would look as If the country
wu cutting shipments down a little on
account of the weakness developed In Hie
market of late. If tho country will follow
the same policy toward otner marset
points, especially toward Chicago, where
tho market has been very unsatisfactory,
It mtgnt result In the trade taking on a
more, healthv condition.
Ueef steers were very slow and dull all
tne morning, and as was the case yester

prices were exceedingly uneven. For that

opinions of different buyers and sellers,

It might best be described as alow and
not very much different from yesterday.
The tendency, however, Is nnmlstakubiy

linns Yesterday's weak and lower ten
dency 111 hogs was completely wiped out
this morning, as the bulk of today's re
ceipts sold readily at tin adva.ice of 6trloc.
The range of prices for the majority of
the offerings was minimi $7 2Jif. .v. witn
$7 3017 being paid most frtqurntu
Several loads of prime hogx brought ns
much as $7.40, which Is a nickel alxivr the
highest point reached yesterday. Com
pared with the close of last week pre
vailing prices for hogs ale about a shade
higher, tho bulk then being around ?.25(i
7. .16, with only one toad selling as high ns
$7 40. The strength in today's trade wns
quite apparent first thing In the mnrnliu.
as both speculators and shippers opened
the market on 11 bonis fully strong to a
big nickel higher, arid" the packers' very
first bids were fully steady In comparison
with yesterday's trade Sellers were un
willing to take steady prices, so after a
comparatively shott time the packers
raised Ihelr hands and a free movement
followed nt the advance noted above, a
fair clearance taking place at an early
hour In the forenoon.
The receipts amounted to about 241 cats,
or IS, head, being slightly larger tnnn
last Tuesday and considerably larger
than tun weeks ago and one year ago.
